Hi Folks,

I don't have an update as of yet. The vet is doing rounds now. As of the last conversation, they will resume treatment later today as long as they feel she can handle it. I am going to hold her tonight through hell or high water though, that I can tell you!

We had some great ideas flowing last night and I am all fired up! Let's keep them coming. I really think Queenie's story is special, and has touched all of us.

I am going to think of how we can get the word out, a website on her may be good. We have some great talent here.

Ok, as soon as I hear anything, I will post. Let's get the idea's coming.

Gosh you guys are SO great!

BTW, as a sidenote, my Maggie is coming along very slowly. She went to the groomers on Saturday, with 6 others, thats a story in itself!

She is still timid, runs when someone approaches her, still barks at my husband. I get kisses, and she actually kissed a friend last weekend which is a first.

The story of the van is sickening, I don't even want to go there.

So, I promise an update later and lets get those ideas flowing.

Hugs
Andrea

First off I hope this afternoons report is good. It sounds like they are doing a great job of monitoring little Queenie and she is such a fighter. We will keep those rays coming. It the vet's office starts to get too bright from all those rays coming in I'm sure Queenie won't mind if some get passed around to other patients.

Perhaps if host space allowed it there could be supplemental pages to Queenie's web site where other mill survivors stories could be told. Those of us who have had the honor of serving as a companion for one of the survivors could tell their stories. We could relate any health problems that had to be overcome. Genetic defects we observed in our companion who were used as breeders. The struggles they had to overcome and how they had to learn it was OK to enjoy life as a dog and to enjoy a family.

I know space is generally an issue and there are so many potential stories out there I suspect the other dogs pages may have to be rotated in and out.

It's a great idea Tom. I am hot on this now.

Queenie is holding her own right now and I am going to visit her on the way home. They are doing another xray today. Keep your fingers crossed.

She really is a miracle and the more I think of what the pain she was in in the mill, and all the others still there, I just want to cry.

I think we can use Queenies story as well as others to try to get the word out.

I'll let you know how she is doing tonight. I can't wait to see her!

Tom, what a great idea. It will not only help get the word out about mills but will help people get a realistic view of adopting a mill dog and hopefully encourage them to give a forever home to one of these deserving doggies.

Andrea, I'm so glad that you get to see her. Give her hugs and kisses from North Carolina. Hoping that the afternoon report is good.

Hi Andrea. Just checking in on our miracle baby. I hope you get good news. I like Tom's idea too. I've never had the honor of rescuing a PM baby, but I have read the stories like Queenie and others and I agree that the word needs to get out. I like the newsletter that HUA puts out and also their fund raiser letters I get with Hope, their puppy mill mascott. Maybe you could put something like that on the web page...people could choose to donate towards the care of puppy mill rescues. Or even donate to fight to shut down PM. Do you know very few people I speak to here in South Georgia have even heard of puppy mills. I asked several students on campus to give speeches in their Communication classes about puppy mills and so far I've had 3 do it. They all came back to me to report how horrified they were and the total look of shock on their classmates faces. Hey, it's not much but it's getting the word out.

Again, I hope Queenie gets a good report and you know she forever remains in my prayers as do you!

How about this...it is not a complete plan but I was trying to think of what to do to let people know about PM dogs. And here is what I've come up with so far. How about contacting Animal Planet. They have a show about Animal Rescues. Or something like that to promote Queenie and the others. Just a thought, it would also be great to have up a web site to go along with it. But to just have a web site frankly I don't think the average pet owner / buyer is going to look up information about PMs. One reason is they don't know about them. I only look at those rescue sites because I know they are there and am interested in the stories even though they break my heart. On the other hand my mom doesn't even want to hear about them because it gets her so upset and she has to avoid stress. What we need is mass media - TV & Radio. Any way just my thoughts on the subject. I do think a web page is a good start but more is needed. HEY, how about a national Queenie Day - Lets get a million march going!!

I hope Queenie is holding her own and her x-rays show improvement.

A Million Dachsie March! I can hear the stomping of little wrinkle feeties now!

Andrea- absolutely estactic about The Queen holding her court at the vet's. She means a lot to me these days. A banner dog for all those poor puppers that have gone before and will come after her. I do wish we could outlaw cruel practices like breeding w/o conscience of any kind.

Keeping all my appendages crossed for an improved X-ray.

