----------BEGIN ATTACHMENT------------------
Too Many!

I am jaded, I admit.
Having seen too much of man's inhumanity
Toward all creatures great and small,
I oft' despair of we, the so called "higher species," ever rising above
Our baser natures.

I am hardened, I confess.
Having witnessed so much unnecessary suffering
The result of the selfish ignorance & cruelty which
We so easily justify without conscience because we were
Mistakenly given dominion over the weak.

I am angry, I must say.
So sick in the deepest reaches of my soul
That man, with so many resources at his command
Has yet to end the needless deaths of those whom dominion gives us
Duty to provide for and protect.

!Too many! Far too many have I seen!
Too many kittens trapped, doused and set ablaze.
Too many puppies dumped from truck windows along lonely country roads.
Too many cats, unwanted, unloved, forming their own societies-
increasing their own numbers without cease.
Too many hounds lying without shade or water-
twenty to a tiny pen, beaten and forgotten should they refuse to run.
To many herders shot through with arrows and left to die-
in the field where the calf bolted.
Too many workers, beaten with sticks to make them sharp and violent and
mistrustful.
Too many horribly scarred fighters, bloodied in forced battles
then discarded when they can no longer win.
Too many tiny ones, tossed across rooms-
hitting walls, thumping broken to the floor.
Too many breeders living in squalor in tiny wire-bottom boxes-
never to know a gentle hand.
Too many too starved to stand without trembling,
shying from the next bullet or kick yet still patiently awaiting
their master's return.
Too many millions each year born unwanted only to face death-
in cold chambers, struggling in fear,
retching painfully as the air in their bodies
is replace by poison, starving them for breath.
Oh yes, I am jaded, hardened, angry and sick to the very
depths of my soul--
Brows furrow, eyes glare, fists clench
spirit weeps in impotent rage.
And then........

I am humbled, it is true.
Having witnessed the few endeavouring against all the odds
To change the plight of the hungry, the homeless, the injured, the
unwanted
Ever rising toward man's most shining example of selfLESSness.
I stand in awe of what we together can accomplish.

I am given hope-and joy!
As I reach down to rub my fingers through
the furry miracle lying at my feet.
This golden coloured pup, found suckling his dead mother's teat at barely
seven days old,
Rescued, nursed and protected by another, and now
Grown strong, trusting, healthy and proud.
Living without fear because one out of thousands rightfully understood
Her dominion over the weak.

I am warmed, I must say.
At the memory of a strong man before me just yesterday
Holding one of my tiny ones so tenderly in his massive arms,
His wife's eyes alite with excitement and protective love
Seeing not the bald patches of skin still healing
But seeing instead the frightened but beautiful soul
Beneath the growl,
They soothe her fear into hopeful kisses.

You are my hope, my inspiration, my courage, my conviction to go on when
I find myself so jaded, hardened, angry & soul sick
that I would abandon this unending battle we fight together.
It is you, my chosen family, who give me hope and joy,
and laughter and support and the strength to go on.
I am deeply honoured and humbled to be amongst you.

I'm deeply moved on this one. It makes me feel humbled to those who have really seen all the graphic horrors, yet still get in there and do what they do: save lives.

I started to read this at work and had to stop. Thanks for posting this.

On a lighter note, thought I'd let you all know that our favorite Canadian, 2DogsLong (Oscar and Frankie's mom), is placing rescued dachsies now in Canada. She's too busy to post, but she might stop in and read sometime. Give her a hand! She's all alone up there in the Great White North!

Thanks Wienergal.

There are LOTS of people looking for dachsies up here. We just got another DRNA member so I've got some help and I work closely with the Ontario CCDR member. We have 4 adoptions underway (one for 2 dogs) and more coming all the time.

I'm sorry that I don't post much anymore. I have been reading (and crying) along with the posts and I dole out rayz of a frequent basis.

Rescue is very rewarding and I'm hooked. If only I could get rid of this annoying thing called a job that takes time away from rescue work.

Oh my goodness. Am I slow or what? I didn't realize 2DogsLong was our beloved DRNA Canadian connection!! It was a long time before I realized who Wienergal and Shelley were! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/eek3.gif Duh!! lots of rescue people on here. I do applaud you 2DogsLong! We need you up there.

I must also add. Some of you may not consider yourselves rescue when actually you are or at least you have helped. Tom, you have on more than one occassion helped me out when I was frantically looking to help a dog in need. Any of you who post about a dog in need of assistance are really acting as our eyes to help us locate dogs that might not have been found otherwise. So, I applaud all of you who help in even the smallest of ways because even the smallest thing can mean a big change in a needy dog's life. Thank you everyone! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/jacks.gif

Nicely said, Tanya! This board is SO rescue-oriented--it has completely changed my life, and I'm so grateful for everyone on this board!

I know--it's hard to keep track of who's who with the e-mail names, real names, bulletin board monikers, etc. Don't forget Heather and Georgette in New Jersey too! And our CCDR gal, Andrea. Shelley once said it was her goal to have everyone on this board involved in rescue in some way. Some of us who have been on the Zone together and on this board since last spring can really see how close to that goal we're coming.

Ain't it grand????? Rescue ROCKS!
