View Full Version : A Virus warning

I got this from a network person at school. They really keep on top of viruses floating around and even let us know which warnings are frauds. I just thought I'd pass it. I guess Microsoft email software users should be extra cautious with this one.
**********
ome of you might be aware that there is another email virus sweeping the internet today. The message usually has a subject of ILOVEYOU and includes an attachment that the sender wants you to open. The text of the message might say something like:
kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me.
The virus reportedly sends itself to everyone in the recipient's address book as well as modifying files on the recipient's computer. Based on the nature of the virus and past experience, it would most likely not replicate itself in our network because we are not using a Microsoft-based email system. But it is doing damage to files on computers. If you receive one of these messages do not open it. Immediately delete it from your In Box.

Our computer guru just called us to warn us about the virus. Every one of his big clients has a fried server, thanks to this nasty bug.
As Jeff has always warned us, NEVER open ANY attachment on an e-mail if you are not expecting to get an attachment from the person whose name is displayed as the sender. And never EVER open one from someone you don't know!!! I can't tell you how many unread jokes I've deleted!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/lol.gif Better safe than fried!

I figure the only one who would be sending me love letters is Pluto - but since he doesn't have access to e-mail..... http://dachsie.org/ubb/blushie.gif

All of our computers here at Darton were affected. They just came back up an hour ago. I had 57 I love you messages to delete! I was feeling pretty popular until I found out it was a virus!

Oh my goodness, only 57 messages? Yes, our business got hit too. When they tried to re-boot my PC this morning, it set off the virus from my PC. So far, at last count, I've got at LEAST 10,000 e-mails to delete! I work for a division of Time Warner and it sent out the virus to EVERY PERSON in our global address book.
I had this dope call me from one of the areas in our plant and he asked me why I sent him a "love" e-mail. He actually thought I sent a love letter to a complete stranger! I told him that it was the virus he heard about all day through the intercom and paging service we have at work. I think he was a little disappointed because he then said "Oh...well ok then" and then he hung up.
Maybe I should have someone walk me out to my car tonight. Very Scary! http://dachsie.org/ubb/sick.gif
In case I haven't said it in the last 5 minutes, I really hate being a computer programmer!
I hope to catch up on everyone's posts tomorrow. See ya'll then!

While on the subject of the ILOVEYOU virus, there is a new variant out - the subject has been changed to "fwd: Joke", and there is no message body. The attachment has been renamed to "Very_Funny.vbs", and still does the same as the original script.
We got hit with it at work - 20 employees received it before we could get the defenses up, but out of those only 1 person actually opened the virus - and it was ineffective, since their computer was running Windows NT, with "Windows Scripting Host" disabled. We haven't counted how many instances of the virus were deflected by the anti-virus system.
Hope all paws will steer clear of that nasty piece of poop http://dachsie.org/ubb/smile.gif

We got a warning about the new variant worm too. Listen up, you guys--as I'm sure Mickamack will verify, the computer gurus know what they're talking about when they tell us never to open an unexpected attachment. Just don't do it!!! There's no joke in the world that's worth the kind of disaster these bugs/worms can produce. You can't be infected unless you open the attachment. Just DELETE!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/dorky.gif
Don't y'all ever wonder what goes on in the minds of the people who create these things? It must take a tremendous amount of work to create one. And in return, you get what--the thrill of screwing up computers worldwide? Geez, get a LIFE, already!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/blah.gif
ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!
Just heard about the latest variant on NPR: The worm creators are now sending a mutant worm as a confirmation of a Mother's Day gift. http://dachsie.org/ubb/mutant.gif Be careful out there!

Well, I actually got a copy of the virus code and the very first line of the code was a remarks which said "I hate to go to school" So, my guess is that it was probably one or a group of KIDS who wrote this virus. Can you imagine? Our networking guys were saying how clever and well written this virus was, and a CHILD probably wrote it.
As I came in this morning, I had to revise my count of items in my e-mail. In my inbox I had 3400 messages. Those were only the ones that had been returned undeliverable to me. I then went into my sent items and I had about 16,000 messages that I sent out yesterday. So, I guess in total I have about 20,000 items in activity yesterday!!!
I felt awful tired when I got home last night and now I know why. It looks like I worked REALLY hard yesterday! http://dachsie.org/ubb/wink.gif
