I have a question about shedding. My little girl is about 5 months old and is not shedding much at all. I wouldn't expect her too just yet anyways though. BUT, my question is when did everyone else's puppers start to shed? Is it normally just the smooths that shed? And what can be done to minimize the shedding? Thanks for the help!! :thanx:

I'm puzzled by this too!! My puppers are both smooths and I don't see any shedding. I don't do anything special to prevent it - they just don't seem to shed!! :dunno:
Of course - I'm pretty happy about it!! :D

My two longhairs, Heidi and Princess do shed, but not that much, they are 9 months old. I will find clumps of hair in the corners of their crate when I am cleaning it, and around the house in corners of the stairs, but I also have a cat too and his hair is black also, so the hair I vaccum up is a combo of all three of them.
I think maybe the shorthaired doxies probably don't shed as much or you just don't notice it cause their hairs are so tiny whereas the longhairs have much longer hair and it is much more noticeable..
I would be glad too if mine did not shed, but it is not really that much,,

No shedding here either. I think that shedding in smooths would be a sign of a skin or diet problem. Oliver is a smooth and never sheds unless he is really stressed out..ie visit to the room of doom. Tammy is a LH and she sheds a little but that is kept under control with regular brushing and I think that the salmon oil helps too.

Spike is a year and a half and so far hasn't really shed. He is actually my 9yo sons dog and gets a bath every week. The kid doesn't want to bathe himself that often! Go figure.

Bella is 7 months and sheds very little. Smooths shed but just not that much and it is less noticeable because of their short coat. Salmon oil also helps I suspect. No complaints here! :D

Wow, that's great news! I guess I just figured that the smooths would shed more...like our short hair Shar-Peis. Boy do those cutes shed!!!!! :dizzy: Then again they are like 10x Cocoa's size! Where can I get salmon oil? Is it something that I apply directly to her food or water or to her coat?

Izzy is 6 months old adn doesn't really shed. The only time I really notice it is if I have on something really light colored and pick her up, and even then it is only a few hairs. I think I read somewhere that dachsies don't really shed much though.

You can pick up Salmon Oil capsules at your drug store in the vitamin/herbal section. I get mine at Cosco. It's a supplement. Since she's so young and small just a couple of drops on her food should be lots for her. Tammy and Oliver are 6 years old and weigh 15lbs, they get one capsule (1,000mg) once a day. They love the taste and it's easy I just give them the capsule and they crunch away at it.
When I got Oliver he has a lot of bald spots and dry skin. Now he's dry skin free and has a lovely shiny coat. I get a lot of compliments on both of their coats.

Ooo, thanks for the info. I'll run over to Costco and pick some up. :D

Just as a note, that is a bit much bathing for a dog. It's not great for their skin or coat.
Most dogs don't need to be bathed at all, exept if they roll in something stinky.

I read somewhere on a dachsie site that it takes 6 months for a dachsie's coat to get their natural oils back into their coat after bathing.
Once or twice a year was suggested and using a damp wash cloth to wipe them down instead.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

whoever wrote that 6 month recovery time was REALLLLLLY erroneous in their thinking. It takes any dog a day or two for their skin to recover their oils fully (so remember if you use Frontline or those type of things to not apply them immediately after a bath but a few days afterward and it takes a few days after a bath for Frontline and those things to REactivate because they are spread by the oil on the skin) but no where near 6 months. A once a week bath is OK (many show dogs get that much) BUT I hope you are using a very mild shampoo and I would suggest a cream rinse, too, if you are doing it that frequently (unless you have a wirehair <G>). Truthfully, a *rinse* every other week instead of a real bath might be a good idea unless you have a reason for needing to control odor issues. Some dogs truly are more odiferous than others :pullhair:
And for those of you whose smooths are NOT shedding much - lucky you!!!!!! Smooths usually do shed more than the other two varieties in my experience so y'all have some extremely healthy children!!!! The wirehair usually breaks off, the longhairs make nice dust bunnies that are easy to pick up and the smooth hair - well, it sticks *in* things :) Just my experience y'all.....

My smooth sheds, but more so in winter than any other time. I think it is because of the dryness in our area once the furnace is used and the wood insert starts being used. He only gets bathed when he rolls in something really smelly, but when he does, I use an oatmeal shampoo and cream rinse.

My girls shed. Not as much as the cat, but you can always tell we've had red pups on our laps when we wear dark clothes! :D
When Penny was a puppy, the vet told us that it wasn't neccessary to bathe a dog unless there was an odor problem. Penny will be 7 in January and she's never had a real bath..... Of course I wipe her down with a damp wash cloth when she gets muddy, etc. but my poor dirty dog has had to clean herself all these years!

Schatz who is my smoothie, sheds too. He has very healthy skin and his coat is gorgeous. He has several LH in his background and his coat seems to be longer than most smooths I have seen. His seems to be seasonal which I think is pretty normal. Kipper has not lost any fur that I can tell. His long hair is just starting to come in and what a hilarious site he is. Patches of long hair in different places!
