View Full Version : Old dachsie thrown away

Guys, I got a call from our local HS at about 1:00 this afternoon. The girl there asked me if I would take a dachshie they just got in. Because he's old and I'm in rescue, she agreed to release him to me with no fee. What happened to this dog just angers me. This poor dog - 12 yrs. old - was thrown from a car. They just didn't want him and threw him from the car!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angryfire.gif Thank goodness two girls witnessed this and picked up the poor dog. They turned him in to the HS. This dog hasn't got any teeth either. I should hear at 4:00 if he is HW pos or neg. I'm going to pick him up this afternoon. Please pray that this dog is in good shape and HW negative!! I'll let you know.

As much as I know the older guys need homes too I haven't been able to make myself consider anyone over 4 for a possible addition to my family in the past. Now that I have two healthy younger guys I would consider an older addition if I thought we could afford another one. I just get too attached to my little buddies and with the younger ones hope we will have a long happy life together. I don't know how anyone can have a dog and just toss it away.

"Funny" you should write about this Tanya. I just stopped here quickly on my way to the DRNA site to make my plans for tomorrow because of EXACTLY THIS. Heather called me earlier this evening in regard to a partially paralyzed (front legs!) 10-year-old dachsie who needs surgery. Scenario: Owners take dog to vet & discover costs of surgery. Later dog is found on the street but fortunately turned into a vet. By coincidence the vet recognized the dog who was his patient and the local SPCA IS pressing charges. I'm going to try to rescue the poor little guy tomorrow. Incidentally he is being kept in a cat's cage in which he can barely budge.

Tanya, Georgette, and Heather, bless you and good luck in your efforts to help these poor dogs. It's been a tough day in rescue, with Mr. Beasley's passing and these two sad cases.
Tanya posted a message on the DRNA board that the 12-year-old dog is heartworm-positive. Big surprise--an owner who would throw an old dog out of a car wouldn't bother to see to his health. There is a possibility that he can be treated, though, so keep your fingers crossed.
Would everyone light a candle tonight and send prayers, thoughts, rays--whatever you have handy--to all the dogs who are suffering. There are days that just break your heart, and this is one of them.

Hi everyone.
I read about the dachshie you are talking about Georgette on the DRNA board. I hope you get him. What do you know about his possibility of recovery? Good luck Heather and Georgette.
Well, I took my little rescue whom I've named Benjamin (Ben)to the vet this morning for a check. The HS found him HW+, but the vet will recheck...but lets face it...we all know he's goona be +.
When I went to pick him up from the HS, he was not at all what I expected to see. I was expecting just an old dog with no teeth. This dog has scars all over. A big scar down the side of his head and under his eye. He is missing 2 small chunks out of his left ear and the entire half of his right ear is gone. But in spite of all that, he is so happy and full of energy. Very playful and will gum you to death! starved for attention and will bark if you forget to scratch his belly. The vet tech doesn't think he is 12, but just looks older because of hard living. I should know sometime after lunch about his health status and if HW treatment will be an option for Ben. I sure hope so. Besides his ragged appearance, he seems active and healthy as he can be.
Please remember Ben and say a little prayer that he is treatable. You can look at him and know his life has been hell. I would love to make his remaining years happy ones!

Tanya, I'm keeping all digits tightly crossed for Ben. If he IS younger and just looks older, successful heartworm treatment might be more a possibility, yes? I'm hoping hard. Would hate to lose this one before he's had a chance to experience a few happy and loving days....
Keep us posted!

I forgot to mention earlier that the girls who found Ben did not get a license plate number.
Here is the latest on Ben. The vet thinks he is around 8-10 years old. His heart is very strong and his HW test came back a slight positive. The vet recommends treatment and says the odds are in Bens favor.
My husband has developed an attachment to Ben and has decided to keep him. He is a sad looking dog, but we think he is beautiful.
Ben has his teeth, but they have been ground to the gum. So, his teeth didn't just fall out. Has anyone heard of this? ALL of his teeth are ground to the gum. Do you think he was a chewer and someone would file his teeth down like that??
Anyway, keep your fingers crossed and send healing thoughts to Ben, our new son, and pray he gets through treatment.

Who knows what poor Ben had to survive- he might of never been fed or chained up so he chewed bones until he ground his teeth down.
I send what rayz I have left...
It's been a hard day in the mines. I had the police and CPS come and take a child away to foster care this afternoon. I'm sort of feeling very yucky at this point http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif even though I know it's for the best.
Ben sounds like a treasure. Sorry to hear you had a hard one too,Wienergal. Georgette- your story is awful too. Poor babies all over the world!

