We have a Great Dane who lives behind us, a mutt next door and a rat terrier on the other side so lots to bark at........Lili is the worst of the lot when it comes to yapping. I have tried everything....even the squirt of water in the face. She just stands still and closes her eyes when she sees me with the bottle, she shakes off and continues to bark, another several squirts, the L@@K and so on and so on as long as I will do it. She then shakes off and heads in the house like nothing has happened. Treats work IF she KNOWS there is something like cheese or meat for a treat other than that, forget it. Praise does not work. She is not very food motivated. We do have a fenced in yard and so do the other neighbors so fortunately Lili can't be taken for an appetizer by the Great Dane. Any suggestions? Hmmmm - she sounds just like Mitzi. I've found that when she is barking (like at the neighbors) that it helps to tell her no bark and tap her on the nose. As soon as she stops it's good Mitzi no bark. It has helped a lot. Of course Mitzi isn't in a fence in yard (yet) she is on a rope chain so this enables me to catch her while she is in the process of barking. Other wise I don't think I'd be able to because boy howdy can she run fast.

I told the dog trainer that Mitzi wasn't food motivated and she replied that if a dog isn't food motived they are probably being feed to much. Which I know Mitzi is cause she is a little chunky already - not to worry she is being watched and the cause is she not only likes her food but also Em's.

These tough, fiesty, little dachsies! I know this is a difficult problem. I find Otis will respond better indoors. I tell him NO BARK when he's looking out the window, and he reduces to a low growl and I say Good Boy No Bark! and really praise him. BUT when he is outside it is a tougher problem. This is his place to be FREEEE! It is hard here too, as there are a lot of dogs in the neighborhood. He just gets so out of control. I try to say NO BARK and SHAME ON YOU and he doesn't listen. He saw his first rabbit the other night and it took me forever to calm him down!!! I'm sure the neighbors appreciated that. The only thing I can offer is to be consistently stern. When I say NO BARK I hold his mouth gently, so he gets the hint. Aren't they fun?

Otis's mommy,

Anita

P.S. Otis says: surely you must be exaggerating, his sweet, gentle, little innocent Lili would never be capable of causing any trouble whatsoever!
