Hi! I'm brand new to this board--it looks like a great resource!

My husband and I have decided that Dachshunds are the breed for us, after much research and talking to people who have had them. We're specifically interested in a short-haired mini (red, female preferred).

We live on Eastern Long Island. Do any of you know of a reputable breeder in this area? Alternatively, we would also love to adopt a youngish adult but haven't had success in finding one.

Thanks!! :-)
Jenn

Welcome! The board members (incuding yours truly) are a bit slow responding because of the holiday weekend and then there is the shopping, not to forget the decorating, oh, yes the cooking. Well, you get the idea.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif
How delightful you've decided to Go Dachsie. We have many very active rescue organization people here. Both DRNA (Dachshund Rescue of North America) and C2CDR (Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue) I am sure will let you know what might be available.
We love all our pets, but honestly there is an additional depth of feeling, when you open your heart and home to a rescue.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/heart.gif
Gotta run,

Thank you for your warm welcome! I know this is a very busy time of year so appreciate your time!
We would definitely be grateful for any recommendations of rescue opportunities. By the way, I should add that we wouldn't be able to adopt or buy until mid-January becuase we are going on a vacation after Christmas--we want to be able to devote all of our attention to our Dachsie!
Thanks again,Jenn

The Dachshund Club of Long Island is one of the oldest of the breed clubs. You should try and contact them for a breeder reference or rescue referral. I don't know if they have a web site but you can go to the Dachshund Club of America site and they should have the info. The DCA site is www.dca~dachshund.org. (http://www.dca~dachshund.org.)

Thanks for telling me about the DCA. For any others reading this, I think that their address is actually: http://www.dachshund-dca.org.

By the way, I've tried contacting the person listed for the DCA Long Island but was got through to someone unfriendly who told me simply to call back later because they didn't have any puppies right now (even though all I wanted was a name of a good breeder). I guess I'll try again later! Do you (or anyone else) have any idea why she wouldn't have just given me some names to contact myself? She didn't give me a chance to describe what a wonderful home we have to raise a Daschie pup! Anyway, thanks for the info--I think it will lead somewhere eventually--I just need to be perseverent.

Many reputable breeders will not sell puppies during the holidays for fear they will be given as gifts...most rescue org. will not adopt out at this time for the same reason. To many are returned in January to the pound. Just be persistent and you will find the right one.

Ah, now that makes sense. I bet that was what it was. Since we don't want to get a pup (or adult) until after the holidays, perhaps we will do better waiting until then to start the process. Thanks!--Jenn
