View Full Version : Is your Dachsie's fur soft or coarse?

I went to Petsmart earlier and there were 3 smooth Dachshunds and 2 of the 3 had very coarse fur, I didn't realize they could feel like that since Tia's practically feels like velvet. What do yours feel like?

Pokey's Mom

When we first adopted Pokey his coat was very stiff. He has a reverse pattern on his neck, and he literally had a little mohawk. Before us he was fed Alpo *shudder* and left outside by himself alot *cringe*. :(

His coat soon turned velvety and soft within a few weeks. His mohawk flattened out to a wide 2 inch feathering. Just a better diet, 3V caps and less time in the elements did the trick. Oh, plus a whole lotta love and kisses!!!

I have one of each. Low-la's hair is thick and longish. Mitch's is fine and short. They are both shiny, but Mitch feels like silk and looks like satin when he moves. He has always been like this, even when he was eating Beneful at his former home. I thought he'd lose his puppy coat and his hair would come in more coarse. He is so pretty we let all the brat stuff slide:)

Schatz has the softest coat I have ever felt on a dog. My husband said we should have named him "Black Velvet".

Smooths are supposed to have a coarse coat. A well bred smooths coat will lay flat and be shiny- not soft. Think about what they're bred to do- dig and root! A coarse coat protects them from branches and thorny bushes- and helps keep the dirt out. :)

Lynx has a soft head and neck, but has very coarse fur on his body. It lays very flat and is super shiny- nice to pet. But you wouldn't want to rub him the wrong way- it wouldn't feel good to you or him.

Somewhere there was a thread on this- I think Cindi actually brought up those points. I don't think I'd ever thought about it before.

And of course, Dutch is silky- Geisha is fluffy. But I'm pretty sure you're just asking about smooths. ;)

Missy smooth but soft like longhair
Zeke wire but soft wire
Annie smooth and somewhat coarse
Sammy long and soft

Bunny's hair is coarse, except for the dappled spots on her heiny. Juney and Trixie's hair is very soft, with Trixie's long hair being silky.

Heidi's Pam

Heidi has a very coarse coat for a smooth - the hairs almost seem to have a kink in them. However, there are sections that are considerably smoother - her ears, chest and top of her head, but her back is the coarsest. I met another black & tan smooth at one of our dachsie meetups who was sooo different from Heidi, both in coat and dimensions. He had a silky smooth coat - I never knew that smooths could be that soft, and his ears, tail and whole body seemed so much longer in proportion to Heidi's.

Smooths with harsher coats most likely have some wire Dachsies in their background. I've seen some smooths out of wire breedings who have very harsh coats but are missing the wire furnishings (beard and eyebrows)

Actually I never really thought about it until Chrissie's post, but Pogo is supersoft....but Pixel never really had the same level of silkiness that Pogo does even though they eat the exact same food and get the exact same suppliments. Not like Pixel's is rough, just not nearly the same (I wouldn't describe it as very course, just maybe course).....but Pixel does come for a quality breeder and Pogo is a petstore pooch.

I said in between. Pippit's fur on his sides is soft and a lighter color then then the fur on his back and tail. This is where he has a lot of the black overlay. He also has some(for lack of a better word)blonde hairs between his sholders and on his tail. Not sure what that is....but those are the coarses hairs of all.

Oliver's fur is like soft velvet. Tammy's is soft more silky but she does have some coarse spots around the muzzle and under the belly. I think there's wire in her background.

I said in between because I thought she had coarse hair until I had a neighbor pet her and commented how soft her coat was. I wasn't sure really becasue I would have said coarse becasue our last dog was a sheltie with silky soft hair. I guess it's in the eye of the beholder. Ally is really soft on her head and hiney and more coarse on her "longest" part and belly!

Olana is soft ... and silky.

We even gave her a dab of olive oil in her kibble to see if that would keep it silky. It's hard to say if it really did anything. We just tried it once over the weekend.

but then realized you might have been referring more to smooths in comparison to Tia...

My LH girls are very soft although Angel's hair near her backside is a little rougher. Cassie is 100% soft and fluffy. She had a bath the other day and is even fluffier than usual. Her daddy has started calling her "Dustmop."

Clay is super soft, and Rocky is coarse...I think it was his diet though (his foster mom said his former own feed him dollar store food :( ) We've changed his diet and he gets some fish pills now too(vet's idea). I must say he is even smelling better now too, he got her with a bad odor. Both are smooth red's

As much as our two get rubbed, it's a wonder they have any soft, shiny, silky fur at all. I tell you, you know how some people can't get enough of a baby's soft skin? That never did anything for me. But give me a puppy, or one of my dachsies, and look out. Trenyce groans, and Ruben just moves away from me on the couch sometimes because I "mess with him" so much. I LOVE their soft fur! Trenyce now sleeps beside me under my covers and I sleep with an arm around her belly.
SOFT! SOFT! :hugs1: SOFT!

Taffy is soft....and so nice and shiny. Dh says she looks like a little otter. I have noticed that the hair on her tummy is a little more course. I don't have papers on her, so I don't know how "well bred" she is, but she is a total delight to pet and cuddle.:hug2:

Bella's coat is very soft. Her cousin Oscar, also a smooth coat red has coarse hair. I've often wondered why the difference myself.

Sidney the larger boy weighs in at 28 lbs, his breeder shows them and has won some events, Sidney was born from parents who were wirehairs,, but he had a gene pool hiccup he has straight hair but a boar coat color,.. short straight hair silky smooth hair on head, chest, tummy -front and back legs, but from shoulders down to his butt where his spine is his hair is coarse 2 inches wide from shoulders to butt, coase but straigh and short,..if you dont pet it youd never know it was that way.... looks awesome since its a boar color browns and blacks mixed in,,,,

I've got a coarse smooth coat. I'm sure at one point he had that soft puppy coat, but we adopted him as an adult and he's had his coarse coat for aslong as I can remember

Chili's coat (longhair choc/tan) is silky smooth. People are constantly commenting on how soft and lusterous his coat is. Jimmy (smooth coat) is soft, but in a different way than Chili's.

I have one of each. But with Con and his doxie baldness syndrome there isn't a whole lot of hair left in places. He no longer has hair on the top of his tail. :sorry:  each year it gets worse. BTW he will be 8 years old on Labor Day!
