As I was tucking all the dogs into their beds tonight, I started thinking about all the rituals we have with our furkids. Isobel and I have one I really adore. After all the babies are tucked into their crates and before I let the big kids out of their room, Isobel hops into my arms and we hug. Actually, I wrap my arms around her and she rests her head in the crook of my neck . . . and we sway slightly and just kinda hold each other.

That is my favorite ritual of all the ones for all the dogs. When I hold Isobel and she cuddles back, we are bonding and loving each other sooo much. I don't know if I can explain how that makes me feel, but it's like she infuses me with serenity and contentment. For those few minutes nothing else matters. Both of us are so relaxed and happy. It's magical!

Does that sound kinda looney?! It almost sounds like I should be feeling/talking that way about a man in my life. I don't know when she and I started this, but we do it every night and she will grumble and shriek if I forget. Then she sighs when I finally pick her up. She needs it too!

What are your favorite rituals?

That sounds like such a sweet ritual you do with Isobel, Mary. You described it very well...I could imagine seeing you two in my mind.

Every morning when I wake up Ms. Shakti and Gaudi come and sit on my lap in bed and rest their little heads on me and just stare into my eyes with what sure looks like love. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/heart.gif My husband says they do the same when he first wakes up too.As for Wotan...he stays under the covers and licks my toeshttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/blah.gif

I hate to disappoint you, but when a dachsie wakes you up in the morning & stands on your chest to look into your eyes, it's not love... he wants his breakfast!

Penny & my sister Julie do the love-hug thing, too. Julie tells Penny that she is so cute, so beautiful, so precious, so smart, etc. It's really nauseating.

For herself, Penny likes to drag her big blankie from the bedroom into the living room, then push & pull it all around until she's got it arranged just right, preferably right in a doorway. Then she puts her forehead on the blankie & digs like crazy!

And here i was thinking that i was the ONLY one with weird rituals ... All mine sleep in bed with me ... hubby built them a little ramp to get up onto the bed...at night they all stare at me with the L@@K while i get my pjs on. Then when i crawl into bed they start to kinda whine and get restless... until i say (ok dont laugh) "Comeon Momma's Babys time for nite nite" then they all run up the ramp at full speed and fight for their fav. spot in our bed. Sassie usually is the one that snuggles up aganist me from the front then i have Rosie at my back, Winston is also a toe licker she stays near my feet, Buh-Buh sleeps near my hubby ... they are just scattered all over the place ... and some of them snore LOUD!! My schnauzer thinks she is a dachshund too ... we tell her that she is our one and only wirehair so she doesnt feel left out... she sleeps on my hubbys chest ... this will be quiete funny when she gets bigger ...he wont be able to breath. I dunno what i would do without my doggies ... i supose miss Cassie will have to find her a spot in my bed too...lol Someones gonna have to go on a diet if shes gonna fit. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif Jeff (my hubby) jokes and says that when we do have pups around here he will have to go sleep in the doghouse... cuz their wont be room for him in the bed! lol

I do the nite-nite thing too. All my puppers go out for Last Call and when they come in they get a soft snack and then I say: "C'mon, lets go nite-nite". They all either go to their crates (the babies are all crated at night---with lots of comfy blankies, of course) and the big kids jump on the bed and claim their places. They all get tucked in and kissed good night http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/kiss2.gif If I had them all in bed with me . . . .I would not have any room!

But I still love the nite-nite Dachsie hug best!

Okayso since all of you are revealing the silly rituals I will tell mine.

If I want dachsie kisses, I simply have to say "Who's mama's babies??" Their tails start to wag and they wiggle all over. Then I say it again, "WHO'S mama's babies???" Then they come running and kiss me like crazy.

If I snuggle hug them, they lean in even closer and kiss the inside of my ear!!! Rudy kisses the inside of Roscoe's ears too.

After last call, they come in romp around a sec while I turn off the lights and lock the doors. Then I ungate the hallway and say "Bedtime babies!" They run down the hall ane wait at the bedroom door. I open the door and they wait at the foot of the bed to be picked up. I put Rudy up first then Roscoe. They both sniff -maybe a kiss too -my hubby first and then snuggle under the covers. When I get in and settled they snuggle up against me. If they are touching any bare skin, they usually lick me a few times before dosing off.

I LOVE my babies and I LOVE our rituals.

There must be something about goodnight rituals with our babies. As soon as we tell Ginger that it is sleepy-sleepy time, she runs up to our bedroom and waits for us. Some nights she is restless, but as she has matured, most nights she walks up by our face, gives my husband a kiss, me a kiss, and heads straight under the covers. That is our little ritual. We have our own little alarm clock also in Miss Ginger. She makes sure that we are up in time to take her outside and give her breakfast. She'll pop her head out of the covers and begin the day just like she ended it---with lots of kisses!

