Mine stay inside but some have suggested them staying outside when its nice outside so they won't tear up the house. what do you think?

Maybe I'm just a paranoid hoomom, but I worry about dog thieves, people who come in our yard and leave gates open, potential for injury in the yard, etc. Besides, our weather gets so strange sometimes, they would have to be able to get back into the house if it started raining or whatever - you know, those dreaded poison drops! Besides, dacshunds are NOT outside dogs, and I wouldn't even consider leaving them outside for 5 minutes if I wasn't home to check on them. Mine don't tear up the house, anyway (they're adults) so I feel perfectly secure when I leave them inside all day. And they have a doggie door for access to their backyard run, so all possibilities have been considered. That being said, they stay in the comfort of the house unless they have to potty - then they use the doggie door to their run, do their business, and go right back inside.

A dog that tears up the house has too much freedom and not enough discipline!!

Any time I leave the house my dogs are put in their crates. Even when I'm home and can't keep a strict eye on what they are doing - I use an X-pen in the same room I'm in so they can play or nap and I can watch them.

There is soooo much trouble a dog can get into being alone outside. Big birds of prey can carry them off - they can eat things that could cause them to be very sick - they can be stolen - they can dig out and get hit by a car or lost. Just too many things that could happen.

Maybe a dog run would be in order - but I still would not do it myself!

I would be worried sick the whole time I was gone, so my answer is no. I would worry that they would somehow find a way of getting out of the yard and/or that someone would open the gate (kids) or that someone would steal them.

Mine don't get free range of the house when I'm gone and I know that they are safe in the kitchen.

I don't think that's something I would ever even consider. I would be afraid
he'd get a hold of something that would harm him; and besides, it's just not
a good idea.

Call me overprotective, we have a doggie door however I hardly ever let them outside to go potty alone, let alone for a few hours. Even though we have a doggie door (its the storm door part) our main door is closed they can't get out. We have a fenced in yard and I blocked off the gaps at the bottom with retaining wall, however behind us there are no homes just a 2 lane road with a 30mph speed limit that goes to the highway, so I now worry that someone can lose control and end up in our yard. Just last week I saw a bobcat in the area so no they would never ever be outside alone.

I don't let them outside alone when I am home...they are kept on leashes....even tho they are 25 ft retractable ones, even tho we have a fenced yard. Doxies are waaaayyyy too fast, can go where no dog has gone before, and in a split second...can be in the middle of the street.

And they can be swooped up by eagles and some vultures, tho vultures would be rare...and I have a lot of free running dogs in the area that could probably jump my gates. I don't trust my idiot neighbor across the street not to just open the gate, either....since I have come home occassionally and found the gates standing open....notwithstanding the NO TRESPASSING signs affixed to them.

You think maybe one of those "Don't worry about the dogs, it's the owner you need to be afraid of" signs might help?

So no....never outside alone....much less when I am not at home.

I voted no. We live in an area with lots of wildlife; deer, coyote, fox, skunks, raccoon, you name it.

When I am home in better weather, I do allow Buddy out on our deck. It's totally enclosed and up off the ground. We have had animals go up the steps to check him off, but he makes such a racket any time there is an animal around, I always know what it is long before they get near him.

When we are out in the yard, we have an underground fence that we installed and he has full range of our property.

I vote no! I would be very afraid for my dog if she was left outside.

Absolutely not! Too many things can happen. I don't even let them outside alone when I am home! We have several very large hawks nesting in the surrounding trees and they are often circling just overhead. Kipper is smaller than some of the squirrels I have seen in their talons. I would rather fix or replace whatever they may damage inside than risk their safety.

Yes, if you have a small dog, eagles and vultures can definitely carry them off! And coyotes, too.

If I leave she's inside. I know this might sound bad, but I don't trust people, I'm afraid someone will take her, and then I would REALLY have to hurt that certain someone!!! And also vultures and other birds that could pick up my poor baby. I just don't think that it's safe enough for her, so she can stay outside ONLY when I'm home!!!

I think it all depends on where you live and what your dogs are like.

My dachshunds - no.
Too many big dogs roam free in our area and I worry that they could get over our 4 ft fence. Also, my girls are diggers. If they had the whole day to themselves out there........ They go in and out themselves when I'm home, but we check on them frequently to make sure they're not digging or getting into other trouble. Plus our weather doesn't really lend itself to that. Most of the year it's either too cold or too hot! :D

When we lived in Louisiana we often let our pug stay out in the yard when we ran short errands. I had a sturdy stockade fence, he was very calm and low key - no digging or tearing around or barking at every little noise for him! :) He could get back inside if he wanted to (doggie door) so I was comfortable with that.

I think the key would be: not enough exercise!

I have always left my bigger dogs in a large fenced in area of my backyard, and have never had a problem. Now Izzy has her own large fenced, floored, and roofed in area of the back yard to stay in. We are the only people that live on our road, other than Jamie's mom, so we aren't really worried about thieves. I didn't have a lot of luck with crate training, and Izzy could escape any kind of pen that we left her in indoors, and was rapidly destroying our house when left loose and alone, so we built the pen and modeled it after the kind of pens that we use for our pitties. So far everyone hasn't had any problems with being in the pens.

sam has a 30 ft leash on both the ft and back of our house. i dont think i leave him outside hooked up and leave. he might get wrapped up around a certain post we have in back...or he might work himself loose from collar...and in the front.. a car might pull in and hit him.......i worry about all these things even when im home and hes outside! im always checking!

