Like the toe clippers with the straight edge? I've been using that on Maggie. Even though she hates getting her nails clipped. Thank God I've never cut the quick.

I used them on my puppy when she was little. Seemed to work ok. As Maggie get's bigger her nails will too and I think you find it difficult to clip them with human clippers.
I got Ally a pair at Petco and it took me awhile to get good at them...she wiggles like crazy! There are basically two kinds. The first being the guillotine kind the have a hole in the center to clip and the other is more like scissors. I prefer the scissor type because I can see what I am doing better.

I think the nails will get to big and hard for human nail clippers. I have a nice pair I got at Petsmart. They have a guard and work pretty quickly. Sometimes if Dexter isn't in the mood I only cut a couple at a time. But, most of the time especially with lots of little treats he tolerates the clipping.
Thou in the beginning I couldn't believe how much a little guy could hate something, and put up such a struggle.:eekdevil:

The only thing my mom uses on her small dogs is human toe nail clippers. She nips just the tips off ( with Button being a red dachsie with black toenails, she is scared to cut any more than just the tip) and I use the same thing on Izzy. It seems to work just fine for us, and we have been using them for years.

We have a small dremel tool that we use for Alexis' nails. She responds to it alot better than the doggie nail clippers.

I find that the guilletine type work best for Sophie. They don't make the sudden "snip" sound and the size of the hole in the clippers makes it impossible to go further than a certain point. She eventually learned that she gets a treat if she behaves for a clipping.
