Collie and Josie are going to the boarding kennel the first time in a few months and I am having serious guilt issues. Just wondering how other dachsies reacted?

We boarded Oscar at the vets office only once for 4 days, When we picked him up he was totally freaked out. He had rubbed his little nose on the kennel so much that he had a sore. They vet cleaned and put stuff on it, they took really good care of him, he just HATED it there. Of course we bought him from a pet store 7 months earlier and never crated him. He probably thought we were never coming back.

I have never really borded my girls. Rieke had to stay in the hospital for two days last week.
She was very afraid at first, but she is the kind of dog that will just 'give up' when put into a situation like that. When they brought her back out to me i couldn't believe how pitiful she looked. Her whole face was fallen in and depressed. The second she recongnized me she started squeaking and peed all over the floor. She continued whining in the car until she fell asleep. She was clearly exhausted.
Everyone said she seemed like 'such a sweet dog', but I know she just played dead. I will not do that to her again if I can help it.
Your guys are much younger. If you can, board them together. They are stronger in a team. If you like homeopathic remedies, I can recommend one for homesickness. My two are not that well socialized (I got them already grown up), and are clearly mom's babies. My fault.
Good luck!!

my babies do pretty good but majority of the time they are all always together or with my moms wired dachshunds......I think its always better to be in pairs that way they are with something that reminds them of home!

Quite honestly I hope it never comes to that for me. I am lucky that I can get someone to come and watch them at home. We just can't do it especially with Tammy..she spent her life in one of those and we're afraid she'll regress if we kennel her.
And Oliver..holy, I can't imagine what kind of nut case I'd come home to..
Some people have very good luck with kenneling though. I would make sure they had their blankies with that home smell on it.

Our Buddy just LOVES our vet. In fact we recently were away and he stayed there from Friday to Friday. The day I brought him down, he cried in the truck on the way, but stopped and got all excited when we stopped and he saw where we were. He drags me into the vet every time, has to make the rounds saying hi to everyone. He's very friendly and outgoing, they love him and pay lots of attention to him. He has no qualms about going with them, in fact he drags them to the back every time we bring him in, even if it's for anals or nail trims. He just loves them and they love him. I have another option where he could be more pampered, have play dates, etc. but he is happy with the people there and I trust them. He's comfortable in a kennel as we crate trained him and they make sure he has blankets to curl up in.
I did board him one other place a few years ago. We were going to Disney on a tight budget, we saved money by taking him with us on the trip down and back and boarding him there. Now I couldn't see the place, found it online mentioned in a newspaper article. It was Miss Emily's Bed and Bisquit. He had playdates with a bunch of different groups, he made friends with a collie, they put up with me checking on him and I was happy to see both when we walked in to drop him off and again when we picked him up that there was more than one person there and one person was sitting on the floor with the dogs during their playtime, not like they just let them go without attention. And we showed up at undetermined times too. Buddy was happy, he was just fine, healthy and clean. But I did call around to just about every vet place in the area for recommendations. Used the yellow pages online before I contacted them, then asked for their references, but at that point I had already determined they were well thought of by animal folks around them.
Check references if you are concerned. I have been lucky, I've heard some horror stories of other people but my experiences were very positive. My vet reports everything to me as did Miss Emily's.

Olana loved it!! The vet and all the girls in the office just love her, too. She was thrilled to see me when I came to pick her up, though. The vet calls her "killer." :sofunny:
