Because of the anniversary date of Cooler's death, I've been thinking about a few of my other past dogs. I wanted to honor these dogs that have passed away.
Cleo died in July 1989 from two strokes after being diagnosed the previous April of congestive heart failure. Taffy died in November 1989 from seizures from a brain tumor. Her little heart couldn’t take the pressure of the seizures anymore. They were both about 12.5 years old when they died.
Hunter died in March 2002 from Valley Fever in his lungs and it just wasn’t getting better. I keep telling myself that when the Valley Fever is in the lungs, that is one of the hardest kind to get rid of, especially for an older dog. Hunter wasn’t able to breathe and he had heavy breathing for several days, but I feel that if I had the right vet, then he would still be alive today. He was 10.5 years old when he died.
Some of the highlights:
Cleo and Taffy:
I used to wear a long dress, and whenever I took Cleo and Taffy for a walk and they got scared, they would hide under my skirt, and then peek out at what they were scared of. It was really cute.
For some reason, my little babies didn’t like some other dogs. Once, Cleo and Taffy, who were 8 and 6 lbs. respectively, chased an Irish Setter away. The owner of the dog fell down laughing. Another time, Cleo tried to attack a Doberman Pinscher by jumping up and trying to bite the neck. Of course, she couldn’t reach the dog’s neck, and the dog backed up and looked at Cleo like she was nuts.
Even though they were spayed, Cleo had a favorite “boyfriend” who was a big and not the most handsome dog I had ever seen and Taffy had a little “boyfriend” that was a Yorkshire Terrier. Cleo also had a best friend that was the neighborhood cat.
I had a baby in May of 1985. When a baby's face is rubbed on one side, the baby will turn its head toward that side and "root" for a bottle. Well, Taffy stood next to my son’s face and inadvertently rubbed it, so my son turned his head toward Taffy and started sucking on Taffy's leg. He stopped after a few seconds and made the funniest face. I guess Taffy's leg does not taste anything like a bottle!
Hunter:
I had bred my dog, Bunny, and Hunter was one of her sons. We decided to keep Hunter. My son wanted to name him Hunter because he thought that Hunter would be a brave little dog. We thought that Hunter would be black and tan, but he ended up being mahogany.
My son and I went to the church county fair. My son got a blue ribbon because he had the prettiest dog. He had brought Hunter.
One day, I was suffering from grief and when I got home, I decided to lay down for a few minutes first. While I was lying down and crying, Hunter came up on the bed and just lay down beside me with his head touching my head. At the same time he was wagging his tail. Just hearing him his tail thumping against the bed brought a smile to my lips. Also, I don’t know how this could happen, but I felt like something peaceful was passing from Hunter’s head to my head and calming me down. It felt like a spiritual mist or cloud was coming from his head and going inside of my head.
There are so many other things that I could say, but at this time, I will say they were so very loving and sweet and I am so very glad I had their companionship.
