I've been sooooo bad. I would put Mitzi's collar on but the poor baby would go nuts or after an hour or two I would give in and take it off. This had been going on for 3 weeks so this last Saturday I decided that no matter what it would stay on. <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm6.gif" border=0> So now 2 1/2 days later she is still bothered by it. So my question is how long until some of your fur babies got used to their pretty necklaces?

What kind of collar are you using? Some dogs are irritated by Nylon. My Sunni girl scatches and picks at every nylon collar i have ever tried on her. So i bought her a leather one and BAM no more problems http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Some dogs are more sensitive to changes in their lives than others. Be sure to have some fun stuff to do that she can't resist (wearing her collar), & a few treats are good, too. Soon she will probably not even pay attention to it. Just make sure that it doesn't have any defects on the inner side that may be bothering her. The collar should be snug but not too tight: you should be able to get 2 fingers under it easily.
Got ID, too? Never know what the little beasties will get up to.

My girls have never been bothered by their collars, but Penny's litter mate Sharmin still will not/can not wear a collar (and they were born in January '99). Sharmin's folks have tried nylon, leather, plastic and woven cotton styles, but now matter how carefully they adjust them, Sharmin goes crazy! They felt bad about her discomfort and decided to stop "torturing" her so now she wears a harness when they want to walk her on a leash. She isn't very happy with that either - lots of scratching, rolling, etc. but she seems more comfortable with it than she ever was with the collar. Surprisingly she will tolerate a little cloth bandana type thing that the groomer puts on her after her bath and nail clippings once a month, but it is quite loose and comes off as soon as she gets home.
The only reason my girls wear collars really, is for the id tags. I have teenagers in and out of the house all the time and I'm paranoid that one of the dogs will sneak out unnoticed when a visitor comes or goes!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/shock.gif

It is a nylon one. I checked it over really good and there aren't any defects on it. I am still being the old meanie cause I want her to have a collar. I'll give it a little more time and if it still is upsetting her then I'll try another kind. I love to take walks and I want her to go when she is old enough plus she will have an ID tag when I find the right size for her. ID tags are so important. When Emily got hit the ID tag saved her life. They would have put her down if it hadn't been on there with our name and phone number plus it had her vets name and number on it too. So an ID tag is a MUST!!

My two cents - if your weenies are wearing collars while you're away, be sure their tags can't get caught in anything (crate, child gate, etc).
When Rooby was still real little I was trying to convince her that wearing her collar all the time was a good thing. One day; fortunately I was home, she jumped at her gate and her tag hung in it and she was on her tippy toes kind of hanging there. No harm done because I was there, but I hate to think about if I hadn't been.
Another thing - if anyone has thought about purchasing the 'Hug-A-Dox' harness from Dachsie Delight I recommend it! Rooby has HATED every collar and harness I've bought her (many) - she scratches at the collars, and limps when you put a harness on her. She's much happier with her custom made Hug A Dox harness... and she looks real sporty in it too!!

Well I guess I'm not so mean after all. When I got home from work today Mitzi was still going at it with the collar so off it came. She went wild ran like ... well I can't think what she ran like but boy did she have a good time. I think I'll try a leather one next.

Shonda,
My girls, Dolly and Maddie only wear leather and they LOVE to have their necklaces put on in the morning. We take 'em off at night cuz they jingle and jangle and wake us up.
Maybe your little punkin is a leather girl, too!

Some of us prefer the rolled leather collars. While they may be stiff at first given a little time they become as soft as a slipper. Eventually they can ear out, generally near the hole you use to buckle them. Rolled leather are my boys everyday collars which contain their tags. For walks I use nylon greyhound collars or in Franks case a mini prong collar since he is a big puller. The problem with trying to use your regular collar for walks is that with dachshunds narrow heads you have to cinch them down too tight for every day weat. We leave the leather collars on and then just add the other for our walks.

My guys have flat leather collars and don't seem to mind them. When we walk though, I do have to put a harness on because Hans knows how to pull, and then back out of his collar. He does it and then just looks at me like HA-HA, you can't keep me on that leash! He never really runs, but we use the harness, just in case.
I guess Duck Butter was about 13 weeks old when we got her first collar. Most of you know she was a puppy mill girl we got at 12 weeks old. We put a light weight, small nylon collar on her and you'd have thought we tied an anchor to her neck. She scrunched up and stood right where she was when we put it on for an hour, but we decided to leave it on and act normally. After several days she was fine with it. The other 2 had no difficulty accepting a collar, immediately.

Oscar never had a problem wearing a collar from the time he was 8 weeks old. He will limp when I put a harness on him though.
Wow, that Hans is sneaky!

Yes, Hans is one sneaky little boy. When he first figured out how to do it, he was trying to chase something and would take off, but now, he does it and just looks at me-I think he does it just to get me going! <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm38.gif" border=0>
We tightened his collar because he will evendo it when we take him to pee, but eventhough you can easily put two fingers betweenthe collar and him, I think it is to tight. So, I constantly loosen it, and the hubby is tightening it.... So, anyway, we just have to be real careful when he is in his leather collar, or any flat collar for that matter!

Heather, sounds like you need to find an alternative.
A Harness, a martingale (greyhound, anti-slip) collar, or a pinch collar would keep him from doing that, and make sure he's safe.
Con and Fin's Mom had this happen with Con this week. Thankfully, she has worked with them so much that when she told him to sit and STAY -he did and was not harmed. Which is another reason we all need to continually practice commands like Come and stay with our dogs. It can save their lives.
