View Full Version : Do you feed your dachsie table scraps?

I was just curious about this topic--we try not to give Beau any scraps unless he gets lucky and I drop something!

But the other day we were driving through the dunkin donuts drive through with him in his crate in the back & the lady offered us a munchkin donut for him--I said no thanks, (what if she gave us chocolate??) Just wondered what everyone else does!

We very rarely give table scraps. Only on special occasion and tiny pieces. And fed in their bowl, never from the table.

I do get munchkins for them on rare occassions too. The plain cake ones. I split one between the 2.

I said On Occasion as occasionally I have used cheese or peanut butter to hid pills. Grama on the other paw, is a different story. I swear it is easier to train a doxie than it is to train grama (could be her german background coming out :eekdevil: )

I voted occasionally. We try to avoid feeding table scraps, although my daughter does try to sneak her vegies to him, but he is our resident 'pre-wash' cycle for the dishwasher so he does get some people food stuff.

I've never really been into feeding animals people food, in fact my cats will sniff at things and walk away. With Buddy, I never wanted him to beg at the table. He lays on my feet during dinner, doesn't beg. But open the dishwasher and he will come running from anywhere in the house!

 Well not as much as they would like us to. But they do get some people food. Not much but when we are done eating, the plates are so good to clean off. The other day I made salmon patties and they cleaned up the pan I baked them in. Normally I would pan fry them. But I am trying to eat healthy so it wasn't to bad that they got the leftovers. I figure Ivy must think it is the best treat in the world. She was still at it 30 mineutes later.
We had been hard boiling eggs for Chewy when we still had him. The vet had recommended extra protein for him.
We used to give them popcorn but with all the salt I asked my roommate to stop letting them have any.

every night DH saves a small portion of his meat from dinner for them. Usually it is no more than bite sized divided between the 2. I have to watch or he will split a chicken leg between them + their kibble. He is such a softy.

I voted on occasion because sometimes I let them have a special treat. I also can't be held responsible for what my nephew sneaks or "drops" when he's eating:eekdevil:

They some times get a small piece of chicken, steak or cheese...but most of the time when I take the dishes back to the kitchen I just give them a piece of one of their dog treats.

Sadly to say yes, quite often. But it is never that much. I split it 3 ways. I don't give them stuff with alot of salt or greasey fat. They love veggies!! If i start feeding raw, can i still feed veggies?

Sophie's on a controlled diet for her coat and I do not want to throw off the balance. However, she does get "add ins" to her food at her regular meal time. We are trying to help her gain a little weight (Imagine that!)

Exactly the same here... And of course if we ever drop anything by accident it's gone in a nanosecond! :dizzy:

We used to give occasional treats - pieces of chicken or steak - but no more. Maggie & Penny are both on Rx diets and we're working so hard to melt the extra pounds off of Heidi. (Besides, it would be pretty hard to sneak her a treat without the other girls knowing about it! ;))

I cannot abide beggar dogs, but my husband is what we call an "un-trainer" who sneaks them treats when I'm not looking. :pullhair:

I feed mine table scraps and contrary to what people think it does not make them beg at the table. They know that they only get fed when we are done and wait quietly until we are. We eat a diet of mainly grilled meat, salad and veggies almost no junk food so I don't think it's bad for them. I have very healthy dogs who live to be 16 and 17 years old.

Mine always get the last bites of the meat from my dinner. They both go lay in their "spots" and wait until dinner is done. As soon as I move my chair back they spring into action! And they also get raw veggies and stuff while I'm preparing meals. I'm just a sucker for those doxie eyes...:D

That is not table scraps. That is "floor duty". It is their "duty" to cleanup under the high chair (or wherever food falls) That food does not count and has no calories   (at least that is what my guys try to tell me).

for occassionally. They do get some scraps every now and then:D

Another vote for "occasionally" here. He gets a few scraps of steak whenever we eat it which is pretty rare...after we eat and in his bowl only. And, of course, my DH is known for dropping food on the floor, so Schroeder knows who to stand under when we eat. It was funny one night...he wouldn't eat a piece of broccoli when it was offered to him, but when Dave dropped a piece on the floor while we were eating, it disappeared in seconds. I guess Schroeder figured he had to get it before we picked it up...no matter what it was :D

I voted occasionally. Ally sit's politely on her rug by the dinning table. We have tile you see and it's quite cold on her tushie! :yikes: I usually fall into her pleading eye's and give her a small bite. Sometimes she get's to lick my plate if we have has something like gravy but my hubby hate's it when I do that!

I said "occasionally". We never ever feed her while we're eating or from our plates (unless we drop something), but boy, does she know the sound of my knife on the cutting board!! I normally give her a piece of whatever fruit or veggie I'm chopping.

I give my 2 my leftovers all the time--esp. meat--I have always heard that it is not good for their skin/coats--that it makes them shed more and dries their skin out-

I eat lightly steamed or baked veggies every day and share a few with Mia. How else would she get her veggies? She loves carrots, potato, and broccoli (so far). Oh, and once I let her try licking sweet potato off my finger. She loved it, but it had margerine on it, so she just got one taste. I have given her little samples of pasta, too, and she likes it. All these little bites go in the dog bowl when I'm no longer eating. I want to try pumpkin and have a can of it, but haven't opened it yet.

