This happened last week to a friend's co-worker. (Wotan can attest to the brazen attitude of coyotes!!) She has (Had) 3 small dogs, one mini long haired dachsie, one poodle, one something else, same size though. She has a doggie door in the garage that goes outside into her fenced yard (East San Diego County) and the doggie's were happy to go in and out during the day.

It seems that the coyotes in the area figured it out. All three dogs were attacked, only one has survived, though it's in critical condition... It was torn up from throat to belly and left for dead by the coyotes when they were disturbed by a human. The other two dogs were eaten, only collars and parts of the puppies were left. The poor woman, who's life was these dogs, is wrecked.

Word to the wise, as safe as you perceive your backyard to be, it may not be safe enough. So sad!!

The big coyote that grabbed Wo was smart enough to know that Diva and Sadie Mae were fishing with Frank for the day. I think that critter sat on the hillside until he figured the place wasn't well guarded and then came down to see if it could get a goose or chicken snack. It almost ended up with a dachsie meal instead!

That day was one of the most frightening I've ever had, and I don't want any other dog or cat parents to go through that!

Watch those babies well!

I am in the process of moving to a farm where there may be potential bear and coyote, and I am nervous about my babies. Because my older one tends to wander, we would never leave them unattended anyway, but we were going to set up a fenced in area that we may leave them in, but only if we are home. I am very nervous about it. I can't even imagine the woman who had to come home to that mess. Devastated would be an understatment.

Wow, I'm glad I have Katie to keep the coyotes away from my guys. Although I think a lone coyote would think twice about taking Pippin on. We have had coyotes come within 50 yards of the house but they have never tried to come closer. Katie will bay and roar at them but never tries to go after them, just warns them off. I think our country coyotes have a healthier respect for humans than suburban coyotes as they are still hunted here. Our neighbor had chicken houses and dumped his dead chickens where the coyotes could eat them. That kept them fat and happy and they haven't been a real menace to our calves. But he lost his houses in a big snow last winter and decided to quit raising chickens. I hope we don't have a problem this winter when they get hungry and there aren't any chickens for them to eat.

Our coyote population is very high and they come right up on our patio and dare us to come out of the house. The big dog barks and they laugh so beware even if you have large dogs. We don't even live in coyote country just central Illinois in the country. There was a report one bit a little girl on her patio in the spring. Please watch those babies at night.

Coyotes will also set a trap for domestic dogs: one coyote will come close to a house or loose dog & lure him away, then lead him to the rest of the pack, who all jump him together. They can take down a deer this way, & a large dog, but the small ones are easier to carry off.

Coyotes have survived Man's encroachment because they are smart & learn pretty fast.

Coyotes eat varmints, pets, fruit and vegis, garbage and anything they can get. Our big dogs don't wander either- but when we hear a pack howling, Frank goes out and blasts off a round or two of his shotgun.

That keeps 'em moving off. People's yards and little pets are just too easy pickin's.

I've heard of stories where the coyote lures big dogs off and the rest attack. I still don't know how Wotan survived his encounter with one. It must have tried to take him off somewhere safe to look over some more b/f making him lunch!

I know that Wo bit coyote in the lip to get away! Good old dachsie spunk and luck!

Now if everyone would get a Catahoula . . . http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif Right, Mary?

Top Spin does so well . . . I'm not sure if there are any coyotes in the whole state of Michigan. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

This is not to make light of the horror of Amy's co-worker . . . I just can't even imagine the pain she must feel.

I've only had one experience with coyotes. We were up at my parent's cabin in the Catskills. It's very remote up there. They've got several acres up there, with not many neighbors, so it can be pretty desolate.

We were watching TV the one night and all of a sudden we heard a whole pack howling right off to the side of the deck! I freaked out!
We didn't really know what to do. I've never heard anything like that. I guess they must have smelled Mickey in the yard or something.

Well, we turned on the spotlights. Chris got out the shotgun, and I got out a bat. We went outside, and the pack disappeared. But everytime we took Mickey out at night, we went with him, well-equipped with some form of protection. Too scary!

The neighbors who live up there say that they see the coyotes all the time, COMING IN THEIR YARD!!! The lady will be washing the morning dishes and she'll look up out the window and one will be standing in their driveway! They have no fear! They've got a big dog too, but I know they let him run...and I would be too scared to let him go like that.

Katie and her mom will challenge the coyotes when they start to howl but are smart enough not to get too close. Last winter, a big coyote came out of the fence row behind my house. Katie challenged him and he just stopped and looked at her. I was in the yard too. That was when the pups were young and I would put them in an xpen in the yard. I never left them in the pen unless I was there to keep an eye on them.

Hi all:
Years ago when living in N. California, backed up to National Forest, I continually worried about what might come out of the woods and attack our pets.
My solution was to run three extra "hot wires" on all the corral, pasture and even along the top of the yard fencing.
Either I was very lucky or the electric fence did the job.
A fringe benefit, it even kept the deer out of my veggie garden.

The eeriest coyote experience I ever had was early last spring. I was out on my horse with Katie, her mom, Monday and Tramp, the chow mix rescue looking for a heifer that was due to calve. It was late in the afternoon and kind of a cold, blustery overcast day. I was riding back home through the woods when the coyotes tuned up big time just across the bayou to my right. They were answer by another pack to my left. The dogs had been ranging out chasing squirrel and rabbits. All 3 came back to me and the horse growling with hackles up. They stuck really close to me for the rest of the way home. Just as we came out of the woods, a big coyote ran across the trail. Kind of spooky. I think coyotes are interesting critters and I like to hear their song but I don't want them too close to me and the dogs. <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm3.gif" border=0>
