Hi Folks

Time for a new thread. Queenie is going back in the am to the vets. Her eyes are running again, and she is sneezing again. The coughing has increased as well.

This is killing me, she seemed so much better. The last couple of days she has declined some. My husband and I noticed this morning that she was sneezing and coughing quite a bit.

So back on the coaster again. The vet is going to do another xray to see what her lungs look like.

Keep those rays coming though. She is still playing with her chewy, and knocked one of my guys over to get to me last night, so the spunk is still there. She is getting very pocessive.

Keep all paws crossed that this xray comes back good.

Morning,

Queenie is at the vets. She had her fan club greet her when I brought her in. They are sp good to her.

They are doing another set of xrays today, and hopefully, by the time I get home, they will know what is going on.

She was funny, I had to stop and get gas, and I went in and paid. Her eyes were like saucers and all you saw was this little face stuck into the window.

The woman who works at the gas station thought she was adorable. So, I of course had to tell her the whole puppymill thing.

The whole time Queenie was watching me. This is a small town gas station, and my car was about 7 feet from the door.

I get back in the car and she stayed on my lap to the vets.

I am just hoping that we have some good news today.

Oh jeez, guys, I need some help! Queenie still hasn't been spayed because of the pneumonia. I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but what do I do if she goes into heat, never been through that before?

Andrea

What a cute story about the gas station!

Sending rays to Queenie. I hope that her x rays come back good today.

Queenie MAY not come into heat for several months for two reasons: all the physical stress she's been going through, & dogs often don't come into heat in winter (bad time for puppies). She may even wait until Feb or March.

But if she DOES, just some bitch britches to keep the house clean. Get the kind that take the disposable liners.

And keep her away from the boys.

Penny's Aunt is right. Her season may be delayed because of the stress and the season. If you don't have any intact boys in your house, you won't have any problems. The other girls and neutered boys may act interested and try to mount her but the ol' squirt bottle can help put a stop to that. Take her out on leash or go out with her so none of the neighborhood boys decide to come calling. Get her some britches and panty liners and you will be fine.

Button is going through her first season now and I have 2 intact boys so I am playing musical dogs. Poor Button is too young to realize what all the fuss is about. She wants to play. She looks cute in her little blue jeans though.

Thanks for the advice. All my guys are S/N but I just realized about Queenie. I hope you are right. I am hoping we can get her spayed sometime soon.

They kept her overnight for observation last night. Chest xray still looks better, but it is still there.

I am hoping I can bring her home tonight. She always gets so excited when she comes home. She tries to run around the kitchen. She runs up to the other kids and kisses them.

I'll keep you posted.

Andrea,

Sounds good that the x-rays look better. I suspect it will take a little while longer before she clears up totally. We will keep sending rays and hope that by Christmas all of Queenie's lung problems will be behind her. Then she can build up her strength and face her dental problems in the new year.

I know it has to be quite the emotional roller coaster for you with Queenie being in and out of the vets. The spirit and will to not only survive but to thrive and be just one of the family at your home is an example all of us can learn from.

Best wishes and rays,

Tom and the Boys

I wasn't aware she had tooth problems too. Guess I haven't been paying attention. Until she is well enough to be spayed and have them cleaned you might want to use some nolvadent or cetafresh in her mouth. These are doggie mouth washes that will kill some of the bacteria and keep her teeth from getting worse and aid in preventing abcesses when used with regular brushing. Also if she will chew on one of the rope type toys, that will go a long way toward removing some of the gunk from her teeth.

Dukey's Mom
11-16-2000, 11:02 AM
You can see Queenie's teeth on our website. Her page is the 'Can you help" page.

Her teeth are rotted badly, she will lose most of them. Our site is c2cdr.org

Tom, thanks for all your kindness. I do know, she is getting Turkey on Thanksgiving, and Christmas, she will have her own stocking. Oh my, I am going to need a bigger mantle!

