Hi all:
Just finished making two of the slumber sacks; one for Greta and one for Baylea. Bought a yard and a quarter of the immitation lambs wool for the inside. Had sturdy pocket denim I used for the outside. Will do some creative decorations with fabric paint to personalize. Not that Greta the Stout could comfortably crawl into the one made for Baylea! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/emb.gif
Greta is on a short road trip with hubby so Baylea is my "test" dachsie. She loves it but because it is a bit too warm for this season, she crawls in, turns around and lies there with her head sticking out. Should be a real winner, come winter.
They were a snap to make and considerably less expensive than buying them.

Good Idea! I might try that myself after the coat project -minus the lambswool. My boys love to chew that stuff up!!!! I'd probably choose the polar fleece that I am making th coats of to line them If I make them. Can you post a piccy of the final product??

Roxane,

This may sound like a silly question but could I make this without a sewing machine? I can do very little basic stuff (I feel so inadequate) and would really love to make one for Isobel. It doesn't seem like it would be hard, but would it hold together ok doing it by hand?

Hi Krista, Mary:
Krista I would _love_ to post a picture. I've been promised a digital camera for a birthday just past. As I've explained to Georgette, I need to do deep research on which one will work best with my webtv unit. Once accomplished you will probably get really tired of seeing Greta and Baylea. Until then I will do my best to explain exactly how I did the slumber sack.
Mary, yours is a question I'm not sure how to answer. I would, as Krista mentioned, use a polar fleece rather than the lambs wool.It would be much easier to work with when attempting this by hand. There were really only 2 seams to sew since I put what is the back end of the sack on the fold of the material. I did cut the lining a bit longer and turned it back as a cuff. I also sewed into the turned back cuff some very stiff buckrim thinking that would make it easier for the pupper to lift up the front to find her way in. My biggest challenge was size, knowing they have to be able to stand up a bit to turn around and snuggle.
Baylea weighs 7-8 lbs., is 7 1/2 inches at the shoulder and measures about 13 inches from the nape of the neck to the base of her tail. I made her sack 21 x 21 inches, finished dimensions. I move it around from on the floor next to my chair, to beside me on the couch. To get her to use it the first time I put a small chewy inside. Now, 2 days later, she needs no incentive.
I won't tell you the size for Greta the Stout, it would embarrass her.

If I can help with any more details just let me know.

Roxane

For those of us who don't recognize which end of the needle is which, you might try the dachshund delights catalogue. I bought Pluto a fleece red and white sack, very spiffy looking. He, of course, refuses to go in it, even though he loves digging under blankets, but he will sleep http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/sleep.gif on top. I never even thought of sewing a coat. I went out and bought a crochet pattern and learned how to crochet while making Toby a sweater just to fit him. I would put it on him while I was at various stages of making it so it would fit him perfectly. Now I can make one in about 2 days. I have made 3 for him so far in various colors. I thought that I accomplished a lot considering I had never crocheted anything before.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif

Hceci you are just one more example of the talented members here. I'll bet the coats look great!
Lanie, Dachshund Delights is a resource I am not familiar with. Are they on line? Love to see what they are offering.
Thanks,
Roxane

Roxane,

Here's the Dachsie Delight site:
www.doxidelight.com (http://www.doxidelight.com)

This is a great dachsie gift site. They are located here in Ohio and travel around the state with the shows and specialties. They have a great harness called Hug a Dachs (I think that's the name) for riding in the car and another for walking. I bought a pair of silver Dachsie earings from her at one of the specialties a few years back. They are smooth wieners; the head is in the front of the ear and the body hangs behind . . .very cute. Hmmm, I haven't seen them since my move and now I'll have to dig to find them. I must wear them to the Dachsie Fest in October!

Take Care . . . .mary

Unfortunately, the Dachsie Delights Store is closed this month -hopefully it will be open soon.

Mary, Do you think they will be at the SW Specialty on Sept 9, in lebanon??

Are you planning on checking it out?? Con and Fin's Mom and I are going to go.

Krista,

Why is the store closed? Since they go to most or all the specialties and the major Columbus dog show, I'd assume they be at the SW specialty. My sister and niece are coming in from Detroit on the 8th, and since we have no major plans I bet I could talk them in to going at least for a bit.

Do you have directions? I am not familiar with that area at all. Where will we all meet?

I have the address and these are the driving directions I got off Yahoo:

It is at the
National Guard Armory
1 E. Taylor ST
Lebanon, OH 45036

Take I-70 west
Take I-75 south
Take the OH-123 exit
Left on to 123
left on to 122
right on to OH 123 / US 42
Left on to 123

I'm not sure if that is really the best route. I usually go into Lebabnon from the Traders World exit....don't know if that is the same one as OH 123.... I'll ask my mom the direction Wizard and get back to you.

Clarese and I haven't discussed time or meeting place yet either. Guess I need to email her. We are planning on bringing our puppers, do you know if that is usually allowed??

Krista,

Thanks for the directions! I have every plan to be there and I will try to convince my sister and niece to join me . . . they think a herd of wiener dogs together is a hoot, so they may weel want to go.

As for personal pups on the grounds: usually they frown on that, although I have seen at every specialty and show a number of dogs not in the line up. I'm really not sure how these people would feel about it. Isobel will assume (as she always does) that she will be going . . . and I'd hate do disappoint her

Call me after you talk to Clarese if you decide on a time or meeting place. It shouldn't be that large a site so we should bump in to one another---but how will we know it's us!?

Talk to you soon,

mary

I have a picture on my email of Clarese, and I'll be scanning in one of myself and emailing it to both of you sometime this week, I'll send the pic of her too. That way you'll know its us!!!

Clarese is out of town right now, meeting other dachsie lovers and their furbabies, but I'm sure we'll make some arrangements before saturday.