I'd never leave any dog outside no matter what breed, unattended. You never know what could happen. Each of my dogs are crated in the house until they're old enough and I know that I can trust them to be left in one section of the house.

My dogs never go out unsupervised...........when its nicer out I love being outdoors myself so they get plenty of time to run...we have a fenced in yard but you never know who will steel a dog ....I worry about chloe the most because evryone that sees her say ohhh I never seen one that looks like her before.....so I keep an extra close eye on her!

NO WAY! I am over protective by nature anyways but I would not leave any breed outside but especially not a doxie. I think they were meant to be spoiled and steal all your blankets and warm your lap! I would be afraid they would dig out or anything, I would be sick everyday while I was gone wondering if they were ok and would be there when I got home. Now I just get greeted when I get home with puppy kisses and tail wags!:hug2:

I wouldn't allow mine outside while I wasn't around either. Just too much to worry about, stealers, wild animals, getting loose, or injured.

No NOT EVER!! not with any of my dogs. I have an inground pool and dogs tend to get disoriented when they fall or jump into a pool. They can't seem to find the steps.

My daughters boxer fell in a couple of weeks ago.....thank goodness i was with her..poor baby panicked and kept swimming towards the deep end.

I am too concerned with someone taking my dogs, Also you never know what they may get into.

I think they are safer inside crated!

It is unlikely that a vulture will take a pet, but.....when food is hard to come by, black vultures have been know to go after small livestock....(you never hear of turkey vulture doing that)...very rare occassions.

On the other hand....eagles and some large hawks really don't care that this is your precious little darling....to them it represents lunch. My cousin lives in Washington, and they have a real problem in his area with small dogs and cats literally being scooped up by the local eagles. Of course, the eagles are protected.....so you would have to be nuts to leave your pets out unattended there.

In Florida, there is also the added problem of gators. People mistakenly think that if they don't live right on the water, there are no gators hanging out. In mating season, you never know where they are going to turn up. We do take Taffy....and now we have two....with us over to Sanibel Island, and some jerk was making remarks about her being gator bait. I told him I would personally wrestle it before I would let it have her....but I definitely kept her on leash, and away from the water. A gator can do 30 mph, no sweat.

Too many risk, from land, water and sky for me to turn my babies loose on their own.

My cousins' 2 doxies were stolen from their backyard...I wouldn't recommend leaving your doxie outside while you're not home.

Nope, not leaving them outside with out a way in anyway. We have a fenced (wood privacy) yard here and the kids have a doggie door. They sleep most of the time we are gone but I like them to be able to get out when needed. Now, we have had vultures take smaller dogs in more country area here but in our house the only problem was when the kids brought birds IN the house! Now that was a sad mess, all four times!
Keeping in mind with all said, it all depends on our dogs really. Mine have never ever dug at the fence or shown signs of seperation anxiety so I do feel safe allowing them in and out while I am not here.
My biggest fear would be of Daisy stepping on a bee again! (allergic/ shock)

No, I would be a nervous wreck. Shelby can dig out in an instant, she's so small. I don't even allow them out alone when I'm at home. Maybe I'm overprotective, but I would never be able to forgive myself if something happened to them that I felt I could have prevented.

I don't have a yard, but if I did, I wouldn't leave them alone outside-I would be so afraid of them getting either stolen or poisoned.

Too many dangers. Every dog I can think about that has ever died by an accident has been outside when it happened. Enough dogs die of disease and natural 'old age' inside. No reason to invite problems...and a dog outside unsupervised is inviting problems!

Nope I'd worry about them to much. They stay in the house-nice and safe when we are not home.

I voted 'Other'. I do not leave mine outside now when I am not home. When I am they can usually go out through the doggie door on their own...but not at night or when I am not there. I do plan on getting a 'safe' outdoor run constructed one of these days so they can go out to relieve themselves during the day via a doggie door. The run will have a top and be constructed so they can neither dig out .. or something dig in.

Oh yeah! When I was living near Atlanta there was a story on the news about a chihuahua being picked up by a hawk.. the owners fought it off the the poor dog dropped several feet to the ground. They showed him on the news and he was all marked up and shaking like a leaf. :( That being said the Red Tail hawks around here have not shown any interest in my dogs or cat when I have had the opportunity to observe them.

Absolutely not! I would be a wreck worrying the whole time I was gone!

Not to mention, Bean would be very put out that we went outside together and then I went away in the car and left him there in the yard!!! If I go to the car and he can see me, well then it is his automatic assumption that he should get to go buhbye in the car also!!!! That just wouldnt work for him to be left behind!

Jenn

NO, NO, NO!! I could not leave him outside unattended!!! There has been a rash small dogs being stolen out of backyards around here to be used for dog fight bait!!! So no way will he ever be left alone in the backyard!!!!

my pup is my child... I'd rather him be safe in the house than outside with the risk of him getting loose somehow, someone snatching him up, or getting hurt somehow. our house is doggie proofed and "mistakes" can be cleaned up.
