Does anyones puppers get so exited when you come home they start doing pee all over?

Bailey does this. When my hubby or I come home Bailey is so exited he starts "squirting" everywherehttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/oogle.gif

I have to rush him outside but it is usually too late.

He seems to do it more with my hubby then me. Then again I am never out too long and my husband is at work all day.

Lets just say that my hubbys' shoes are getting a little wet these dayshttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/blah.gif

Chaucer's a leaky little boy (the real name is "submissive urination", but I think "leaky little boy" is much cuter). He was DREADFUL in this regard when he was a little pup, but as he's grown older (and gotten the big snip) it's slowing down quite a bit.

Age does tend to slow down submissive urination. From what our vet tells us, it is a physical, not behavioral "problem", so the best you can do it try and ignore the dog when you first come home until he calms down.

This, I realize is very hard to do with a wiggly little dachshund pup (we pretty much found it a practical impossiblity....as even if we left him in the crate a bit longer he wouldn't calm down until he got let out anyway.)

Chaucer is pretty good with mommy and daddy now, but most of our guests don't fare quite as well cuz he's still very excited about new people, and NO ONE (no matter how we advise them otherwise) can seem to ignore him until he calms down.

Apparently, some dogs outgrow it all together, and some outgrow it to varying degrees, and some always do it. We'll see when Chaucer's a year or two...but it's MUCH better than it was when he was a baby (at which time my husband used to call him "old faithful" since everyime you screatched his belly...he'd pee, straight up....*laughs*)

Ah...
Nostalgia over those cute puppy days. Wotan used to flip over and give mom the wee~wee squirt whenever he first saw her. Frank used to squeal and run for the sink if he got "hit".

It seemed to help if we came in bearing a toy or a treat to distract him a bit from posturing. As he got older this flip-n-pee routine got less and less and now at 2 and a half yrs he hasn't squirted for at least a year...

Good luck and hope the furkid grows out of this phase.

I had a conversation about this somewhere on another board, and can't remember where at the moment, if I remember I will cross post.

Anyway, as OBS pointed out, it is submissive Peeing, and your dog is 'saying' to you, 'I submit to you'. Ignoring the dog will help, but as you pointed out, it is difficult. I would suggest that if he does it, totally ignore him. Do not clean it up in front of him, wait until he can't see you. I tried this once with beanie and the problem got better immeadiately. I must say though that he never stop, dropped, rolled, and squirted.

I will try to find the link and post it.

Rudy used to sprinkle but with him I dont think it was submissive urination. He would only do it when we came home and he had been confined to his crate or x-pen. He never did it when one of us came home, but the other had already been there, or when a guest arrived. In this case I think the problem was his bladder was just VERY full and he was SOOOOO happy to see us. It never happened when we were gone for short periods of time, just longer.

It still happens occaisionally when somebody works over and doen't get home at the usual time to let him out.

My point is that if this is the problem -ignoring doesn't really work. The only reason the sprinlkler lets loose is because they REALLY gotta GO! I just swooped him up very quickly and carried him outside -then he would run to the grass let it go and come back to give me hello kisses.

Has anyone noticed all the dogs spoken about here are male? Could that have something to do with it? I had a male doxie and he had the same problem if we petted him before we took him out. As long as he went out before we touched him he was fine. I now have a female and I don't have that problem with her. The only place she does leak is at the vet's office and they know that she is gonna get them . Anyway, I just noticed the male/female thing and wondered about it.

Maybe this is the exception that proves the rule, but Peaches did submissive urination until she was TWO!!! Also, my friend's Doberman, Sheba, did it for years and years, especially when I'd show up at the house with my 15-pound dachshund, who seemed to delight in terrorizing the Big Girl.

With Peaches, it was clearly excitement--she would dribble and/or just let go completely, depending on how full her bladder was, whenever anyone addressed her in a high-pitched, happy voice or swooped down to pet or scratch her. I got into the habit of simply snapping her leash on her when I got home and trotting her out the door, where I could then greet her and be guaranteed an instant voiding!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

She did outgrow it and now, at age 12, has a bladder of iron. Peaches NEVER has accidents! So you have something to look forward to down the road!

Not to upset your theory, but my youngest girl had the same problem as a puppy. She just got so excited, you had to take her outside to great her. When she was spayed, it got worse for a while (spay incontenancy, but she eventually grew out of it. I think she was about 7 months old when she could great you without a leak. It is just puppy excitement!

Hannah is an 11 month old female. She is a submissive urinator. She goes to doggy daycare five days aweek and the staff there
said that she is improving because she is becoming more use to people and movement. The owner, who also trains dogs, told me never to scold Hannah that she couldn't help it. They do bring Hannah outside the door to meet me though when I pick her up every afternoon. Hopefully one day she will greet me with only wet kisses!

Oh well, it was just a theory since everyone who had posted had a male dog. I tried--I am clearly not as experienced a dog owner as most of you out there but I will learn.

Actually, that wasn't a bad theory! I had to do some memory searching to remember when Sadie Mae was little. She puddle~piddled too.

I think it's just easier to get wet when the boys do it b/c their equiptment is in The Position!

Low-key comings & goings on your (& your family members') part not only cuts down on submissive urination, but also doesn't point out how great the difference is to have you home, & how lonely it is when you're gone. Sometimes that difference is the reason for a lot of the barking & howling when your're gone.

Wheeler does the roll over and pee thing too but mostly for my mother. It does seem to be worse when he has been confined for a long period and really has to go. Joy Becker, a dachsie fancier and very talented sculptor, does beautiful and very expensive dachsie bronzes. I have joked about having her do a life sized Wheeler plumbed as a fountain when I win the lotto.

Keeping comings and goings low key does help, as Penny's Aunt said. I always let my dogs out before we get into any real greeting. Our routine is they are let out, I change from my work clothes then they come in and we have "puppy love" time.

Our rescued dachsie Gaudi is a "wet one" too. The first few months after we got him he was especially that way...not to anyone but only to us (not guests). He never rolls over. Mostly (like 98% of the time) when he does this it's with my husband. For months Joe was angry because of this and kept saying he wanted to give Gaudi to someone else because he would dampen the hallway when Joe came home. I read about submissive urination and Joe tried ignoring him and that did seem to work. But as people say it's hard to ignore a leaping, running, yiping dachsie..so now Joe always greets Gaudi outside and gives him the "magic touch" (as we call it)and he lets out a few drops or so. By turning it into a "magic touch" and greeting him outside Joe doesn't mind that Gaudi does this. BTW here is a photo of what Gaudi looks like.

BTW he has a small web page which mostly talks of how we happened to adopt him and shows the flyer listing him that we spotted outside a post office.
