View Full Version : The Smooth Dachshund Smell (I think it's like maple syrup)

When I was answering the question about soft, smooth reds (of course I think they're softer!) I got to thinking about that smooth smell mine have. My dogs smell like maple syrup when they get their dachshund scent going. Is this the normal scent I've read about? It's not a bad smell. In the morning, we know they will smell like pancakes. I love cuddling with them when they smell like that. A lot of times they smell like Coconut (moisturizing for Mr. B) shampoo or doggie cologne (Daddy prefers clean to natural) though.
Do your smooths have that smell?

as I have no smooth dachshunds, but based on my feelings about pancakes with maple syrup, I am going to have to come over and sniff yours.

I always think Lucky either smells like cornbread or pancakes (and considering I put maple syrup on both maybe that is the smell) or he smells like Fritos.
Anyway now I am hungry :bounce:

Pssht. I'll trade dachsie scents with you any day ! Julius (when not bathed, which is hardly EVER.) smells like Fritos. I think most everyone else will say the same. Actually, *sniffs Julius* now that I think about it, it's only his foot pads that smell. His coat and breath always smell neutral. Now WHEN bathed (I take him to the groomers once a month for the "works") He smells like Orchids and Freesia! :facelick:
He smells delicious for about 2 and a half weeks out of the month....then the scent wears of....then by the last few days of the month he smells of fritos.
Just in time for the first of the month groomers appointment. Oh yeah .... :smirk: we've got a system.

Everybody used to think Copper smelled bad but me. I just thought he smelled like Copper. He could be still damp from the bath and smelling like fruit to me and a niece would pick him up and say "whew, he stinks!" Strange how it never kept anyone from picking him up or trying to lure him into their lap. It didn't take me long to decide that everyone else was nuts, and I'm the sole sane person in the family. :fierce:

I call that smell the "groggy doggy" smell. Both my smooth haired Rupert and beagle get that when they have been snuggling for a while - - it is absolutely intoxicating to me....I will go over to them and breathe it in :D Rupert's paws smell like popcorn to me and just tonight I figured out what his healthy ears smell like - brown sugar!! My sweet black and tan brown sugar baby!! :circle:

All our dogs have that frito smell, but Speck smells the best. When he gets up from sleeping under the blankets, he smells like warm tortillas or cornbread. And they all have frito feet. I just love the way our doggies smell...just part of who they are. ;)

hee hee! Now that I think about it, Olana does smell like a pancake in the morning! I love her smell, esp. at her neck. I never in a million years thought I would post on a message board that I love the smell of a dog. :faint: But I do, I do!!!!

hee hee!I never in a million years thought I would post on a message board that I love the smell of a dog. :faint: But I do, I do!!!! Hahahaha! Same here. :) Due to Pokey's "leave on conditioner" from the vet, he smells like a warm oatmeal cookie. Near bath time he does get his "funk," but it's plesant. Our doxie by proxy (whippet) smells like sweaty wool socks when I wet her down.
:faint: I chalk it up to DWD!

Well, It's good to know it's normal! Buddha has a smell, it's not bad, but I haven't related to any type of food. It's maybe almost like that musty sweet smell that ferrets sometimes have.
Her smell is the reason I have her. Her previous owner was going to put her to sleep because of it. I think she was just tired of her and looking for an excuse to put her to sleep, and that's the only one she came up with.
It still baffles me! She's a great dog.

I had Oscar on the beach yesterday. Lots of other dogs were slobbering on him. He played a lot and panted a lot. When we got home, I was too tired to bathe him but I did not like the way he smelled.
When he woke up this morning he smelled sweet again. Also, his coat looked better. He was so tired last night that he just did not look good!!! How did he get to smell and look better overnight???
That baffled me!!!
I'm still going to give him a bath.
I love Isabel's smell. I don't even know what it smells like. It makes me kiss her all over.

You're right - no matter what food you think they smell like, they simply smell wonderful!

I can't tell you how surprised I was to read that some of you have dogs that smell like Fritos! One of my Bostons smells like Fritos, especially when she is tired or has been asleep. My daughter smells it to, so I knew I wasn't nuts! But I had no idea that any other dog in the world smelled this way!

We love the way Clay smells...I just can pin point it. I'll lay in bed and sniff her in the morning (she's my cuddle pup).
When we got Rocky, my the big boy smelled bad...even after getting him groomed it did not help, however I don't notice it now, I commented yesterday he's either smelling better or we've grown to not notice it, however a friend was here (and she's truthful to the bone) and said he did not smell bad.

And only another dog lover could understand that a bunch of dog owners could sit around and talk about how much we like the smell of our dog(s)!! :)

Did you change Rocky's food once he came to live with you? Perhaps that made a difference.

Do we :muchlove: our dogs because they smell good ... or do they smell good only because we :muchlove: them?

OK, I must admit that I had never smelled my little Phoebe until I read this post and then I just had to grab her up and smell her. LOL. Her feet smell like Fritos. The rest of her is pretty neutral when it comes to odor, but she does have Frito paws - thanks for bringing it to my attention

I think Oscar is sometimes the Frito type and sometimes Maple Syrup.
Yesterday he was all about dog slobber. He had played with some other pups at the beach.

It is what I have called all of my life the "Warm Weenie Dog" smell. The red smooths esp. have the smell, they REEK of it after a nap, when cuddled in blankets. Miss Mon (red wire) does not really have this smell like Missy Ann (Red, Smooth) does. All of my red smooths have had it and some of the Blk/Tans. I think everyone of them, when warm, have the frito feetsies. I love to smell Miss Mon's feet, although she would prefer I didn't...suspicious of a nail clipping I suppose. When Missy Ann gets warm, I like to take in the smell of her all over, steal it all for myself. It is one of the GREAT Attractions of dachshunds, probably a natural dachshund phermone that attracts us to them. I remember this smell from as far back as my memory will take me. I was born into a family that had dachshunds before I was born. It is probably one of the biggest reasons I would sneek my grandma's dachshund Prince into bed with me when I stayed at their house. I never sniffed glue as a child, but I sniffed dachshunds and I am sure the drug was quite powerful as I have been addicted all of my life. I AM a DACHSAHOLIC!

I honestly never noticed Nook Nook's smell before today. I went out this morning and she was taking a nap in front of the refrigerator. She likes the warmth that comes from underneath it and was curled into a little ball. Her smell was just like "Maple Syrup". (Nook Nook is a smooth red) I smelled her later and didn't smell anything. It seems like the smell is associated with sleep or warmth somehow.

David, I am glad you are coming to read some of the posts and joining in a bit. This is the GREATEST place on earth for dachshund lovers and just to talk with some really great people. Give Nook lots of hugs and kisses from me!
