This doesn't involve a dachsie, but is important to those of us who love animals. The person who sent this to me is a friend's daughter, so I believe it's legit.
> >
> > Robby an 11 yr. old Belgian Malinois will be killed in less that 6 months.
> > He is not sick. He has not done anything wrong. Why? Because Robby is a
> > professional military working dog. What this means is when Robby is retired
by the military he will be euthanized based on military policy which states:
such dogs after their years of service as military K-9 officers trained to
sniff out explosives and drugs are euthanized when they retire. In military
terms retire means euthanized. Even though
Robby's handler Shawn Mathey wants to adopt Robby, the military plans on
going ahead with the plan.
For more information, see Laura Denger's article in July 16 Dayton Daily
News.

Thanks Lanie, I never knew this was military protocol. Sure, let's see what we can do. I'm wondering if a senator could help.

Lanie, How is this going to work? If we copy this message then these names will be repeated.

Gee, I knew that the dogs that served in Vietnam were euthanized because there was a disease or parasite that affected dogs that they didn't want brought back to the states but I didn't know they did that to all the dogs that could no longer be used for service. What a way to pay them back for helping save peoples lives. The police usually let the handler adopt their dogs when they retire, why can't the military? Sounds like we should write our congressperson.

I live in Dayton, and I have not heard this story until now. I got on the Dayton Daily News website to see If I could read the article, but they wanted money for that...I get the paper too, but I must have missed that article.

I sent this petition on, and I will be trying to see If I can find out more. Dayton has a high military population since Wright-Patterson AFB and the US Air and Space Museum are both here. It really saddens me to hear of this crazy policy.

I hope we can save Robby. I just emailed the message to 49 people . . . did a copy/paste in the email window and typed my name as the number 1.

Lanie, maybe you should put this under the RESCUE topic, too. ?????

Thanks for letting us know,

Mark

Please see my post under Rescue, dated 8-14. The original posting sent to many boards wasn't exactly accurate. Robbie is in no immediate danger, & will be evaluated & a decision made about whether or not he can live out his final days with his handler. He is being treated for arthritis by the military vets right now.
