Ok guys, I hope you can help with this. Letters need to be written and donations given (if possible) to the following link. Word of warning . . . .this is BAD! I have never in all my years of rescue seen such a horror. I knew that people were horrid, but this adds new meaning to the word. And now the "owners" want to sue the rescuers.
http://www.dalrescue.com/Duchess/duchess.html

I'm sorry to dump this on you, but I hope you will forgive me and help. I am working on a letter to the D.A.'s and the AC office. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer these people and any words you may write to save this sweety from the people who "love" her so much <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm21.gif" border=0>

mary ( I have a good friend who has a Dal and Rosie is kinda my god-pup. I kept picturing her face on this baby and have been crying for 10 minutes now. Rosie was found in a Dumpster--and that's bad enough!)

Everyday at work, I check out this board while eating my lunch. Today, I could not eat after reading this, and honestly don't know if I will eat tonight.

I can't even put my emotions into words. I just don't know what to say. How can people think this is acceptable behavior?

I have sent a letter based on the sample given.

<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm4.gif" border=0> Each day my outlook on the human race dwindles.......

This is a real travesty....not only do we have a REAL case of animal abuse and neglect but we also have elected officials turning a blind eye in a feeble attempt to save their own A$$es. I have just about spewed letters to anyone and everyone on that list and my checkbook is out.

Is there anything else that can be done????

I think this warrants national news coverage myself!!!

Ditto to everything that members are saying. Aside from the perverse nature of some people, a strong component of what permits this to be an ongoing problem is the fact that here in NC, animal abuse is only a Misdemeanor I or II. I suspect these are not the only unfortunate dogs to ever have been owned by those people. With penalties amounting to no more than a slap on the wrist, sadly they will probably not be the last.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/mad.gif

Roxane,

Kris is right--this needs media coverage. Maybe they can do something positive with their power for a change. The more people involved and the louder we roar the more can be accomplished. How can we go about getting the media's attention? Any ideas?

I truly do not understand how people can be so completely devoid of a heart and soul. I saw Hollowman tonight and there was a scene in it where an invisible dog is killed--a couple kids in the audience said: "Way Cool!" This is the start of the heart and soul disappearing. The mother only said: "Shhhhh" Is that scary or what?

Maybe we all should storm the NC ramparts and create enough attention in the area that they have to do something.

What about writting letters to NC newspapers asking them to print a article ... i know the Greensboro News and Record has a website... http://www.thedepot.com I dont know about the Winston Salem Journal though but they are my 2 local news papers ... and what about radio stations ... we have a country station here called Whistle 100 wonder if i could call them maybe they could mention something about it on the air. Hmmmm the local news ... now that would be AWESOME... if we could get the story on there... i know its all over the internet 1000s of ppl are mad about the mistreatment of these dogs!! Im sure if we all banned togather we can do something! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/think.gif

You go, Jen! <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm1.gif" border=0>
I bet most people in the area know nothing about these dogs. Why would the local law enforcement bring the wrath of the people down on their own heads?

I'm going to continue to write letters and let me know if I can help getting the media's attention. Usually that's not too hard . . . except when you really need them. Hey, I have an idea http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/think.gif you know how local tv stations have news people who have like an investigative team to help people get their money back on things they got scammed for? Do you guys have one of those there? Maybe we can get them?! There is a "cover-up" and news people just loooove those! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif:

What else can we do? Hmmmmmm . . . .

Hi Jen:
Missed yesterday's posts. I see you've been one busy gal making a big, big difference. If as much attention can be brought to this issue, as was to the Wyoming tragedy, abuse and rescue may get the attention those issues deserve.
I find more and more that I am spending time writing letters of protest or information. I really feel that it is just one more way we can help.
I will add my voice to the message you are sending. Thanks for getting the ball rolling, especially since this one is closer to home.

Thanks Roxane ... i have kinda made this my personal issue lately because i cant believe that our state would ever even consider giving these ppl that dog back or letting them continue to keep the other dog that they own ... in my eyes that shows us that our beloved (yeah rite!) state needs ALOT of changes when it comes to animal welfare... I have been calling all over town trying to get this story on the evening news with Fox channel 8 ... so far no luck... i think they are scared to admit how behind the times our state is when it comes to these issues... it really outrages my husband and i to no end...but we will keep trying as long as there is a chance that we can keep these idoits from EVER owning another pet in thier lives... and to keep those wonderful ppl that rescued her out of trouble!! Thanks for your help too... every little bit helps these ppl should fry for what they did to this dog. <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm4.gif" border=0>

GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO WROTE AND CALLED. YOU CAN BE EFFECTIVE. JUST LOOK:
This from another list:
I received this reply tonight from Joe Bowden Harnett County Commissioner:
Hello to everyone; This is a sad case of animal abuse and neglect by an individual or individuals to an animal who is known to be "Man's Best Friend", and I am sorry that it could happen anywhere, and especially here at home in North Carolina, in Harnett County. The person responsible has been charged by the Sheriff's Department and DA's office for cruelty to animals. The trial date is set for September 21st, 2000. The animal control officer who did not get out of his truck has received a verbal reprimand from his supervisor and all other animal control officer's have been briefed on their responsibilities. I believe that now we need to find a good home for "Duchess", and I am sure that this will be easy to do, because this story has touched many Hearts and has shown us that we may need stricter laws concerning animal abuse or neglect here in North Carolina. Thanks to all of you for your email, letters, faxes, and phone calls. This case just illustrates that we still have people who care. Thanks,
Joe Bowden
Harnett County
Commissioner

Just a Verbal reprimand?!!? <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm4.gif" border=0> That ACO should be fired on the spot in my opinion... I saw somewhere that in the last 3days there has been over 500 ppl sign the petition ... whooohooooo!

Yes, yes, yes!!!!!<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm17.gif" border=0> I agree Jen, the guy shoulda been fired . . . after being taken out and pummeled. But, maybe he'll think twice about just ignoring the next animal who needs his help.

Perhaps Tom and his letter hitting their money pushed 'em over the edge!?

Let's all send healing and loving Dachsie Rayz to Duchess and her son. I'm sure whoever adopts her will treat her like the queen she is for the rest of her life; as it should be! Poor baby <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm38.gif" border=0>

Has anyone heard how she is doing?

I havent heard anything new on the situation ... it was on the news in Fayetteville NC ... im sure that someone will adopt her as soon as shes better i know shes on morphine for the pain in her leg and is resting with a foster family at the moment i think because they dont want the rescuers to have her (ie because they live next door to the abusers <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm23.gif" border=0> ) We are sending TONZ of healing Dachsie and Schnauzer Rayz to Duchess and her son Duke http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

If you know which newspaper/station reported this matter, contact them & ask for a follow-up. Tell them about all the interest. It would be really nice if it managed to hit the wire services.

Does 60 Minutes ever handle anything like this? Would they be interested, do you think?

I read the update on this whole situation. I have to admit.......I am disappointed how certain aspects of this case was handled.

The Moats were formally charged (YEAH!!) just like they should be. The lady who has Duchess now was silent during the Commissioners meeting. She made no mention of the donations that were sent to help towards Duchess' care (she stated that she paid the bill herself) <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm4.gif" border=0> INCREDIBLE!!!! If it wasn't for the nationwide concern and donations, things may not have turned out as they did.

At any rate, I am glad to hear that there is some justice in the world for our animal friends.

And here is the good news:

Just to let everyone know that the owners of Duchess the Dalmation from Harnett Co. went to court Thursday. They were convicted of animal cruelty and are on probation for 5 years, may not own a pet during that time and must do 50 hours of community service. I hope their community service includes something (very supervised) involving helping animals. I haven't heard what, if anything, will happen to the ladies that rescued Duchess. Will let you know if I hear anything else. Please pass this information on to anyone who is interested!

I think on top of the probation we should cut their one leg off, and put them is a hole with maggots and no food or water.

Sorry for sounding so angry but I will NEVER understand how one can do these things to animals or humans for that matter!

I am glad they were found guilty and I pray for the dogs.

The thing that scares me about the case is that the woman who owned Dutchess is a school teacher. Would you want some one like her responsible for your children or molding their minds?

At least Dutchess is at rest. She will be waiting for her rescuers at the bridge.

Thanks, Jen. Regardless, of who is right and who is wrong, if this mess is publicized it is going to give rescue a bad name. In addition, I suspect it will make others think twice before stepping into a situation where an animal does need to be saved. Not good, not good in any respect.
Roxane

Penny's Aunt
10-09-2000, 10:54 AM
I don't know that this mess will really negatively affect the rescue people who KNOW they are doing right. It may just have the opposite effect. But it MAY weed out the ones that are in it just for the "glory", which may be for the best anyway.

And those that sit & watch bad things happen & refuse to do anything about it aren't going to change either. They're so frightened of invisible boogeymen that they are incapacitated, & therefore, useless. Unfortunately, there are so many of these people that they can make you just want to go after them with a baseball bat with a spike through the end from frustration. These are the people who want their thinking done for them, their income made for them, & their noses wiped for them, as well as having their children raised for them. The lilies of the field...

Laws are only as good as the people who insist they be obeyed. I've reached the point where vigilante justice seems to be the only thing that is effective.

Would I steal a dog or cat? Oh, my, YES! Been there, done that! Getting meaner & putting up with less every day!

Here is an update on Duchess that I just got sent

REMEMBER DUCHESS the Dalmatian who was grossly neglected to the point of
having her leg fall off and, later, death? According to a news report, her
"owners" are trying to appeal the animal cruelty ruling against them. Don't
let this poor girl die in vain. It is important that this decision remain
upheld so that her tormentors will be unable to simply acquire another dog
and subject him or her to the same cruel treatment. Please, take a moment
to write to:
North Carolina Court of Appeals, Clerk's Office, P.O. Box 2779, Raleigh, NC
27602 Fax: 919-733-8003
