Jen, this link was posted some time ago and created quite a little stir--arguments over which was worse, Petco or PETA, and whether any of the allegations were true.

I don't know. What I DO know is that PETLAND is a store worth boycotting. (And please, don't anyone lecture me on bulletin board slander!) PETLAND sells puppies from mills, along with all their fish and pet supplies. If any of our newer members are not familiar with this chain and its evils, feel free to e-mail me and I'll be glad to fill you in. PETA is calling for a nationwide boycott of PETLAND stores, and whatever anyone thinks of PETA, I think this is a cause we can all get behind!

No need to apologize, Jen! You weren't around when this topic hit before! Petco is another big chain, like Petsmart. In Chicago, we have both. Petco came in first and bought up all the little local chain stores. I have one near me; it used to be a really nice store and it no longer is. I think the main thing they did was lower the salaries of their employees. Overnight, all of the helpful, knowledgeable, friendly folks who worked in the store before Petco bought it disappeared, and they were replaced by a lot of people who know nothing about animals, chat with their coworkers instead of ringing you up when there are 10 people on line, and are just generally not very helpful. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if some of these people mistreated the animals they sell, out of ignorance, but I'm horrified to think that it would be corporate policy. Unfortunately, PETA has been responsible for some very rash actions--like going to dog shows and letting dogs out of their crates, "freeing" them http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/silly.gif -- so they don't have a lot of credibility when they make allegations like this.

I don't shop there any more except in "emergencies," when I've run out of biscuits or some other necessity and I don't have time to drive to the independent store where I buy my Inova.

Here's Peta's latest quote....

"Let us allow the dog to disappear from our brick and concrete jungles...from our firesides...from the leather nooses and chains by which we enslave it!"
John Bryant...PETA...People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

Now, does this sound like a rational group? I think there are some members who have NO idea what the true agenda of this group is... and when they protest something like Petco, they play really dirty!!

I guess we just have to consider the source. Jen, don't take this personally, you didn't do anything wrong by posting the link... It's just time to expose PETA for what they really are... An extremist organization.

Did anyone see the PETA demonstration against the rat extermination in NY. Perhaps the demonstrators would like to foster the rat surplus in their homes.....

Made me giggle just thinking about it.....

Seriously, that is a little extreme.

I dont really know alot about PETA i just know a few years back they caused a big stink about the fur coat thing ... and it was all over the news for awhile ... they do seem extreme i just wondered if their was any truth to the Petco thing... i hadnt even really heard of the store. I LOVE petsmart though... im heading there now matter of fact Cactus and BuhBuh are beginning to have some success with Operation Big Nasty Play Pen ... think they might tip it over here soon they can raise it off the floor...ekkkkk these doggies are too smart for their own good.... im just gonna get a couple of those great dane size crates and put 4 in each... *sigh* wonder how they will escape that... im returning the big nasty play pen i havent had it a week and they are almost out... whats a doxie mom to do?!? Jen,
You can save money by ordering through J & B Pet Wholesale. Here's the link http://www.jbpet.com/new_frames.html I think a large wire crate would probably be a great idea for your escape artists!! I've put Owen in Ruby's crate (Boxer) and he had tons of room and he's no little dachshund. If the ex-pen doesn't stay safe at my house, I'm sure I'll move onto a large wire crate.

good luck!