Great news, hope she is now going to keep making progress in the right direction.
The ideas coming in are terrific! I love the Animal Planet thought, and delirious over Tom's suggestion about another heading on the Board for stories about mill dogs, if there is room.
I wonder also, if enough of us got together, via letters, if we could convince one of the leading dog magazines to devote a column each month, to Puppy Mill Survivor stories? Worth a shot.
Love to Queenie and family,
Roxane

Hi Queenie, did you have your morning cupa coffee yet? Tell us how you're feeling today.
Andrea, questions:
so how does this medication cause her to react?
what are the long term health effects?
any idea how long she'll need it?

Good ideas but I'm not sure the dog magazine is our best resource in that the readers are a pretty exclusive group. How can we reach a more general population?

Hello Queenie's Angels.

Report as of today is, she is still holding her own. The vet is seeing improvement Yeah!

I may even be able to take her home today or tomorrow!!!

The steroids are working, she is responding to them and hopefully we can kick this pneumonia. This is the first thing that has worked. If I could climb into this computer I would hug all of you!

I have to meet with the vet tonight to discuss Queenie's plan. I don't know where we go from here. I think they are trying to come up with one as well.

You are coming up with great ideas! I am so excited.

Tanya, your students teaching about PM is great! The Animal Planet thing is great as well.

Georgette, as far as damage, I can't see how there won't be any, but we will not know for sure until she is past the pneumonia. Queenie living with her rotten mouth for so long, may have caused damage as well. No way of knowing right now.

Thats all I know as of now, and keep brainstorming.

Sonja, I love the marching idea, we'll have Queenie right out front!

Andrea, I am so so happy to hear that she is improving. Wow!! That is so wonderful.

Sending a hug of joy to you and Queenie. I got tears of joy in my eyes reading your post. I bet that she is going to be so happy to see you tonight.

I have said this before, but I really think that the reason Queenie has been fighting so hard is that you have given your a reason to live because of the love that you have shown her.

Okay, I'm going to stick my snout into this one. First, I'll offer my help as a marketing/communications/writer/graphic designer who's always looking for a "good cause" project to make myself feel better about the rampant commercial lying I participate in to bring in the $$.

The Web is a phenomenal resource for this sort of thing--it allows any group of people to suddenly have a newsletter, a store...all kinds of things....but, you've got to start cheap since in this kind of situation, there's very little money, and a lot of apathy out there in general. So, you've got to be grassroots (can you tell I work for a small company). As a marketer, here's how I'd start.

1. I'd start with press releases. Well written, professional press releases on SOMEONE's letterhead--even if that means creating an organization. Shouldn't be that hard though, as it seems alot of rescuing goes on through CCDR and DNRA--I'd assume these groups have letterhead. Get those press releases into the hands of every local disc jockey, local cable television news channel and local print media person you can find--both in the area the dog came from and the area where you are. Granted you'll send a lot of these out before you get results, but eventually SOMEONE will have a "slow news" day, or you'll hit the right editor. Follow the release up with a phone call--ALWAYS. Tell the dog's story--and make it compelling. Let people know about the "queenie fund"--let them know they can donate to CCDR or whatever and earmark the contribution for the "queenie fund" or whoever's fund.

2. It's the holidays, and people are buying stuff--and buying it now. Raising money for these dogs is critical, but people don't just give--they like to buy when the profits go somewhere else. To start, there need to be things that can be done for essentially no $$ so there's no real overhead, and most of the money goes back to the dogs. Cards, calendars, key chains all sorts of "doxie goods" could be made available--and they could be customized. They could all also come with information about Puppy Mills, and possibly the story of a dog that the purchase was helping, and how someone could continue to help that dog. (You know, like Christian Children's fund does...) I'd think CCDR or DNRA would already have something like this set up, but it doesn't seem so.

That's just my initial thought...

Dear Owned by Chaucer, I read your introductory paragraph 3, no make that 4 times, with the same result.
You are actually volunteering to head up a "Queenie Project", your choice, of course.

I contacted Animal Planet some months ago when there was a lot of publicity about puppy mills (remember that truck that broke down & the pups were confiscated?).

Animal Planet (which is Discover, The Learning Channel, & all the other PBS shows that involve animals & other stuff) sent me a 12-pg e-mail in response.

Basically, they want someone else to do all the work: scripting, photography, financing, travel, etc., etc. From what I understood from it, they want a completely finished, high-quality, professionally-produced product that is ready to put on TV the next day.

And there's no way that I can see us doing that, although it WOULD be the best way to reach the most people.