"Dachshund head smash" is my favorite ritual. I've found that all the dachshunds I've encountered will do this. I hold my face right up to theirs, forehead to forehead and nose to nose, and they'll stay still for as long as I will! I think it's the dachshund equivalent of the Vulcan mind-meld. Annie will push back against my face as if she's giving me a hug.

Though this is a happy topic, you guys are making me sad. I miss the rituals I had with my Punkin http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angel.gif . She was also a hugger. She would run to the bed up the ramp 90 mph. After I got under the cover, she would put her little feet in my stomach and scooch really close until she was almost under me. Then she would put her cold wet nose right in my throat. She always slept with her head on my pillow. Josephine has taken that spot in the bed now, but she isn't as affectionate as Punkin was. Probably from being abandoned bless her heart. Treasure every moment guys, because it can end all to soon and then you're just left wishing you had it back!

Sorry, her anniversary date is coming up and I get all depressed.

Tanya . . . we understand! I know when I lose one of our 3 that it will make me crazy with grief. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/crying.gif But hang in there and remember the good times with joy!

Now, for my favorite ritual: When I come down from work I usually plop down, slouched on the couch. (Of course, this is also their dinner time.) First Top Spin comes over slowly and stands there resting his huge head on my lap and doesn't budge for a few moments, then Duck Butter gets next to me on one side and Masse on the other side. As Top Spin walks forward 1/2 step and raises his head to nose level the girls crawl up my body until Top Spin is licking my nose and the Dachsies are kissing my mouth. Finally I'll say OK and they get excited and run in circles cuz they know they're about to get dinner. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/kiss2.gif

Although they have several rituals . . . that's my favorite.

I love it in the morning when I get up and get Owen off the couch to go outside. He first gives up a grumpy groan, then he'll do the full dachie stretch, he has to press his fat feeties on my leg and he opens his mouth sooooo huge and lets out this whacky high picthed yawn with his tounge sticking out about 12 inches. Then he falls over on his side and tries to go back to sleep It makes me smile first thing in the morning http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

I love reading about all these happy moments!

My own favorite ritual takes place when we arrive at the office in the morning. After they greet each other and everyone else, they line up at the (always closed!) door to the "treat room"--the spare room where we keep supplies and dog treats. As soon as either my boss or I says, "Who wants treats?" the three dogs begin their highly individual begging routines: Arnold does "dog on springs" (jumping up and down, but only with his front legs), Peaches yodels, and Farfel sits and wags his tail so hard that he almost tips himself over.

They're so happy when we hand out the "treat of the day"--Booda, rawhide, beef bone stuffed with peanut butter... Each one runs to his/her special spot--Peaches in the middle of the floor in the front office, from where she can see everything that goes on; Farfie by my chair, because he is the Velcro Dog and must be near me at all times; and Arnold underneath Nadine's desk--where Farfie can't get to him to steal his treat!

It's a great way to start the day! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Pamela, just so you know... My dream job is where I get to take Owen to work with me!! I get sooooo jealous every time you post about how Peaches and Farfel and Arnold get to go to work with you!!

What I find "cute" is really "bad" behavior, but since I'm the Mom and it makes me laugh I encourage it.

EVERYTIME Frank goes up the steps- Wotan starts to scream and bark like his head is being torn from his black and tan little body! He then launches himself at Frank inbetween the stairs and tries to nip his foot. Harharhar...

MY favorite ritual is when he's at the end of the couch and I say "Wo-taaan!" and he bounds up my body and slams into my face with a wet tounge in the eye! He's my little babeeeeeeee

Oh, I have another one! Geez, no wonder I have so little free time . . . .I'm spending all of it amusing Isobel

When we are outside I say: "Get the penguin. Where's the penguin, Isobel?" She looks around and sniffs and begins to hunt. "There's the penguin!" I cry. She looks at me then where I'm pointing and goes in for the kill of the penguin.