Andrea

There is so much stuff available on the 'net that I'm sure you should be able to find an "EXTEND-A-MANTLE" somewhere.

Queenie had this condition for so long, it would be unlikely to clear up "overnight".

Dachsies only use their teeth on household items (furniture, clothes, $400 glasses, leather shoes, etc). You could rip out every tooth in their head, & they would still swallow their dinner in 1.37 seconds, same as before.

It's just their smile that looks a little funny.

Hi Andrea:
Finally made it to the board to check on The Queen. It still sounds very encouraging.
Out of curiosity, how much trouble does she have eating? And except for the items mentioned by PA (furniture etc. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif) what will she be able to eat once the dental work is done?
Sending more hugs her way,

Hi Folks,

Just got off the phone with my vet. Queenie has permanent damage to her lungs. To the point, that she will always cough when exerted. The pneumonia is better, she still has it, but because her lungs are damaged, she has to fight that much harder to get rid of it. They were unable to see it before because of all the gunk in her lungs previously.

She will have to be prednisone the rest of her life, and it's going to be a long time before we can put her under for her teeth or to be spayed.

On top of everything, they now think she has allergies.

This poor dog. She wants to play so badly, but I am really going to have to watch her. She wants to run, but it sets her off.

I just found out my other foster has cancer, this is not turning into a good day.

Wanted to let you know how the Queen is though. She is coming home tonight, which will make her happy. I think some spoiling is in order.

Hi Andrea,

I was afraid as long as Queenie had the pneumonia that she might have some permanent damage. My dad who is 80 has some scars in his lungs from pheumomia when he was a kid. Being on the prednisone is not the worst thing that could happen. Even with her limitations Queenie is getting to experience a quality of life she has never known. She will continue to be a special needs girl but enjoy the time she has with you. Who knows she may be like some those relatives who everyone has. The ones that everyone expects to die and they just keep on going outliving everyone else.

Sorry to hear about the other rescue. Here is a reference page you might want to check out for information on cancer. http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/cancercure/animalcancerctr.htm If anyone ever has the need and finical resources to make use of the VTH at CSU let me know. I can help make travel or housing arrangements at this end. I could even provide short term housing if you don't mind a sloppy house keeper and a sleeper sofa in the living room. Anyone who takes advantage of this offer has to promise not to describe my housekeeping to the board .

Hi Andrea & Queenie,
You didn't think I was gone, did you? Just a very intense week in many ways but we're ALWAYS thinking about you with love and now - gladness.
Queenie tell your Mom to try not to jump back anywhere near that old emotional roller-coaster. We know that you're progressing very well and according to the best possible expectations. So you can't run for 10 minutes, then you trot for 5, OK? Not so different. You're going to have a long and beautiful life.

Andrea, Georgette is so right! No surprise that she has some permanent lung damage--but the thing is, her lungs are now clear enough that it can be SEEN! This is good news. So she won't be able to run in the Wienerdog Wienernationals. Big deal! Amy's Owen has that wrapped up anyway. And if she has to be on prednisone for life, she will be VERY happy, AND any allergies she has won't bother her very much. I really feel she has turned a big corner and is on her way!

I'm very sorry to hear about your other rescue, though. Geez, Andrea. You sure have been through the wringer. I think you're due for a few months of nothing more strenuous than doing a home check or two.

You guys are so wonderful! I don't know what I would do without you.

I talked with the vet at length last night. Queenie, as you say, will always be a special needs girl. The pneumonia is better, but lingering, but as you say, the xray was much clearer. She has to go back in a week for another xray.

I brought her home and let her out to do her business. Guys, she ran like crazy, and I let her, I wish you could see her, it's like she is grinning. I stopped her, settled her down, and fed everyone. I know I shouldn't have let her run, but she just loves it. I promise to try to keep her quiet.

