View Full Version : :( *SIGH* When People Just Discard Their Dogs With No Thought.

It just makes me sad, is all. Was listening to our COO talk about his dog that they just put down. It was only 4 or 5 years old but it was intruding with their new baby. Now if they felt they MUST get rid of the dog....a Lab, I think....WHY DIDN'T THEY CONSIDER RESCUE??? I'm SURE there are many people out there who would love to have a 5 year old healthy Lab. Sadly not the case. He went on to say, quite casually I might say, "We just had her put to sleep." I had to slap my hand over my mouth from interrupting and giving my 2 cents worth. Afterall I was eavesdropping. SIGH.....

I totally understand your frustration. Doing shelter rescue I see alot of dogs turned in by there owner to the pound that are wonderful dogs. And they are turning it into a very bad shelter with a very high kill rate before we started working out of the shelter. I wish that more people understood that getting a dog is a till death do us part committment. Not one until the dog gets too big or your life changes. And if you can't live up to your end of the bargin, then you find the dog a good home, not turn it into a shelter or just put it down.

I dont understand this either. I had heard another story about a dog who was PTS because she was in labor and need a c-section and the owners didnt want to pay for it.
People should need a license to have pets.

I'd like to know who the vets are who are doing these euthanasias--what the heck is the matter with THEM?? What kind of veterinarian would kill a healthy dog because the owner said it had become inconvenient???

There is an ad for a 14-year-old dachshund on the DRWP page. The owner has listed the dog for adoption because "we just don't have time to spend with her any more." After 14 years.

This is why it's important that handguns be licensed. If just anyone could buy a handgun whenever they wanted, a lot of these owners would be among the missing...

The worst story was the one my vet told me when I took my latest foster (whose parents hadn't had time for her after 7 years) in. He told me of the lady who brought her 4-year -old poodle in to be put to sleep. It seems she had redecorated and the poodle didn't match the new decor. I asked how he handled it and he replied that he found the dog a new home. Rena

I know which dog you're talking about Pamela. If you want to send puppy support payments, I'll take that old boy home http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif How tempting it is, but there is no way I could afford two dogs and I really need a yard of my own. But, look at his sweet face!!

Just to refresh your memories re:Baylea.
Given to wife as Christmas present.
They bred her 3 times in less than 4 years and sold puppies.
Moved to a new home.
Wasn't housebroken.
Didn't want her messing on new carpet!
Solution...get rid of her!
****************
I am soooooo glad. She _is_ housebroken, given the opportunity to go out.
What a terrible rest of her life she would have had as a puppy factory.
We love her, she is a doll, Greta loves her.
A pox on those people and everyone like them. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/mad.gif

Omigod, Amy--the dog you posted is NOT the same one that I was talking about! I was talking about Mallory, in Illinois, whose owner declares that she has a great temperament, but at 14, "is just too old to keep with our fast paced life."

Where are those guns when you need them?

I have e-mailed owner, managing to write a letter that does not express my total loathing and disdain for her, and asked her to surrender the dog to rescue. Maybe you could do that with Teddy?....

I hope that when those people become old that their kids don't have time for them because of their "fast paced lives". I don't think these people ever bond with their dogs or anything else for that matter.

Another very sad story is the dog from Texas on the DRWP site. She is 17.5 years and her family doesn't have time for her or the next dog posted who is 8 and plays too roughly with the 17.5 year old (they have had only 7 years). I am sure there are circumstances where a pet must be given up, but ... it isn't fair. Rena

Mallory's owner has gotten in touch with me and says yes, they will consider surrendering her to us. You all would be so proud of me--my e-mails to her are perfectly businesslike and warm. Don't want to do anything to alienate her before she gives us the dog....

I know that Mallory will find a good home with us, but I feel so sad for her. What is she going to think when she's taken from her "pack," her home of 14 years, and put among strangers? It's rotten. It's unfair, as Rena says.

"Fast-paced lifestyle!" Give me a large break, lady! I know there's a special place in the Hot Place for people like this.

Some of the (SHOW) people that say they are BREEDERS ask us that is my husband and I why we do not place our old non-breeding done showing dogs.I tell them these are MY PETS the Loves of my life not something I get rid of since they are spayed and not BIG SHOW dogs.We took our princess AWFUL to a show last March as a lark for her to go by-by and she won BEST VETERAN IN SHOW & BEST OPP.SEX Longhair at the age of 11 she showed like a real whirlwind it was great to win with a dog most people would throw away or as they say PLACE.Finding any dog a home where they are wanted is a great thing I do some work with our club to place and find homes and make sure its for life, that is how we sell our pups also for life our they come back to us or at least we strive for that.KAYE

Kaye, congratulations to Awful on her victory! I went to a dachsie show in Racine, Wisconsin, and they had a veterans' competition there too. It brought (happy!) tears to my eyes, seeing these wonderful old frosted dogs stacking themselves and posing and just strutting their stuff! They obviously loved the show ring and felt right at home there. I wasn't the only one sniffling either, believe me! It was quite a sight.

Oh, yes! It has been about 6 years since I attended a show. At the time it was the Dobes I was there to see. (Always at the crack of dawn, ugh.)
My favorite was the Veterans' Class.
It didn't seem to make any difference how long it had been since they competed, they were there to show the world they hadn't lost the winning attitude. It is no exaggeration to say you get all choked up watching them. And the real caring breeders, who are there with them, are just bursting their buttons with pride.
If you were to suggest they just "hand off" their show dog past it's prime, they would be outraged.
As Wireweiners pointed out there are "breeders" and then there are real breeders. It pays to understand the difference when considering the purchase of a pup.
Climbing off the soapbox,

About the vets that put a healthy dog to sleep... here's why:

"No, I'd rather have him PTS than go to a stranger's home."

"No, it's nothing personal, but I've heard that some vets sell them to labs, so just put him to sleep."

"Well, if you won't put him to sleep, I'll just take him out in the desert & turn him loose. Maybe someone will pick him up."

"We have to put all twenty cats to sleep because she specified in her will that that's what she wanted done. I'm the executor, & there's nothing I can do."

"If you won't put him to sleep, I'll just take him to Dr. X (the butcher)."

"If you won't do it, I'll have to have my husband shoot him."

And on and on and on...

Sometimes, my vet would bribe them to let him find the animal a good home by letting them not pay their bill.

Mankind has a lot to account for.

Pamela-did you say Illinios! If I could, I would adopt that dog right now! Timber needs a friend that wil play with him and is not a cat.

Penny's Aunt,

Stomach in knots and tears falling again. What you say is so very true and also true that there will be a time when people will have to account for their actions....good or bad.
