I am going to get a dachshund in the next 2 months and was wondering if there are any temperament differences between mini's or standards. Is one more playfull than the other or are they both the same??? Also, I have 2 female cats and a female dog. Would a female or male dachshund be better suited for my house? Please help! Thanx-J

I have a 3 month old (almost) mini male named TaterTot. Tater is full of energy! He just goes and goes and goes and goes. The Energizer Bunny had nothing on him!!! But I wanted a dog that could keep up with my kids! However, my sister has a 5 month old mini female named Shase'. She is very mellow and lays around "napping" all day...as does my sister (she's on summer break).
I think that some of it has to do with the breeding, environment, and individual behavior of each individual dog! Pay a lot of attention to "who" your pup is in the pack, as that usually is a good indicator of temperment.
As for male vs. female thing....we do not have girl dogs in this house. Not that we are against girls....I just think that girls are a lot more needy than boy dogs. The few that we have fostered were constantly needing to know where you were and what you were doing. (They were worse than my mother when I was a teenager). Don't get me wrong, I have a girl cat and 2 girl horses, so we are not totally against girls here, just want the dogs to be boys.
Good luck with your search! Let us all know when you get your new furbaby!

In my experience, standards are definitely more mellow than minis. It makes sense that the more they are "breeded down" the more active, (nervous? I can't find the word) they will be. As far as male vs. female, I have only had males. (I've ALWAYS been outnumbered in this household!) Good luck on your search.

We've got one female, and she is the complete princess/ruler of the roost. She's a daddy's girl, and she does not hesitate to the "the boys" (all three of them) know that she is in charge. all this from less than 8 lbs of wiener dog.
I absolutely adore Miss Gidget, but I think the boys are easier. Gidget also makes it clear that she's not a happy camper if we foster females, though she seems to do fine with the males.
None of my males seem to care WHAT I bring home in the way of fosters--big, small, old male, female, long hair, shorthair....they are always just happy to play...
