I just finished looking at the available Dachsie at the DRNA adoption page. I was SHOCKED at how many dachsies there are that need forever homes. If I wasn't at my 2 dog limit that my condo assn enforces, I'd consider another one right now. Some of these stories are sooooo sad. Like the one of the poor little dachsie girl who was found on the side of a road. Apparently she had been dumped by her family because she was parilyzed in her back legs and they didn't want to deal with it. FORTUNATELY, this little sweetheart has a new family. There are so many who haven't though. If anyone is considering adding a new set of 4 feet to their household, PLEASE consider rescue. There is soooo much need here and think how much LOVE you will get back from one you've saved! I usually don't go on like this, but again, I was really shocked at the sheer number of homeless dachshunds on just THIS site. drwp.net/needhome.html Don't know how to link it, but here's the url.

I'd like to second your comments! Unfortunately, if the dog I think you were talking about is from Texas, Scooter only has a foster home at this point, she needs a real forever home. Her foster mom has a house full of dachsies and would like to find someone who could work with her full time. If someone would like to help her, please contact Joanna Richardson at JoannaR@airmail.net
Maybe I can get Joanna to put some other information here.

You know what Sandi.....the whole thing makes me so angry that humans are so cruel. I just can't believe that someone would stoop so low as to drop a paralyzed, helpless dachsie off on the road because THEY can't deal with it.
Of course, yesterday when I was in PetSmart the Ohio Angels for Animals had their cat adoption day. I was just looking in the cages and there was the most beautiful gray male kitty (looked like a Russian Blue) who was, get this, abandoned at the groomers. Meaning someone dropped the kitty off at the groomers and never came back. How disguisting......it also said on his tag "Extremely friendly and affectionate, gets along well with other pets".....well you can guess what I was thinking......and you can guess what Mark said too....I believe his words were "Are you trying to make our house a zoo???" http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/uh-oh.gif

Yeah for Scooter that is wonderful. I had seen her story a few weeks ago and been hoping she would find a home.
I got hooked on looking at the dachsies on the rescue sites when I was looking for Betty and I still like to see the doggies that need homes. I always say an extra prayer for the handicaped dachsies (or as my husband says my blind dachsie prefers to be refered to - handicapable) and the really senior dachsies that they will find extra good homes.

Me too, Jennifer... I am always rooting for the old dogs. I've been hoping and hoping that someone would adopt Sam. I would take him in a second, but he can't be with other males.
Do we still have our Win-the-Lotto plan that someone came up with a few months back? One of us wins the Lottery and we set up a permanent home for the old dogs. What a great dream! <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm38.gif" border=0>

Have you ever read "The Webmasters Dream" on the drwp.net site? It talks of creating a Dachsie Dude Ranch that dogs that don't find permenent homes can live out their lives. It is great and talks of something very similar. I cry everytime I read it.

I am always saddened to think that anyone or any family could look on a pet as less than a lifetime committment! I now have a third dachsie with back trouble ( the first was so severe in 1980 eauthanasia was the only merciful solution, and the second has a calcium deposit between 12th and 13th vertebrae),and little Gretl came in one Saturday morning dragging her back legs, so I freaked, called the vet, got her in for deep pain checks, x-rays, and 3 hours later, she was in a van en route to All Care Pet Facility for emergency surgery 21 hours later. Acupuncture, hydrotherapy, antibiotics and pain killers = $3850 later, but that was in 9/99, and she may not walk perfectly, but she CAN walk, runs like she used to, and is feeling no pain. I would do it again if I had to - my dogs are my children!! JB in CA, mom to Heidi, Gretl, and Siglen
