My beautiful little cocker spaniel went to the Rainbow Bridge yesterday.
My mom got this small blond puppy when I lived with her for a year after college. There were two left in the litter, and we picked "The Quiet One." Ha ha, was she sneaky! She wasn't quiet once we got her home. The breeder called her "Forever Amber" after a book, and we liked the name. She was a sweet, smart little dog whose favorite toy her entire life was a red rubber ball that had belonged to our last cocker, Shelly. She would always have to bring the ball to you when you talked to her - they traveled as a team.
I moved out after a year (and in with my now-husband & dachshund puppy of the same age, Tristan), but Amber was always my other little one. She had some challenges in her life - a torn posterior cruciate ligament and arthritis, severe allergies, chronic ear infections that eventually resulted in both ear canals being surgically closed (so she could no longer hear), and finally kidney failure. As all dogs do, she said, "Whatever!" and enjoyed her life anyway. She was a constant joy to my mother. :angel1:
I last saw her in September (we now live in different states) and spent some time talking with her, since I wasn't sure if I would see her again... I looked into her lovely brown eyes and told her how much I loved her. My mom worked hard with diet and meds and home fluids the last several months to give her more time, but it just became too much... and she was helped to the Bridge yesterday with my mom holding her. She was 12 years old.
Run free, little one... and keep an eye on us down here - we miss you, but know we'll see you again.
