View Full Version : What do I do for her ears?
Millie is a longhaired dachshund and I brush her daily yet she still gets these wicked tangles in her ears and her ear fur looks greasy after a few days. Is there anything I can do to stop that?

Most pet supply stores sell a detangler. Here is one from Petedge. EQyss Avocado Mist Conditioner & Detangler (http://www.petedge.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=3582&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=0&iSubCat=0&iSubSubCat=0&iProductID=3582&AS=1)

Is the rest of her coat oily? If not, the oil is most likely coming from INSIDE her ears and the matting is due to her scratching....she may be doing it when you aren't looking but frequently oily ears equate to itchy ears.
You need to keep the inside canals clean - you might get a cleansing agent from your vet. I use alcohol and a cotton ball BUT if there is something going on down there, the cleaning agent would be better because you can flush the ears with it.
As to the long hair, if you don't want to bathe them constantly, try getting some waterless shampoo that all you will need to do is towel them off and avoid the water. I use Bio-Groom's brand at work :)
Good luck!

I also find that if Tammy is scratching at her ears she's likely to get those knots. I make sure her ears are clean and that takes care of the problem. Even a wax build up makes her scratch.
I love it when she's just washed and everything cleaned her coat is sooo silky. So my question to everyone is, how often is too often to bath a LH? I've been doing it about once a month and I try to push it to 6 weeks. Is that too much?

My 2 long hairs always produce a lot of wax in their ears for some reason. I clean them out weekly with a good liquid ear cleaner. They also get greasy fur around their ears. The weekly cleaning makes a difference. I also comb their hair around their ears nightly.
PS. I did take them to the vet as I thought something was wrong with them! The vet said it was just wax.

Jeez...I hope it's not too much! I bathe LH Beau every other week!!
I asked on here a while ago about the greasy fur--and I got the advice to get a shampoo with oatmeal in it--I got tropiclean & I love it.
I try to brush him everyday and brush those ears too...
we also switched our kibble to Wellness which has oil in it for the coat & doesn't have any common allergins.
I'm not sure weather it was the shampoo, brushing more, or food change--but Beaus long hair is looking less & less greasy. I think a detangler for the ears is a good idea.
Good luck! :D

Thanks! Didn't mean to hijack this thread! Tammy's fur is not greasy ever, I just like the silky feel and the fabulous smell after she's had a shampoo :D She's been on Wellness ever since I got her.
I'll have to check out that liquid ear cleaner and maybe that'll make a difference. I just feel bad because I have to cut huge knots out of her ears because there's no way in heck to brush 'em out. I hope that works! Also, I'm going to look into places where I can find Wellness and maybe that'll work out for her too.

I also would trim the long hair under her ear (around the opening where it would be covered by the actual ear when it hangs down). This aids in keeping air flow to the ear and will prevent infection.
Good luck!
