My friends who foster dachshunds with San Diego Dachshund Rescue just commited to foster a pupster who just came out of a mill in Arizona. No details yet, I just got an email mentioning it, I'll see the baby tomorrow and get the full scoop. I'm so happy that these doggies are going to get to real homes with real families soon.

We got the little girl today...she's soooooo sweet. A little nine lb black
and tan smoothy. I named her Oliva or Olive for short. She's extremely
timid and I'm taking it easy on her now. She's so thin and looks like she's
had at least one litter of pups. She still needs to get spayed and shots
and all that stuff but we're giving her time to chill. She needs lots of
love, good food and rest.

Here's the deal on the mill: The woman had over 30 dachshunds and other
breeds and didn't always feed them...over half were suffering from severe
starvation...one day the dachshunds got a little crazy and started fighting
and over 15 were killed and left in the cages to rot. They saved what they
could and thank God we have them. Our little girl is going to be well taken
care of. The others are at other foster homes and the humane society. The
humane society is now working the the rescue organizations to rehabilitate
and place them but they go thru Dachshund Rescue for instructions. I can't
wait for you to see this cutie. Wally and Sophie just sniff her and she
sniffs back really gentle. She doesn't really know what to do with us. It
will take time for her to trust. Right now she won't eat so I'm going to
get some Canidae canned dog food from Marlene to see if that will entice her
appitite.

You should all see this poor little baby. Owen and I went over last night and saw her. She has bones sticking out all over the place, her coat is icky and dull and Kris & Brandon had just bathed her... her coat is just falling out in clumps. She just likes to be in her crate, or in your arms. She's not snappy, but she shivers all the time, she's never ever had anyone to hold her or give her Lovies!! <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm20.gif" border=0> It will be months before she will know what it is to be a dog, rather than a money maker, trapped in a wire cage. They named her Olivia, but she'd being called Olive right now since she looks like Olive Oil. Owen sniffed her a couple of time and she didn't recoil or anything. She has little sores all over her. She still needs to be vetted and spayed, though rescue will hold off a while for the spay, until she's healthy enough to go through the surgery. Her ears are disgusting!! Poor Poor baby girl. If people who bought their dogs from a petshop saw her, they'd kick themselves, seeing what is done to another dog so that they could walk into a store and buy theirs.

I hope they take in a FRESH stool specimen IMMEDIATELY! She may be riddled with parasites, & they are tranmittable to the other dogs.

Poor little girl probably thinks she's died & gone to heaven!

I'm soooo glad Olivia (aka Olive Oil) has been rescued! What a terrible life she led- and to think there are hundreds of thousands of dogs like her. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

One rescue at a time- I don't underestimate that!

Big smiles and greetings to her new "parents"

I am so glad Olive has good people to take care of her and help her learn to be all that a pupper can be. People just make me so angryhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angryfire.gif My husband just tried to buy a puppy from a family that don't like her because she barks!!!!! (She is 6 mo. old and a doxie. Get a clue) They wouldn't let her go, but said they might later so he explained about Kill shelters and Rescue organizations and left his business card for them. I can not imagine paying good money for a dog and NEVER reading a line about them. Makes me crazy. Didn't mean to vent but the mis-treatment of these great babies just makes me so madhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angryfire.gifhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angryfire.gif Give little Olive a pat and a slurppy kiss from me and Becky Ann

Little Olive will now have a chance to know it's OK to trust people. That seemed to be Aggie's biggest hurdle on the road from Puppy mill mommie to being a real dachshund. A good diet and possibly some vitamin supplements can do much to help restore a coat and clear up skin problems. I felt so bad when I realized Agie's peeling belly was not due to poor hygiene while we tried in vain for the first few months to kennel train her. Once I got her an exercise pen and she started keeping herself clean rather than walking circles in her own feces (can you say laundry and foot and belly baths 2-3 times a day) I realized the rash wasn't related to hygiene or a reaction to having to be washed 2-3 times a day. As we were able to stop bathing her feet and belly so often it became obvious that her skin at times would be bright red and peel in sheets just like a person with a sunburn. Putting her on vitamins prescribed by our vet and starting her AVO-Derm get her cleared up in about 2-3 months. Within six months people were commenting me on how good her coat looked and she even the hair on her chest was starting to fill in. These little death camp survivors can be afraid of the world and need plenty of extra time and love but also watching the progress they make is so rewarding. For some like Aggie who was so shy she would at first pee on her own tail which was firmly tucked between her legs when ever she would meet another dog may never become outgoing and learn to really trust only their primary care giver others do quite well and develop into a regular little dachshund and will benefit greatly from having other dogs to watch and learn from. With Aggie we took may little steps as major accomplishments. Just watching her walk down the street or through the isles at pet smart with her tail out could be counted as a major success. Having her ask to sit with me in the big swivel rocker was taken as a great sign of love and was as welcome as a face full of kisses from a normal dachshund. Having one of these survivors find the courage to follow you down the hall or give you ankle a little nudge, many things that any young pup will do without a second thought were all landmark days in my life with Aggie. Aggie our 23 months together were not enough but at least I do believe you knew you were loved and that you returned that love you died before you time just two weeks before you would have turned four. I've gone on too long and better get going before the mist in my eyes turns into real tears but every time I read about one of these little death camp survivors the memories come back and I feel the need to both preach and shed a tear.

Hi Amy, I know you are very busy with Olive but when you get a chance can you post a before pic of her. People need to see for themselves what goes on in the Mills. I have a lot of experience with Mill dogs and know that she has a long road ahead. I have a special segment of my website on PM's and would like to incluse Olive's story if that is OK. This is an awareness that must reach the public and be a reality slap in the face. Sorry for the harshness but when you hold a Mill dog while they are dying a slow and suffering death you are as aware as you can be. God Bless you for taking her in and showing her love. I agree with the other poster that you need to get a fecal sample ASAP as these Mill dogs ALWAYS have parasites and dangerous ones. She could also have pyrometria and or an intestional infection not allowing her to eat. If she has hook worm she will die of starvation if untreated. If there are others that have no foster care please call on us and we will help. God Bless,

reading about this little one, and Tom's experiences with Aggie. How these BYB's can live with themselves & sleep soundly at night is beyond me! I am so glad that Olive has been taken from that h*llhole and given a chance at a good life. So sad that 15 dogs or more had to die without such a chance. You people who rescue these dogs are truly :angel1: :angel1: !
Please keep us up to date on Olive and her progress.