But if someone wants to try, & ask more questions, & maybe understands the requirements better, you have my blessings.

The only thing that comes to mind about TV is trying to get one of the news magazines to do something. They seem to do the work themselves. Stone Phillips, 60 Minutes, 20/20, etc. Does anyone have any vague ties with any of these?

Georgette, there are long term effects from prednisone, but since Queenie can't fight her pnemonia on her own, prednisone can be her miracle. I posted earlier about my dog Junior who needed prednisone for a lupus like condition and he took it for years finally dying of old age at 14. I think it's a miracle drug.

Morning!

I have some great news, hows that for a change!

Queenie , the Queen, I should say, came home last night!

Her xray's as of yesterday have greatly improved. They have her on prednisone, which you folks already figured out. It is working miracles with her. She is also on Batril still. She is still coughing, but nothing like before.

I am a little concerned about this drug, my mom too had Rheumotoid Arthritis, and was on prednisone. It was a double edged sword.

We are going to wean Queenie off it as soon as this blasted pneumonia goes. I have to call the vet every other day with a report on her, and any changes, she needs to be seen right away.

But, back to happy news. She played with a toy, had some roast beef(oops!)and slept in the big bed.

She found her one winged angel bear under my bed, played with that, and then took a toy away from Dottie the terrible, how's that for improvement!

She was a little sputtery this morning, but again, nothing like before. She has been giving me kisses like crazy! I don't have the heart to tell her how very bad her breath is with those teeth of hers.

I am so happy this morning, and I would venture to guess, so is Queenie.

All those rays are working, don't stop them now.

Chaucers parent, what wonderful ideas! Thank you

Now, listen to Auntie Pamela, Andrea: No worrying about the steroids right now! The drugs Queenie is taking are not the same as the steroids used illegally by athletes. Therapeutic steroids have their dangers, as do all drugs, including aspirin. But they have saved, literally, thousands and thousands of lives and restored quality to hundreds of thousands of lives that were not otherwise worth living. There is no need to worry about long-term side effects at this point.

No worries!!! Just enjoy enjoy enjoy enjoy!! I'm so happy for you!!!!!!!!!

Here come more raaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyzzzzzzz for the angel girl!!!

Way to go Queenie. You are are little breathing Apollo 13 about the time we think you are in an impossible situation they (your vets and your mom) figure out another way to use some duct tape and keep you coming back stronger than ever. Now you realize you have a very important mission awaiting you. Once you get yourself all well you are going to be spokes dog for so many others still trapped in bad places like where you use to be.

Andrea, we will continue to send our rays, even when Queenie has a clean bill of health she will continue to receive rays. Don't worry about the prednisone. The benefits for many patients far outweighs the cons. Just look at how rapid Queenie is bouncing back when just a week ago you feared you were loosing her. There may continue to be some ups and down but enjoy the ups and hope they far outweigh the downs. Queenie is proving once again that she is a fighter. Watch her around that turkey in a two weeks. She may decide that whole bird should be hers and if she continues to improve as much as she has the last few days you just might not be able to resist her look.

We are all continuing to send our best wishes and rays. May Queenie's lungs continue to clear and her general health improve so that some day her mouth problems can be addressed. Just take things one day at a time (and we know you can do that). We are all blessed and learn much about life by each additional day the Queen is with us.

Best wishes,

Tom and the boys (Frank & Tanner)

Andrea that is great news about Queenie! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/jacks.gif

Here are some thoughts on the Queenie the Miracle campaign:

TV - maybe one of the local TV stations who are affiliated nationally with ABC, NBC, CBS or FOX would do a story on her. If done well and national picks it up . . . wham! Then there's a shot at some of the Prime Time News Magazine's like 60 Minutes etc. A well constructed letter to the News Program Manager of each station may do the trick.

Website: A free webpage without any of those annoying ads of their own is available at http://www.redrival.com - then a free redirect is at http://cjb.net which allows you to more appropriate name for your site ie; http://Queenie.cjb.net so when people go to this site it actually takes them to the site on redrival, but shows the cjb site name in your browser window and they include free email redirects as well. ie; Andrea@Queenie.cjb.net which will actually be delivered to whatever real email address you want. The first part of the email before the @ sign can be anything, anytime without notice. I hope that makes sense . . . I've been pretty sick for a few days. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

Just a few thoughts . . .

Continued RAYZ to Queenie and you Andrea . . . it couldn't have happened without your love & devotion!

