Frankie and Oscar, but mostly Frankie have been little brats up until now. When I've been feeling low, they've made it worse. Frankie 'puff barks' when I'm trying to sleep, Oscar wants up, wants down, wants up... They play fight loudly, spill their water all over the kitchen (and will me to step in it, then laugh maliciously when I do), bark at everything, drop bones down the stairs, disregard my commands, and are generally not the tear-licking, cuddling wieners that some of you write about. Not wild or bad, just annoying.

Yesterday I had the worst day ever.** I was weepy all evening. The boys were WONDERFUL. They behaved perfectly. Oscar cuddled for hours, Frankie wandered over once in a while and gave me a genuine kiss (not a taste)and what I take to be a hug, and they didn't act up at all. They both did their business right away when I let them out and came in when I called. They were quiet and calm. Oscar slept on my shoulder with his face on my neck. Frankie slept right by my side.

My last dogs understood my feelings and I was disappointed/hurt that F & O didn't. Maybe they just needed to mature.

My world can crumble around me but I can handle anything as long as I have two healthy happy wieners who love me.

Susan, I'm really sorry that you had just a horrible day. So often, we only have our furry friends to help us get through a day like that, and I'm thrilled to hear that Frankie and Oscar were able to be there for you.

Susan, it's nice when the world suddenly shifts INTO balance, since it's so often out of whack. Sorry you had such a bad day, but happy to hear that the boys came through for you when you needed it most.

I'm not sure that dachshunds are the most intuitive dogs. As a group, the hounds were developed to work more independently than other breeds--the herders, for example--that were developed to work closely with a human master. I know that Farfel, who is a major cuddler and MUST be touching another living being to be happy, curls up with me mostly because it makes HIM feel good. But over time, he has picked up a sense of my moods, and I can see him adjusting his behavior accordingly when the mood is strong either way. Peaches, on the other hand, is just always Peaches.

But it sounds as if Frankie and Oscar might be growing up! A lot of their annoying behavior can probably be attributed to the fact that they're a little pack of two puppy boys who are real tuned in to each other, rather than you. As they mature, their focus may widen to include you a bit more.

Anyway, I hope you are having a better day today. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smile.gif