Meena, geez, I don't know. Now I can't adopt her out. The vet said it is like a woman with breast cancer, did we get it all, time will tell. She is so sweet. She loves to play ball, and will toss it and catch it herself. I hope she is going to be ok. I have to do breast exams on her. She follows me everywhere, and howls when you ask where her ball is. This was something I had not expected.

Then we had a 3rd little guy at my vets, 12 year old, severe heart murmur, horrible teeth, and some sort of mass in his abdomen. His name is junior and his owner died. He is adorable! He's a sweet sweet little man

Rough night with the pups.

Tom, I am going to check out that link, and you are a sweetheart! I promise, if we ever take you up on your offer,we won't even look at the house!

I am so glad to hear the news that her xrays were clearer that is wonderful. I agree with everyone else, that the fact that she is alive is amazing and if she can't run marathons, then that is just fine because she has come so far.

I am really sorry to hear about your foster with cancer. I am hoping that everything turns out OK.

Bless you so much for all that you do. Rescue is such an emotional roller coster because you see the best in people (everyone who rescues) and the worst in people. Give Queenie a kiss from Betty.

Hi Folks!

Wanted to give you an update. She is holding her own. She has permanent damage to her lungs. She cannot be allowed to run, which is next to impossible at my house. Vet wants her leash walked only. She will always cough because of the damage. She is still getting up gunk, and I guess she will for a while. We're going on 3 months now.

We are getting ready for Thanksgiving and the Queen will have her own plate, not that she needs it, with the belly she is sporting!

I think because she has been so inactive, she is piling on the pounds. Right now, thats the least of my worries.

Her eyes are still running and she is still sneezing, but the vet said she will for a while.

So, really no change, except she is a porky girl! When I think back to a few weeks ago, I can live with that.

Was it warm, warm, warm, and did she get lots of snuggles and kisses?
Did she play?
Did she get her share of admiration and compliments?
Did she doze on someone's lap and sleep in your bed?
As it should be.

Hi Folks,

Sorry to keep you waiting. We have a new Queenie saga. As of last Wednesday, I noticed that Queenie looked really huge, then by Friday am, she was so distended I called the vet.

I brought her in, and an xray showed that she was cram packed with food. The problem was, it wasn't passing through. They walked her all day trying to get her to pass it, no luck. They think she may have some sort of blockage. They are doing side views to see if they can spot anything. This poor girl!

She has been there since Friday, and I am waiting to hear about her. I'm concerned because I have actually cut back on feeding because my guys are not as active now because it's cold.

This poor girl just cannot handle anything else.

Send those rays guys, I am panicking everytime my phone rings in my office.

Hi Again!

I must first say, you are all the most dear and kindest friends, I will ever have, and I hope you all know how much I truly mean that, I would never have survived the Queenie saga without you all. Of course, that continues.

It seems Queenie has faked us all! I saw her xrays today, I was shocked!

It seems the Queen had a severe case of overindulgence and gas!

Me thinks some guests at Thanksgiving dinner gave her a few too many tidbits!

I made up special holiday plates for all my kids, ok, don't beat me up here!

It seems someone added to the Queen's fare!
I saw the xray when she went in Friday am. It showed a belly filled to the gills with food!

They walked her and then she was filled with..ummm...poop!

Anyway, our Queen, gorged herself, unbenoist to me! I am so happy to know that our Queen has just gained an appetite!

This dog will never cease to amaze me, or us!
Anyway, the Queen is home tonight, and chewing on a rawhide, which I have no idea how she even can! Especially with her mouth.

She has to mean something. She has to be here for a reason, she has come so far, and shouldn't even be here.

Perhaps she wouldn't if she didn't have all of you pulling for her.

So, she still has her original issues, but, now we know our Queen is a piglet! Can you even believe this????

Ok, the piglet and I are going to sleep now, have a wonderful night.

BTW....Dottie is anxious to get back to her DWD ways, she is very upset at not posting!

