It thought only cats liked this sort of thing, and found out about it was sort of an accident.
I was using our Laser level to hang a curtain rod, and I just set it down for a minute to hang the rod up. (Left the laser on, and it was pointed in Julius' direction.) Turn out he really loves chasing it! His favortie toys have always been rubber squeaky balls, and when he's on a more mellowed out mood, he likes to destroy soft squeaky plush toys.
But the laser? He could play with this for hours. I just wiggle it around the house and he runs like the wind trying to catch the red laser :devil1: It's hilarious to watch, he just gets so tired chasing after awhile. :fierce: I got Romie interested in it too, only her puppy short attention span caused her to get bored of it in about 2 minutes. :) Has anyone tried this? I think a ball or CHASE driven dach would love it.

a laser light but have heard that some doxies become obsessed by it. I was at a local dachsie meetup and one of the dogs was absolutely entranced by the sun glinting reflections on the ground off of his collar tag - just wouldn't leave it alone. It was cute to watch, but I could see where it might become a little much at times.

Oh Yes! Casey loves to chase the red dot! I first bought it for my cat (she is rather lazy) when Casey saw it his eyes lit up! After playing for a half hour my thumb gets sore. I have to hide it and then he sits and whines for it.

Yes, lasers aren't a good toy for a dog or cat. Unfortunately, they can cause some serious behavioral issues similar to OCD in humans. The animal isn't rewarded for the "chase"- there's nothing to actually catch. They start chasing shadows and light from a window- basically, become neurotic- always looking for the "catch" that they'll never get.
Please be very, very careful with this type of play.

Oh my goodness, the laser... that brings back memories! Chewy was FANATICAL about chasing that li'l red dot! In fact we had to spell the word 'laser' unless we wanted a frantic JRT begging for a game - he loved it & his soccer ball best! (He had no interest in shadows/reflections etc. thank goodness - I imagine that it could very well become an obsession, we were lucky I guess!)

Uh-oh... hadn't thought about that. I will be careful with over doing it, but in all honesty I think there are some dogs that have a tendency to neurotic behavior. (Julius isn't one of them, he often outsmarts ME!) He doesn't chase light reflections or shadows ETC. or else I'd be a bit more worried.
Thank you for the info & the warning though.... I will keep a watchful eye out for any behavioral changes.

I discovered that this winter. Oliver had loads of fun chasing it and then the 3rd time I brought it out..Oliver figured out that the light was coming from the leveller and he stopped chasing it. He would instead come to me and beg me to give him the leveller.
I think he wanted to switch roles..okay mommy I'll point now and you chase it like a maniac!!
