As many of you are aware, a group of DRNA members decided to leave the organization and form their own group, Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue. I was just in the process of joining DRNA when this happened, and was horrified to find that ALL of the DRNA people in northern Illinois went to CCDR, leaving me alone and inexperienced in all aspects of rescue other than home visits, which I had been doing for a few months.
As soon as I became a DRNA member, the e-mails started coming, and this weekend (it's always on a holiday weekend, isn't it?), there was a real crisis. An elderly woman had to go and live with her son because of her health, and she left behind two dachsies, who were living alone in her house. Her son went over to feed them and let them out, but he wanted to sell the house, and he wanted the dogs out of there. We were told that he was leaning toward putting the dogs in the local shelter, which is apparently a pretty awful place, and not many dogs are adopted out of there.
Well, I can't foster and I have NO foster resources yet, so I was e-mailing frantically, trying to find someone who could take these dogs.
I e-mailed everyone on the CCDR list in this area but got no responses. It turns out that everyone was away--of course!--and this morning, my mailbox was full of offers of help from CCDR. As of now, Anna, one of the CCDR folks, has taken over, and the dogs will be fostered within the next two days.
I just thought you all would like to know that, despite political disagreements and differences in points of view, when it comes to loving dachshunds, everybody DOES work together. I'm so grateful to CCDR for doing what I was unable to do and for putting the dogs first!

I was wondering how it all turned out. Congrats on your first solo mission. You did great. How old were the doggies?

Hi Pamela;
Don't you just sit around with your heart in your throat when there is an emergency and it seems you are powerless? And then don't you just take the deepest breath possible, when all those great people rush in to find a solution? Working together _has_ to be the name of the game or we are all jousting at windmills (puppymills in some cases).
Such really good news,
Roxane

Pamela,
I'm so happy things worked out . . . and they should if we all have Dachsies first and move the politics aside in times of crisis . . . .which happen all too often.
How sad that the elderly seem to never be able to take their pups with them when they lose the ability to live by themselves. Why are people so cold-hearted? Not only regarding the dogs, but the hoomans who "need" the dogs?!
I'm just glad that the pups are heading out of that lonely house and into the homes of someone who will continue to love them. That is what matters most of all.
Ya did good, Pamela. Take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back! You deserve it.

MAN!!! My heart was in my throat when I read the first part of your story. And then RELIEF flooded over when I heard the happy news of these doxies rescue. Makes me sooooo mad that family members are unwilling to help in a crisis situation. Why couldn't this man take the dogs into HIS home until more permanent rescue was available. People are soooooo D#!M selfish sometimes. So glad YOU were there and all came forward for the sake of 2 lost and lonely dachsies!
You done good!!!

What a wonderful initiation. I'm so very proud of you all. Forget making your day - that experience will help to set the tone for lots of your rescue efforts. You really seem to be diving into this.
Um, how did your drive go yesterday?

Thanks for all the support! I felt bad at first that I couldn't handle this situation ON MY OWN and had to ask for help. So I think this will be a good learning experience for me--if you ask for help, you're liable to get it! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif
The dogs were two males, a five-year-old standard and a two-year-old mini. The woman's son finally decided to let his mother keep the standard, and the mini is going into foster care, then will be put up for adoption. I'm glad the woman was able to keep one of her dogs; old age is hard enough without having to give up your best friends too.
Georgette, the transport was postponed until Wednesday. I'm driving a pup named Kramer to Kalamazoo. I will try really, really hard not to fall TOO much in love with the pup during the two-hour drive... http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

Wienergal! You are my hero!
How scary to be the ONE to have to make all the calls on something like this, but I guess this is only one of the many stories yet to come!
Glad at least one dachs got to stay with the lady. I hope I never fall into the hands of folks that won't let me live with my 28 animals... Sonja

Nice work, Pamela. Rescuing is very special and it's great to know that there are people out there who don't sit on their hands and wait for someone else to solve the problem. All right!!!

Hooray Pamela!! I think it's great that the two groups can work together. I joined DRNA right before the split and was very concerned for the group and the dogs we serve. I emailed Andrea (aka Dukey's mom) regarding 3 dachsie pups named Winken, Blinken, and Nod. Andrea said she would get right on it. I felt so good knowing I have 2 groups of good folks to call on when the dachsies are in need.
Andrea, I know you are busy with the puppymill bust, but can you update me on the 3 pups.?
Thanks to all who do rescue!