Is the hair worn around his neck? Sometimes dogs will chew on their CHAIN to try to get to food or water.
Also, since he has other physical damage, the "owner" may have had another favorite dog that tended to attack him. If he managed to do some damage, the owner may have wanted to "teach him a lesson" so he couldn't fight back effectively.
Does anyone know if Murder By Irresistible Impulse is against the law?
Fate is a b***h! A friend of mine died Sunday night of a massive heart attack. He was only 43, took care of his family, loved his dogs, & was a fine employer. I wish I could be the one to determine who lives & who dies! PUPPY MILLERS & TRASH OWNERS, STEP UP & BE COUNTED! ZZZZZAPPP\\\!!!

Ben started his HW treatment this morning. I called to check on him and they say so far he is doing great.
his hair was not worn down around his neck. He does feel a little lumpy around the neck area though. I asked the vet tech to have the Doc look at it.
I have heard of rock chewers wearing down their teeth...but EVERY tooth in his head?? My vet says he has never seen anything like it before. He says it looks like it was deliberate. I hope this goes well. I'm going try to get a picture or two so you can see what a sweet boy he is. Although he did bite me last night! He was sleeping in my lap rather fitfully, so trying to comfort him, I placed my hand on his back. Little rat bit me! Of course he only has gums so no harm was done. Thanks for the good thoughts!

Rays on their way to Ben. Let us know how he is doing. I'm sure glad the vets here recommend heart guard even though hear worms are not very common in this area.
The one good thing I can say about the mill that Aggie came from is that I don't believe any of the twenty or so dachshunds who all came from the same dispersal auction (thank you HUA) tested positive for heart worms. I believe heart worms are suppose to be rather common in Kansas (or was it Missouri). I don't know if they were just a lucky group of dogs or if the kennel owners used some type of heart worm treatment. One other possibility is that they kept the place so covered with insecticide that no misquote could live long enough to infect a dog. This last possibility may not be that far off. For the first year that I had Aggie we were constantly fighting toe and pad infections. Talking to the folks at Hearts United there were reports of several other dogs from the same mill who also had similar problems.

He is really cute!! I am so glad that you got him. I will be rooting for him on the heartworm treatment!! Hopefully everything will go very smoothly.
I don't understand how someone could throw him from a car, but then the more I get involved in rescue, the more I don't understand people.
It's funny in rescue you seem to see the worst of people (when people do things like this) and the best of people (Just yesterday I saw wonderful people in action - in a matter of few hours a transport got arranged for tonight to get 2 Eskimo Spitzs from NC to MD. They were going to be put in the gas chamber in the next day or so. I get the pleasure of driving these two puppers on the first leg tonight. I can't wait to meet them))

Day 2 of HW treatment and they say he is doing just fine so far. They tell me he has become the office favorite which makes me happy. I know he is getting lots of love there. I don't know for sure if his teeth were purposely filed down, but that's what the vet seems to think. He's so sweet, that I think the bite I received was because I frightened him while he was asleep. Keep sending prayers. Thanks for all the comments and thoughts. I think Ben is pretty darn cute too!

Ben is doing very well so far. Fingers crossed. He is getting to feel better from the HW treatment so it is harder to keep him still. He loves to chew on our noses, but it feels so wierd since he only has gums. Yes...I do let him chew on my nose...I'm odd. You have to picture him doing this with that long tongue hanging out the side. He tries to lick your face and it's like he has no control over that tongue. He has gotten to where he pulls his bed from his crate and puts it where ever he wants it. I hope he continues to do well after his second round of HW treatment. That won't start until around Dec. 8.
We don't know for sure what happened to Ben's teeth, but the vet says he has never seen anything like it. He could have worn them down by chewing a chain or cage. Just don't know.
I can hardly wait until we get the all clear so he can run and play with the other dogs. You can tell he wants to.
One thing I've noticed though that looks odd. When Ben sits - bottom on the floor with his front legs straight. His right elbow sorta sticks out. Looks like he has his hand on his hip kinda. Some might think my Ben is an ugly dog...but I think he is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

That's what Betty had. It was definatley easier on her than the first treatment. However, she was still pretty lethargic and didn't want to eat for about a day. She had a very upset stomach the day she got the treatment.
Yeah!!! I'm so happy you are on the homestretch. My vet had us wait 6 weeks between the two treatments and it just made the whole process seem so long.
Tanya
11-30-2000, 11:32 AM
Our vet said wait 25 days and then come back for the oral dose. Then bring him back in a week to check. I hope he does ok. He has been eating like a pig lately but he still has some bony hips. I think about Betty and Kibby and hope Ben will be happy and healthy soon. It breaks my heart when he cowers as I approach him. He will learn to trust again though because I have promised him that as long as I live, he will never be hurt again.