Occasionally here also. If it's an intentional 'scrap', it's usually cheese or baby carrots. Every once in a while we will give him a piece or two of grilled steak or chicken. My children will drop food from time to time and Cricket is pretty quick to get it (he lurks under the table waiting for food from the sky to fall). The kids are learning though that lots of what we eat isn't healthy for him and are getting better table manners  . What is kind of funny is if chocolate is dropped. It becomes a MAD dash to see who can get to it first: my 9 yr old, my 3 yr old, or Cricket. Believe it or not, the kids beat him to it 9 out of 10 times. They take the "chocolate is dangerous" thing VERY seriously. When they do bend to pick it up, amazingly, Cricket will back away and let them.

Absolutely not...unless she gets lucky when I cook. That was one of the first things my boyfriend and I discussed about her, was that we are not feeding her people food at all. She has tons of different puppy treats though! :) That sounds mean, I really am just watching her weight though.

I put on occassion, but they get "tastes" almost daily. They sit and watch while the humans eat because they can't let the floor be dirty!! They also know that when I pack my sandwich for my lunch on work days, they each get a pinch of lunch meat or cheese. I don't let them have any more than that. My ex used to give them a bite of everything, and after the divorce, I had to put the babies on a diet! They're all at a good weight now, and my vet is very impressed!

 I'm terrible! I try to give her very small
amounts when I do. My mom is the one who is bad
whenever we visit. She won't stop no matter what I say.

I'm so worried about my little guy...he's chubby and I don't know why. We walk him and he only eats Nutro Lite, veggies and very limited snacks, but...?!

I'm very strict about not giving people food...not only can pets put on a lot of weight from it, they can get diabetes too!

I personally don't give table scraps to any dog (except Christmas, or Thanksgiving...then they get a tiny piece of something, I voted on occasion because of the holidays). Other members in my family do give them scraps occasionally, but not often.

I do on a regular basis but then I will cut back on his dog kibble, or mix it in. I sure don't want an over weight Doxie.................my husband is the worst one for that, have to keep both eyes on him.............he is worse then my Buddy.......

My girls get table scraps everyday. I rinse the seasoning off under water and mix the table food in with their kibble. Mostly chicken, steak, or vegetables. I just cut back on kibble when they get meat. Molly will eat her food with or without scraps but Maggie our bichon is a very picky eater and will only eat if something is added to her kibble.

At first we decided not to feed our Mina nothing that we eat, well after visiting my parents she started to beg. We started off with a few plain noodles, and now both dogs get noodles, berries, and scrambled eggs. And of course they get a little something on thanksgiving and christmas.

My girls wait patiently until we are finished eating. Then if there are any veggies left or small portion of chicken or beef, it is split between them. Would rather give them a treat than throw it away.

Occasionally - fruits and vegetables, and on rare occasions, a bit of meat.

My little men sit patiently while I eat. They get a taste of my dinner when I'm done eating.

The small amount of people food is not that much and it is their reward for not being beggars.

Rarely...and I don't mean cooked rare  If we accidentally drop, of course Chief is there. When I am cooking or baking he usually gets some extra---I've been doing that more lately, so he's a happy pupper. :)

Never....I have to be really strict about Bridget's eating. She is on prescription food because she had bladder stones when she was 2 years old.

Only occasionally. They get treats such as apple, green beans, p-nut butter in a Kong... If I have something that is fairly healthy I will give them each a bite. My husband is the food sneaker! I have to watch him like a hawk, if it were up to him he would stuff them full and they would both be enormous!!!:Sun2:

The only time she gets scraps is when something drops or she "finds" something on the floor.
I did give her a tiny bite of ham from my egg mcmuffin when we were travelling because I felt guilty with her in my lap in the car while I was eating. It looked like she actually had stars in her eyes when she ate it:luv:

Mocha gets most of her scraps if my daughter throws something she doesn't really care for on the floor. I will give her a slice of apple when I'm cutting one for my daughter. She doesn't get bad table scraps for the most part. I don't mind the healthy stuff like fruits or veggies, provided I haven't seasoned the veggies.

Sometimes my guys get to lick Dinner Plates. They are so clean afterwards that I can just put them back in the cabinet till next time :cheer:

Just Kidding.... My guys love leftover Peas and salad and fruit, They eat chicken , Mashed Potatoes and steak but not from the table, I mix it in with the kibble.
I do not feed them junk food, with the exception that they LOVE pretzels and chips during football

At Burger King, the manager always gives my furbabies chicken if they are in the car...so of course I would not deny them those "special" lil' treats. I make Pumpkin Yogurt Treats & Peanut Butter Yogurt Treats twice a week, plus they get their baby carrots everyday....that's people food, but it's good for them. And when I have the energy, I bake them pumpkin, peanut butter or garlic cookies for dogs.

depends.. usually no we dont but if im eating a bowl of cherios then yes, i give her a couple, things like that yes she gets a little something special. Otherwise she eats "people" food as her main course (raw meats, veggies, exc)
