I just wanted to give people heads up, especially those looking to buy puppies, on alternate Breed Registries. Here's a great link that explains them http://www.nopuppymills.com/akc.html

Don't be fooled because a breeder tells you that their pups are CKC registered, or UKC or WKC registered. AKC does a bad enough job trying to keep puppy millers from registering... these alternate registries exist (in my opinion) to make a buck and to deceive novice pet buyers.

Do your research before getting a new dachshund, don't just run out to the pet store and pick one up, or comb through the Sunday paper and get a dog just because the words "registered" are along side the ad. Take your time, ask questions, and don't act impulsivly.

That's very good advice!

I could probably set up a registry myself. I could call it the SPDCR: Sue's Purebred Dog & Cat Registry. I could solicit all the dog & cat mills in America (yes, there are cats in tiny cages, too, producing 3 litters a year until they die of exhaustion & are tossed into the dumpster) exclusively, & make a few million dollars a year. So what if I didn't get all the names right, the mills wouldn't care. Or notice, for that matter.

And if some twit who paid $400 for a defective pup from a pet shop called to confirm the registration, I could say without hesitation: "Yes, indeed! I do all the registration for the SuckerBait Pet Shop & their sources."

Since AKC has stepped up its investigation of registration practices and started the Frequently Uses Sires program, "alternative" registries have sprung up like mushrooms after a rain. I read the article on the no puppy mills web site and found it very accurate and informative. After all the publicity on puppy mills, you would think that people would have better sense than to buy from a pet store. What scares me are the web sites of millers that are mascarading as legitimate breeders. They talk about caring about the puppies they produce and have a bunch of cute pictures but how do you know what's really there. I bought Rita from a breeder in Washington State and had her shipped to me. But, I knew that particular breeder had been in dachsies for a long time, had an excellent reputation and was breeding the type of dog I was looking for. She knew me as I had owned another dog from her kennel that I had bought from someone else plus we had mutual dachsie friends. That is the only way I would buy a dog sight unseen. Caveat emptor really applies when buying a pup.