Andrea, sorry, but I can't help but laugh! I'm just relieved it's nothing serious! May I ask, did she not poop for a couple days or so? Maybe you just didn't notice? So, did the Vet give her anything to "clean her out"? I would think they would, but maybe not. Do they give enemas to dogs? Queenie was sent to you for a reason.

Many people go through their lives without any life altering experiences, or even a reason to think about life in general. Queenie was a gift, and even though it feels it may have felt like a rotten one the past months, undoubtedly a gift of life. You have been given a great gift-I am sure your whole view on life, love, and the people around you has changed.

So glad to hear Queenie was just stuffed.

Hi Folks,

Queenie is staying the same for once, and seems to be improving. She got pretty winded yesterday, but she was trying to play outside.

Coughing is better, and her eyes look better too. She has a new trick, she is hoarding toys and chewies. I was cleaning Saturday and we keep a comforter under our bed for whomever wants to sleep there. Well, I went to wash the comforter and there was a pile of toys under the bed. I saw her yesterday going upstairs, toy in mouth and went right under the bed. She is stock piling!

She just continues to amaze me. The only really weird thing is, in 3 months, I have never heard her bark, not once. Even when all the others are.

Does anyone have any experience with the mill dogs, and not barking?

Anyway, she is a little fighter, and hanging in there.

Thanks for all the rays, I think they are making the difference!

Andrea

Hi Andrea,

My Aggie who was a mill rescue almost never spoke. The only time I heard her voice for the first six months or so after I got her was if something really upset her and then she would not bark or cry if I was where she could see me. Eventually she would start to let out a little yip if she cut in front of me while we were out walking and she accidently got kicked. In our last few months (I lost her after 23 months to complications following emergency back surgery) she had started on race occasions yo use her voice if front of me. When she had her disk problems the doctors had to monitor her heart and pupil response to try and determine if she was in pain. Everyone at the VTH described her as a stoic little girl never once letting out a whimper to say she was hurting.

I know there were other dogs who HUA got our of the same mill at the same time who were also quite when they first got to their new homes. One of Aggie's mill mates lives here and was adopted into a home with two or three other dachshunds and learned to bark from the others but I understand it took her about three months to start talking. I wonder if the people at the mill turned a hose on the animals if they dared to speak.

May you and your family have a great Christmas. Watch out Queenie will be hoarding the presents under your bed.

Best Wishes,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

Hi Andrea:
Encouraging news; the Queen is still getting better. Would love to have her teach Greta and Baylea how to be quiet! They have a complete vocabulary of sounds for each and every situation. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif
Hugs for Queenie,

OK, Andrea, let's see... The Queen has apparently been giving dinner guests The L@@K in order to obtain forbidden food. She ate it all and was full of gas. Now she is hoarding toys under the bed.

HellllllOOOOOOO!! I would say this little girl has turned the corner and is tearing down the block! Sounds like your totally typical dachsie to me!

I have such clear images of her from your wonderful posts--wish you lived around the corner so I could actually SEE her. I'm sure we all feel the same. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Someone on the DRNA board posted this message. I think it applies to Queenie:

Subject: Anyone Recognize These Traits? 1. If I like it, it's mine
2. If it's in my mouth, it's mine
3. If I can take if from you, it's mine
4. If I had it a little while ago, it's mine
5. If it's mine, it must never appear to be yours in any way
6. If I'm chewin something, all the pieces are mine
7. If it looks like mine, it's mine
8. If I saw if it first, it's mine
9. If you are playing with something and you put it down, it automatically becomes mine

I think if there is one dog who long overdue on hoarding a few toys, I think it's Queenie. She's finally got a good life, and she's going to stash every little piece away of it that she can. You go girl!

Just making a quick post to bring this thread backup up on the list. There was a hiccup on the server this morning that resulted in all postings since December 5 to be lost.

Andrea we all hope that your dad is continuing to make good progress with his recovery by bypass surgery. We also hope that Queenie will once again prove be a miracle dachsie and pull through her latest set back.

Best wishes, rays and prayers,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)
