View Full Version : Do reds have softer coats (smooth)?

This is probably kind of a dumb question, but I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the smooth coated red doxies usually have softer coats than other colors?
The reason I ask is that I have two brindles, and I've been finding at the past few Meetup events that the red dogs tend to have much softer coats than the others.
Anybody know anything about this? :dizzy:

Kelly, I don't know for sure. But I had a neighbor that had a black/tan smooth and her coat was sligthly rougher then my two boys (reds). Even going against the hair their coat is soft. There's several reasons for coat differences though. I'll let the experts tell those though. ;)

I don't know the answer, but Andi's Speck (gulfcoastdoxies) has got the SOFTEST coat around. I always htought Cricket was real soft until I snuggled up w/Speck. He's a dapple (double maybe? I forget  )

Interesting question... I have wondered myself. Rex is a B&T dapple- while his coat is soft, it isn't very thick. Dutchie is red, with a touch of black down his back spine- very soft and very thick.
I'm interested to see the responses you get back.

Kelly,
Did you pet Schatz on Sunday? He has a very soft coat, especially around his head and neck. His is very thick though as opposed to many of the reds that were there. They were all moving around so fast I had a hard time petting any of them!

So many people (including his groomer) have commented on how soft Buckwheat is. This is especially true of his red parts. His black overlay is, however, much coarser.

Well, Hijinx (my dapple) is very soft, but part of that is because Canadian breed standards allow for one long haired dachsie to be bred into the line of smoothies every so many generations. Otto, my b&t has very, very course hair.
Having said that however, Heide's Kamper is soft as silk and you don't get any darker than that big man!

Connie,
I know that there was one black dog that I petted on Sunday that was very soft. I just couldn't remember which one. It must have been Schatz!

P.S. Are they gone yet? ;)

The two reds in my neighborhood did not have as smooth a coat as my pup, who is chocolate. I think my pup has an incredibly smooth coat (if I do say so myself!)

Snoot and Buster have a good friend (Ruby) who's a smooth black and tan, and she's way softer than Snoot (red smooth). I am always suprised at how soft she is when we see her.

I would like to think that reds are softer! J/K. Rigby is definitely a softie, but she's under a year so it might still be puppy softness holding on. Mr. B is more coarse, though still soft & smooth compared to other short haired breeds.
Gretel is a red and she has a soft coat.
Trixie is Blk/Tan and her coat is a bit coarse.

I think it's the individual dog. Junior had a very soft coat, while Coppers was stiffer. Junior was Coppers sire, so maybe something on the female side? It wasn't diet, because they ate the same food. :dunno1:

Julius and Romie are highly offended at this post! As are Po, Gunner, Petunia, Sophie and Casey I'm sure! :devil1: "Reds??? Softer than US??"
I think it's the individual dox myself. I've met some mighty sparsely (is that a word?? ) haired Red smooths, but I dont know.
Julius has very lush THICK fur. Not just "full" but the actual strands are thick. He's mighty soft though..... *Hmmm* I knw it's a combo of his raw diet, Omega 3 capsules and his frequent bathing.

Kibby would like to report that she is a harsh coated red. Her hair is short, but feels almost like wire and she has an undercoat.
Isabel has an extremely soft coat. People even mention it to me. It is shiny like a silk ribbon and feels like silk, too.

I don't think it's color - just in the genes. I have had one b/t smooth male with a very soft coat. Of my 3 smooth reds, Siglen's coat was so much softer than Heidi's or Gretl's, and Brekke's choc/tan coat is the softest of all, even though she's a longhair - the texture is just so fine and silky. All the smooth dachsie owners at the 2 dog parks have commented on her very fine and smooth long hair.

of our pups are. :emb: I know just a little, enough to be dangerous.
Not trying to offend anyone because unless you really are showing and breeding to improve the breed. WHO CARES!
 :hapfac01:  My mind can only handle just so much information.
I have 2 smooths. Con is a very coarse short coat. But he has wirehair behind him. He is a called a throw back by breeders. But then Zor also a smooth is much softer but he is out of longhair red dam and dapple LH sire.
But then I found that my original doxie that was a LH red was much softer because she was more of a true red. Meaning very little black overlay. The black hair in my others seemed to make the coat a little coarser. JMO from and what I have found with my doxies.
It just goes to show one of the reasons why I don't get into breeding and showing. I will leave it to the experts that understand genetics. It can all be mind boggling... :dizzy:

Carrol - Speck is definitely Mr. Velvet! He's soft all over, but especially around his neck...he's digging on all the pettin' he's getting right now! Speck is a dapple - possibly double with that giant patch of white on his chest...daddy was a b/t dapple and mom was a red dapple. Either way, he's got a gorgeous and very soft coat. ;)
Suzy has a much coarser coat, and Peewee is kind of in the middle although her coat got much softer after we switched her to Royal Canin last year. We'll find out what the new food does. ;)
Hugs,