The penguins are ants. It started when she was hunting ants as a baby and I called her attention to one by accidentally calling it a penguin after the stuffed one she had in the house. She has no idea what an ant is; but she's the only penguin-hunting dachsie I have found. My neighbors think I'm insane as I yell to my dog to get the p. thing. But, we enjoy it. Although now my house is full of all kinds of stuffed and other kinds of penguins from laughing friends! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif:

Sadie reacts to my hubby's and my return from work differently. When my hub comes home, she's a blur of squiggles in which she gives him plentiful kisses and tries to bite his nose. When I come home, she puts her head on my shoulder, gives me the sad eyes while I give her lots of kisses on her forehead and tell her how wonderful she is, and she falls asleep in my arms. Sometimes I try to get the lots of kisses, bite the nose reaction, but she won't do it for me. She's the "baby" when I'm around http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

On weekend mornings when I like to sleep in the furkids want to get up on their schedule. They start licking my ears in an attempt to get mom up and at 'em. I ignore it as long as I can then I will cover my face with my hands and say, Help me, I'm being attacked and eaten by wild weiner dogs in a high pitched squeaky voice. This sends them into a frenzy and encourages them to "attack" and try to get their licks in around my fingers. Finally when I've had enough we get up and go outside.

Hmmm...it's so hard to narrow it down to one, but I guess my favorite dachsie ritual is the "3-slugs-on-the-couch" routine. Penny ALWAYS snuggles into my left armpit with her little snout on my shoulder and big brown eyes staring at me as she sighs and drifts off to sleep. Maggie ALWAYS snuggles up against my right hip. If I take to long with the supper dishes, or sit too long at the computer they come looking for me, Penny whines a little and then heads to the couch. Maggie just sits mournfully at my feet waiting and waiting .... I am such a sap that I always feel honored that they are so determined to have their evening snuggle with me and I head for the couch! Even if it means I'll be finishing the dishes at 10:30!

You guys should have known there would be a post coming from me! I also have a hard time narrowing it down to one. But I'll have to say I love it in the morning when the radio goes off to wake us up and Twix comes crawling out from underneath the covers. She gets right next to my side and rolls over for some intense tummy rubbing. She just lays there and lets me be her tummy slave while she drifts in and out of sleep. Of course while I do this I tell her how much I love her and how I can't imagine life without her. The other thing she does that I love is she is a whimperer. She has done this since I got her. She will be cuddling up on my lap and just lets out little whimpers while getting comfy!

When I had my Max, he had a built in "time to go to bed" clock. When you sat on our couch, you could see my bedroom down the hallway and Max would go sit in the doorway of my room waiting for me to go to bed. If I didn't come he would come out and get in my lap for seconds and then go half way down the hall and wait. If I still didn't come, he would come back out to the living room and then go sit at the start of the hallway and wait. Then, he would do it all again if I didn't go to bed. He hated to be in bed without me. Gosh, I sure do miss him. I understand what you were saying, Tanya.

I do love reading these stories though, many cause me to giggle as they ring true for me too. Keep 'em comin'!

Mickey does the same thing every single morning. I could set a clock to it and it makes me laugh every day too. When I get up, I go into the bathroom to use the facilities. While doing so, Mickey walks in the bathroom, stops on the first throw rug in front of the tub, and does a full-body stretch, with a full-body groan and whine. Once I'm finished, I go over to him on the rug, and I kneel over him. He loves to be snuggled around the neck area. He will rub his head on my arms, and moan like crazy. I give him lots of kissies and his tail wags like crazy!

I think he does this until he's fully awake. I know he's awake, because when he's ready, he will give a good body shake, and then he runs to get his toys. Snuggle time is over, for now anyway!

After he gets a shower he goes to his sheepskin and rolls around like a mad dog, then he's off to the races. He runs around the house like crazy. All you see is a red/brown blur.

Then he will stop and look at me and I scratch him on the sides of his neck and put my cheek on his and he'll nibble my ear and make gruntting sounds. I stand up and say "that 'ill do pig, that 'ill do"

I've been sitting here reading this strand going "Aww". Aren't dachsies just the most affectionate little furkids? Augies Dad, that reminds me Babe was on telly a while ago and as usual I cried at the end. Well, Shelbie jumped up on my lap with a really concerned look on her face and very gently kissed me on the nose. (Is it smoky in here or is it me!). My favourite Shelbie ritual is the night, night biscuit. I usually go up to bed before Nick and before I go, I go downstairs for a night, night biscuit (our living room is on the second floor). Shelbie will wait at the top of the stairs until she sees it in my hand, dash into the living room and do her "look how straight I'm sitting" routine until she gets it. I don't have to say a word! I'm writing this on Wednesday and we're going for two weeks on Sunday and I'm going to miss her soooo much

Okay, had to think a little bit on this one....think????Ooooh how painful Yes, here it is..... I love it in the morning when Maddie climbs up and drapes herself around my neck and tell me...."Mommy, I gotta go NOW!" As for Miss Dolleroo, I really love it how she MUST have her belly rub before getting up. Try to pick her up before a belly rub and you have a limp upside down dachsie. I sure would miss having my mornig rituals, that's for sure.
