Hi, honey--a little more information, please? I'm guessing from your message that the dog has to stay in your room when no one is home, or when you're not home, right? And does the doggie have accidents while you're at school or otherwise out? Is that what you mean? Does Bach have accidents every time you're gone? Is he or she better behaved when you're there? How often does the doggie go for walks?
Please provide a little more info so we can offer some advice. And yes, little dogs CAN be trained to use a litter box!
Well, this is a tough situation!

Dont take this the wrong way but if your mom has such a problem with the puppy and u are living under her roof why do u have the puppy... Its a big responsibilty to have a dog that must be discussed by ALL members of the family is it fair to have a pup that your mom doesnt want? How can the little pup feel wanted? Im sure u mean well but did u think about this stuff before u got him?? Just my opinion ... Im sure their is a way to litter train the puppy while u are away, but in the long run i dont think that will solve the problem... maybe if u talk to your mom about this u guys could work something out http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Hi!
I remember reading about your problem on the Dachshund Zone. Wasn't the problem that you were in school all day and the dachsie had to stay in your room because your mom didn't want it anywhere else(any time) ?
You wanted help by asking if you were giving it enough exercise by taking it to the school yard every day for a while...
I didn't answer you at the time b/c I'd hoped you'd gotten some ideas! Well, I agree with Jen- Your Mama must be in on the puppy training and dachsie love thing or it's a no go...
Besides, to properly housebreak a dachsie you need the whole family's help. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
Dachsies need freedom to grow and play ,one bedroom isn't enough world for them. Win mom over!

Don't give up hope yet! There are lots of folks out there with very happy crate-trained dachsies. I really do understand where you are coming from... when I was 16, a friend gave me a registered dachshund for my birthday. My mother absolutely threw a fit! She did not want a puppy in the house messing everywhere while I was at school and made me totally responsible for her... I did the litterbox training and it worked beautifully (except for the litter all over the place!!)
When she was still very small, I used a very large box that she could not get out of and put her bed on one end and a shallow (about 1 inch tall) litter box on the other end. But, as soon as I got home, I did take her outside so that she would be familiar with going both places. She caught on very quickly (thank goodness) but not all dachsies do... it takes time and patience.
Now that I am more familiar with crate training (thanks to a couple of rescue puppers) I would recommend you give it a try. Most pet owners who use crates are gone at least 8 hours a day... if you are in school this method may just work for you.
BUT, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU GET THE INFO ON HOW TO PROPERLY CRATE TRAIN!!! You don't want little Bach to think the crate is his punishment... it should be his safe haven until you get back home to take him out for a nice long walk and then lots, lots, lots of attention.
Is there someone here more knowledgable about the crate method that can help out on the crate training instructions for puppies?

The Purina company just came out with a litterbox and housetraining system just for dogs. It's called secondnature, and you can call them toll-free at 1-800-7PURINA (800-778-7462). They also have a website: www.doglitter.com. (http://www.doglitter.com.) There's an advertisement and coupon for secondnature in the August issue of Dog Fancy magazine, which you can buy at many bookstores, newstands, and drugstores.
However, I would recommend you crate-train Bach, if you can. How old is he/she? Have you taken him to the vet for a check-up and shots? This is very important too, and you will probably need your mom's cooperation for this. The vet can give you advice on crate or litterbox training.
One reason why I recommend crate-training is that Bach will be safe in his crate while no one is watching him during the day. Puppies and young dogs can get into all kinds of trouble when they are left alone. They can get very sick, or even die, from chewing on electrical cords or eating a sock. You have to be as careful with Bach as you would be with a baby, so you have taken on a big responsibility, and you really should have some help from your mom.
Please give us some more information about Bach's age, whether he's been to the vet, etc., so we can try to help you.
