But I know of a family that has to give up an elderly bassett hound, Beatrice. In her old age, she getting pretty snippy with the young children (2 and 5) (the dog is 12ish, which is old for a bassett)and they don't have the kind of time to dedicate to her that she really needs. They want her to live out her days in happiness, so they won't just give her away to some "random" person. She's also got an excessive shedding problem which has come on in recent years, and she's recently lost her housebreaking. Ideally, they'd find a home close to where we are (Northern Va.) so they could visit her...
They talked about putting her to sleep--but since the vet says she's totally healthy, they don't want to do that either.
Rhese are good people--but everyone has their limits, and I know they are at the end of their rope. I told knew some people involved in dog rescue, and I'd see if I could help them in any way. I'd foster the dog myself, but my husband has allergies and the excessive shedding, combined with the other issues and our two dogs (one of whom Beatrice outweighs by 35 pounds) would not be possible. Any suggestions from you guys?