I am so so so happy to hear that her Xrays looked better, that she is home and that she is coughing less. I am estatic. It never ceases to amaze me what miracles love alone can produce.

Just wondering if you've admited that she's already in her forever home yet...

So many great ideas have been generated. All this time that Queenie has been sick, I've been wanting to do something to make her better. Short of going to Andreas and feeding her chicken soup (which I was pretty sure Andrea was already doing), there wasn't anything I could psycially do. But now, we can actually do something to help other dogs like Queenie.

And definately count me to help out on this.

I know when we had our picnic the local ABC affiliate came out. Hadn't thought of a college media group either.

Isn't it amazing how much Queenie means to all of us. There is a reason she came to me and then to you folks, to get us to do something. Well, we won't let her down. We are comingg up with great ideas. Now we have to implement some.

I can't wait to go home and see her, and hopefully she is still doing well.

Hmmm, I wonder what the Queen would like for dinner tonight????

I been thinking and this is what I've come up with so far. Since the gift-giving season is upon us I think we need to act as soon as possible. Christmas is a big time for puppies to be sold and bought. I think we need to have someone design a letter head just like Owned by Chaucer suggested. Then we need someone with letter writing skills to draft up a letter about Queenie and what she has been through. Explaining that when buying a puppy the buyer needs to avoid pet stores and the reason why. Even going into detail about puppymills. Also information about choosing a dog needs to be touched upon. So many people see a puppy and buy it with out knowing if that type of dog will fit their life style. If this could been accomplished maybe the members of this board would be willing to do research and find out newspaper, TV, and radio addresses so the PSA's (pubic service announcements) along with the letter could be sent out. Most TV stations do a local news editorial by the station manger so maybe we could get them to do our letter. If the members would divide up into their home states (and the surrounding states if necessary) we could blanket the nation and Canada. We could also include Dateline, 20/20, and 60 Minutes. I think it is important to have a web site up and running with puppymill information, pictures, and stories. If we don't have time to set up a site maybe we could piggyback with someone else. That way the newspapers, radio and TV stations know we mean business and not just a fly by night association.

I'll check to see if KU (University of Kansas) or K-State (Kansas State University) has a photo journalism class.

I am so glad to hear Queenie is doing better and even a little playful. More rays coming from Mitz and me.

Andrea, don't stop the prednisone until the vet says you can. The side effects of it are usually only for LONG-TERM USE, like for years. Short-term, it doesn't have enough time to depress the gland that makes it's own. I believe the only short-term drawback would be if she were outright allergic to it, which she obviously isn't. (Swelling up is one sign in humans.)

We're really glad to hear the Queen is now reigning at home & pounding on her stuffed subjects. I dropped a good-sized chunk of cheddar cheese on the floor today, & Penny grabbed it & ran off. She said she was eating it in Queenie's honor. (????)

Hi Folks

I haven't posted because Friday this site was being worked on and my home server has been down all weekend!

Anyway, Queenie is still holding her own. She is still coughing though and I have a call into the vets now. I would have thought by now, her cough would be gone?

She was a pistol this weekend though. I bought some rawhide chewys Saturday, and Queenie has been carrying hers around. It's so cute. She only puts it down to eat!

True Doxie Moxie! I guess I will have to keep a supply handy!

Andrea

She was hiding under a table yesterday with it!

Worried about Queenie all weekend.
So glad to hear the good news!

Hi Andrea,

Glad to hear that Queenie is doing well. Just keep on those steroids as long as the vet recommends. She will have to be tapered off of them. While I'm no vet I'm not surprised she is still coughing some. Even a mild case of pneumonia in humans can take a little while to get rid of. I thought of Queenie on Saturday when they showed a short film clip of a dog with pneumonia at the pet first aid class I attended. No they weren't saying hot to home treat it they were just showing some examples of abnormal breathing. The poor dog was in an oxygen cabinet but standing on all fours keeping it's head level with it's back in order to keep as direct an airway to it's lungs as possible. Every breath was labored and it'd hind legs were giving out from exhaustion. The dog did survive after being treated at the hospital.

We will continue to send rays. Any not immediately needed can be stored and used when Queenie is well enough to start thinking about her mouth.

Best wishes,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

I think Tom's idea is a great one. A Hope Chest for Queenie with all our good thoughts stockpiled for her dentistry.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/halo.gif
Andrea, it sure sounds like she has made it over a major hurdle. She is showing her true dachsie colors!
