How do you tell a neighbor their dog barks and howls all night. My next door neighbors had two dogs, a pitmix and a rotti. Well the pitmix keep trying to get through the fence at us and we were afraid with all my kids that he could hurt someone so I talked to the neighbors and they agreed to move him to a relatives home. Well now their rotti barks and howls all night long. Not only is he extremely loud but my kids are both sleepwalking because they hear him and become scared. I haven't slept an entire night this week. My neighbors are rarely home and Iam not even sure if they are sleeping here or someplace else. They have a teenage daughter I see ocasionally but she's no use. Iam almost ready to call animal control about it but I don't want to be a bitchy neighbor. It's so hot now we have to open all our windows at night to keep cool enough to sleep (no ac here). Does anyone have any ideas what to do?

WOW, what a familar story to me.

I had the same problem with my neighbor. She has two huge akita's who bark from the minute she lets them out until they go back inside. When we first moved in it was really a problem. My husband and I spoke with her on numerous (5) occasions and she would bring them in earlier in the evening(11pm)for a while but then she would start letting them out again until all hours.

So......we finally called our local Animal Control. I put it off for a few months because she was always very nice when we did speak with her. She would say, "I'm sorry, I don't even hear them, I am so used to it". She wasn't doing anything about it. They came out and fined her ($100) and also checked her yard to see if it was safe (the fencing) and checked both of the dog's vaccination records.

That was appx. 6 months ago and it has been 75% better. She brings them in before 9pm now. Thank goodness since both my husband and I wake up at 5am for work.

I have spoken with her since, and she did take it rather well. I quess she realized it wasn't fair to the neighbors. I hope that your neighbor will be just as thoughtful. Sometimes it takes an outside party to make people take notice. I'm now getting a good night's sleep! Good luck!!

Good suggestion Nisehart!

I agree totally. I had the same problem with a neighbor who would leave thier poor husky outside almost all the time. It constantly howled when it got tangled up on its run. I finally called the police and now they are much more attentive to the dog and its needs.

Every once in a while, some people need a little "wake-up" call.

Good luck. Willi and I send you lots of doxie z-z-z-z-z-z's http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/sleep.gif

Unfortunately, they always seem to need that wake-up call from someone in authority!

Years ago, one of my sister's friends had a dog that barked all night. The man worked nights, so he didn't care. Nothing they said made any difference. They knew he hated Hispanic music, so they recorded 8 hours of it, set the recorder in the window facing his house, & turned it on full-blast just before they left for work.

He put the dog indoors after that, & the barking stopped.

My question is, why does it have to come to that?

Thank you all for the great advice. I finally did talk to the daughter a few nights ago. No one has been staying at that house for quite awhile. After I told her of the problem they took the dog with them at night. And then today a moving van showed up http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gif now I guess the problems moved to another neighborhood. Since that house is a rental in poor shape I hope it sits empty for a long time.
