We are all use to hear the horrors of dogs rescued from puppy mills and unloving homes that I thought I'd update you all on how my girl Shana is doing.
When I first brought her home (almost three weeks now), it was a little chaotic to say the least. Pluto accepted her into the house, much to my surprise, but she was something else - barky and agressive. I really thought I made a mistake and that Pluto was going to be miserable.
But each day got a little better, except for one horrible fight. Some friends on this board got me through it. THANK YOU!
This morning when I got up, Pluto was cuddled into my back, his usual spot. Shana was on the pillow next to mine staring at me. I smiled at her and she leaned over and gave me a kiss on the nose. Aaaawwwwww - what a sweetie. I can't tell you how happy that made me. I, of course, didn't realize that her adjustment was greater than ours.
She had lived in a number of houses over the past few years and with the exception of her foster parents, I don't think anyone showed this girl any affection. Her foster mom told me she didn't play with toys (she does now), wouldn't burrow under covers (she does now) and she has learned to beg at the table. I don't feed her. She loves to be on the bed and vocalizes her wants pretty clearly, though it did take a while for me to understand. (dopey me)
Bottom line - don't let these older rescues languish in shelters. They really do deserve a chance to live a good life with people who love them.
Enough sermonizing - though today is Sunday. Thank you all for being so supportive and thank you Pam for letting me know about Shana. You did a mitzvah.
