I live in MA as does my elderly aunt Gwen. Unfortunately, Gwen has entered a nursing home/assisted living facility and was not able to take her elderly dog, Gretchen, with her. Gretchen is a 13 year old dachshund. She is red, standard size with short hair. My family and I realize that the chances of a rescue being able to take her are very slim. We are facing the prospects of having to put her to sleep, but want to make sure that we have exhausted all of our options first. Poor Gretchen is a very sweet little dog and we want to do what is right for her.
Gretchen has cushings disease, but is up to date on all shots and heartworm preventative. She is wonderful with other dogs, but overly interested in cats. My uncle tried to take her, but she was unable to endure the long hours alone (he works full time) and was not interacting well with his cats. I am unable to take her as I do cat rescue, have 2 large dogs (one of which is a greyhound that is terrified of Gretchen), and work full time.
Gretchen is currently at my grandmother's house. This situation is not ideal, as my grandmother has dementia and is primarily taken care of by home health aids. As part of her illness, my grandmother is obsessive about house chores. This includes feeding Gretchen. As a result, Gretchen is eating all the time and we feel that her situation is critical.
There is money available to help Gretchen. In an ideal world, we'd like to find someone interested in taking Gretchen on as a permanent foster (funded by us) and maybe even occasionally visiting my aunt. Again, I understand that this is not a small request, but I feel that we owe it to the dog to at least try.
I have contacted local rescue, but have not yet heard back. We are also posting flyers at the local vet's offices. If you happen to have any ideas, please contact me at the email above.
Thanks.
