With Oct. 31st just around the corner, I dug out my basket of Halloween books today. As always I grinned like a total fool as I read Dav Pilkey's book The Hallo-Wiener to my kindergartners!
In case you're not familiar with the story, it starts out, "There once was a dog named Oscar who was half-a-dog tall and one-and-a-half dogs long. Because of his unusual shape and size, all the other dogs made fun of him. "Wiener Dog! Wiener Dog!" they called him." I don't want to give away any secrets, but at the end of the story Oscar's friends change his nickname from "Wiener Dog" to "Hero Sandwich"!
It's a great story about friendship and doing what's right, and the humor in the text and illustrations is wonderful. Even if you aren't into childrens' books, I can guarentee you'll love this one! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif (It's available in paperback or hardcover and has been around since 1995 so ought to be in your local library!)

Mrs.F,

Halloweener is a standard among my books. Also "Circle Dogs" is a long bodied dog book.

Big grin,

I used to work in a library and one of my co-workers really enjoyed reading this book at storytime (she had a Black Lab at home). I read it, too, and thought it was hilarious.

We adopted a dachshund/lab mix earlier this year, who we called Aggie. She's about 10 months old.

Back to the book - my 2-year-old in enrolled in the Children's Book of the Month Club, and they offered it for sale (softcover edition) in late September or so.

It came in the mail a couple of weeks ago, and while my son doesn't have the attention span to sit through the entire story, he does like to look at the pictures ( he calls the drawings of Oscar "Aggie", even though Aggie is solid black with really short fur. Guess she does have the dachshund-type body, though).

This book will be good for my son for the next several years - it has several fine messages and is just plain funny!

"The Halloweener" is one of the big weapons in my "get-'em-while-they're-young" arsenal! I give it as a gift to friends' kids and to my cousin's--along with the wonderful stuffed Ollie Dachshund. My boss's daughter, Ursula, is nine and she now reads the copy of the book I gave her when she was five to her younger friends! My life's goal" Create as many dachsaholics as possible!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif
