This is a survey for all of you that have purchased dogs from breeders. I am mainly curious about Contracts.

Did you sign a contract –was it for a puppy or adult?

What did the contract guarantee from the breeder?

What did the contract require of you?

For example: I signed a contract with a health guarantee for one year. I had to promise to spay/neuter within one year. It required me to return the dog to her, or have her approval of placement if we could no longer keep him at any point. It requires that the dog be fed 100% complete dog food as the main source of nutrition (she’s think of amending that to include the BARF diet –just does not want the babies to get fat). The puppy must be an inside dog –(no sleeping or staying outside all day long). The puppy must receive regular vet care and heartworm prevention year-round. I’m sure there was more, but that is all I can remember offhand and the contract is at home.

Thanks for your answers!! A Friend of mine breeds toy poodles –not very often- and is looking to update her contracts. She is wondering what breeders in other areas or of other breeds include (she does not have internet/email. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif).

Yes I have signed contracts and I have contracts on any puppies that I sell. My pet contracts sound very much like the one you signed. For the pet contracts mine also states that I will retain the papers until proof of spaying or neutering and in 20 years I have NEVER had anyone have a problem with that requirement.

I had an adoption contract with Owen... I had to call her 24 hours after I brought Owen home and fill her in on how we were doing. Then, I had to call again in a week, then in two weeks. If things weren't working out, he HAD to be returned to her. Anyone who breeds or participates in rescue must have contracts like the one you stated in order to be on the up and up. Other wise, I think of them as simply money making puppy factories.
