Okay, here's the story on how Rosie got to be mine. Forgive me for my long-windedness :)

I already had an eight year old border collie/brittany mix (Red) and my two year old fawn boxer (Sadie), not to mention my six cats, one foster kitty, and two rabbits. But one day, while browsing Petfinder I spotted an elderly toy poodle and something about him just called to me. Well, I put in my inquiry only to find out he'd already been adopted. Then I supposed that if I had the time and inclination to take care of him, then I had the time and inclination to take care of another dog. I started looking around for another smallish dog. I had my sights on something senior.

I hit all the shelters in about a hundred mile radius, but none of them had anything that quite clicked. I very nearly adopted a sweet, elderly little Italian Greyhound but he was being held as a stray and his owners recovered him. Which was very good news for them, but a bit disappointing.

Then, one day, I went to the shelter nearest my house and out in front of the doors was a woman holding a little piebald doxie in her arms, stopping everyone that came past and asking them if they were there for adoptions. I stopped to talk to her and learned the story. Apparently, the dog belonged to a friend of hers who had gone in for rehab. She had taken the dog but could not keep her thanks to her landlord, and she really didn't want to take her into the shelter. She didn't think Rosie would handle it well. Well, of course...long story short, I ended up leaving with Rosie.

She wasn't in very good shape. She had sores on her stomach, back and ears that looked like a food allergy (and since its mostly cleared up since I put her on the high quality kibble and raw, that's probably the case). But mostly she was in a bad way emotionally. She's very handshy and seems to have a problem trusting. She's VERY sweet just very unsure and easy to startle. Her training is odd...she knows 'speak' and how to sit up and beg (which I've been discouraging since it can't be good on her back)...but she doesn't know sit or lay or stay, or any of the other 'basic' commands. She wasn't very leash trained though now she's doing magnificently.

I don't know. This dog has clearly had a very hard past but I'm totally in love with her. She's the sweetest little thing and all I can hope is that from now on, her life will be all that it wasn't before.

Oh boy was this meant to be or what! Lucky day for both you and Rosie. I'm sure with time and patience she will develop into the dachshund she was always meant to be. (I think they all come from royalty :D or they think they do)

Thank you for sharing her story with us. It will be great to hear how she adjusts and blossoms with the right care and love.

Thanks guys :) Yeah, I don't think she'd have done well in the shelter either. She's still very timid at times and loud noises and lots of fuss tend to scare her a bit. She IS greatly improving. Before she would plant herself on my lap and not go near my other dogs (didn't help my boxer kept trying to biff her on the head and play) but now she's seeking them out and even giving them a kiss or two. Her tail comes out and wags now instead of staying between her legs. Course, it doesn't help that my foster cat keeps trying to catch it when it wags...
