I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I was wondering if anyone is going to be at the Dachshund specialty show in Portland, OR on Jan 19th? I live in Seattle but I am going to be there for sure :)
Also, is it OK to take pictures at dog shows? I've always brought my camera along and then been to afraid to take it out cuz I'm never sure if people really want you taking pictures if you don't know their dog. Haha
What about video cameras?

I think this will be an excellent thing for you to do. It should be fun. Keep in mind that during confirmation, the handlers and owners can seem rude and standoffish. They are not really like that...they are just really focused and have spent hours and hours grooming their dog for the few min. they are in the ring. That is an expensive few min. and they are all trying to make the most of it. If you want to take pictures, ask the event secertary. Offer to give her copies of the negatives or a link to the pictures on the web so she(he) can download them (if you do not mind). They would likely love this. They may request no flashes or anything else that might distract a dog. IF they are having an agility match, or rally...go to that!!! The handlers are much more fun. Remember to ask before you pet someones dog. If they have just been groomed they might not want it or they may just want to be careful of passing a sickness on your hand from one dog to another. Honestly, though, I have never had anyone refuse. Most of the folks I have met from the Northwest are very cool. If you want to find out in advance about camera or video, locate the premium for the show and it will have contact information for the sec. IF you cannot find this, let me know and I will get the contact info. for you. I am not going to be there but I do have enough connections that I can get that information to you.
This is the absolute best place to meet a reputable breeder, btw!

Thanks so much for the info, you are very helpful!!
I know what you mean about the handlers in conformation. I used to show my dog in 4-H and I totally know the feeling right before you show!
Thanks for offering to help in finding contact info. The AKC website has the Superintendent's number on it; is that the right number to call to ask about pictures?
I know, I am excited to be around a bunch of serious Dachshund people! What do you think is a good way to ask if they ever have puppies available?

That's where I got my lead on the breeder I got my baby from.
I went to the show and bought a catalog (the entrant's names are listed in the back with addresses). As I watched the show I looked for dogs i 'liked' and marked them. Were they happy, did they wag their tails? Were they the size and coat type I thought I wanted? Was the owner / breeder / handler doing confirmation and obeidence?
I found the name of someone that fit my criterion and sent her a letter telling her how I got her name. I introduced myself in the letter including telling her about my lifestyle - hours worked, fenced yard, history with dogs living until at least 14 years old etc - saying I was looking at adding a Dachshund to my household...if she had pups or knew where I could find pups would she contact me?
I got a call a few days later and we talked a bit, I guess after I passed muster because she asked if I wanted to come to her home and visit her current litter. Of course I did and my baby Sadie picked me out that day.
Several times since we've been somewhere and shes introduced me telling that story. I think she was very pleased that I'd done that much research when choosing a dog. I suspect as long as you don't approach someone at a 'critical' moment during the show most there would be happy to find a good potential dachshund hoomom.

Have a great time. If you do take pictures though... Absolutely NO flashes. Being an agility competitor myself... it is a real distraction and some dogs do not like cameras at all if they see you pointing it at them.

The superintendent most likely will not have any idea. The show chairman is Delores Belden. I am sending you a PM with her phone number...although it is public on www.gpdc.net Call her about photos and video
As far as approaching them looking for a puppy. I think just ask (after they have shown-but you sound like you know this)...or before hand, contact

I might attend. I enjoy attending on the all-breed days and catching the agility competition as well. I have shown a couple of my dachshunds at some smaller shows in the area, but have never had the courage to enter the larger ones. I do love to attend though and have met many show breeders in this area. The shows and the friendships I've gained have taught me so much about true conformation, to the point that I probably see faults even where it might not really be one! LOL! It is a challenge to try and choose which dachshund I think is the best in conformation and see if the judge chooses the same one.
As for pictures, I have taken them in the past. My camera does well without flash. I have a friend who has been showing and breeding dachshunds for many years, and she really appreciates having a few pictures of her best show prospect and herself in the ring.

Frequently outside the ring I'm asked if someone can take a picture of my dog. I have yet to refuse :) I wouldn't take ringside pictures (of the dogs IN the ring) as it is true, some dogs can focus on your activities more than what is going on in the ring once they see a camera. It's amazing what dogs can focus on. If you are interested in a dog/breeder that you see in the ring or outside, ask them if you can come by their *set-up* and talk to them about their dogs and then ask them WHERE that is <G>
