Well, this adoption story is just unfolding but I had to tell it as it has so touched my heart. Today I was contacted by a woman who said she wanted a Doxie puppy for her 10 yr old son. I get those calls all the time so I was prepared to screen her on the phone as usual and then if she sounded good I would refer her to a local breeder that I trusted. This is the usual drill. As I talked with this woman I discovered that she was the Mother of a 13 yr boy who had just last month died when canoing in a nearby lake. He and his best friend also 13 set out to fish as they always did but this time never returned home. The entire community as well as all local emergency crews out here banded together to seach. The search lasted an entire week and divers came with special sonar equipment etc. Sadly a week later they found the first boy who had washed up on shore. Two days later they found Travis my callers son. They had capsized and were 1000 feet off shore and died from exposure. As she was telling me I about broke down as the sadness in her voice took me over. I asked how I could help her and she said that two weeks after Travis died his dog Hershey died. His little Hershey a 6yr beloved family member just ended his will to live. They took him to the Vet and the Vet did all they could but Hershey did not survive. This was about all this family could take. 10 yr Dillon who is Travis' little brother is extremely traumatized by all this but in his little wisdom he said "Mommy, I think Hershey just missed Travis too much and wanted to be with him" OK, now I am trying to be professional but crying on the phone.. Marie Turner the boys Mother continued by saying that little Dillon has only made one request and that is to have a little red Doxie puppy of his very own to love so maybe missing Travis and Hershey would not hurt so bad. I of course wanted to hand them a Doxie puppy that moment but I don't have any?? I told her I would make some calls and do all I could. She even in her grief had been taking Dillon the our local shelters to see if any Doxie pups were there. Of course there were none. Dillon went home many times saddened once again. We talked about an older rescue Doxie but they have two cats and as Dillon is only 10 we felt he needed to start with a younger dog who could grow with Dillon. Well, I hung up with her and I knew I had to get a Doxie puppy for Dillon no matter what. She had called on me for help and I could not let her down. So I called a breeder I know in NC who has a small kennel and as it turns out she too had lost a child and understood this pain. I told her that little Dillons only wish was to have a red male Doxie puppy. I held my breath and asked her if she had one. She did :party6: and will be donating the custest little red male doxie puppy to little Dillon. When I got done thanking her and sobbing into my keyboard I called to tell the Turner family and I could hear Dillon just giddy with excitement in the background. The puppy will not be old enough to go to him for 4 weeks and to Dillon this is a lifetime! I am so hoping that this little precious puppy who I will call therapy on 4 legs will provide Dillon with even a small amount of comfort in this time of tragedy in his life. I want to make a public Thank you to an incredibly wonderful human being who's generosity will make such a difference. Her name is Krista and she is in NC and I hope you all will join me in thanking her for helping this family through the most difficult time of their lives. She can be reached at kristacogburn@charter.net :thanx:
The Travis Turner story can be read in the archives in the Richmond Times.

This story is a real tear jerker...I'm still crying as I type this. If it isn't bad enough to lose your child for them to also lose his dog under such sad circumstances is awful. I pray that this family finds peace.

What a great story! I think it is amazing how theraputic dogs can be, and I think especially dachsies! They just want you to hold them and pet them, there's no better feeling in the world! I'm so glad this little boy found a forever friend!

sad, yet happy - please keep us posted. The little kid needs a fur friend, and a fur friend needs a little kid. That's what dachsies are for - to hold, give comfort, and love. That's what they do best! Thanks for helping out a child in need.

Phew! That blew me away. Trying to type through tears. What a sad thing to happen to that family and a little brother. So much all at once. What a marvelous thing you did for them to press on and make that little boys wish came true. Even though he has to wait 4 weeks, that anticipation will help him deal with the sadness of his loss--I'll bet hia Mom's sees that as an added blessing.

Bless you and Krista for you wonderful kindness and unselfish gift. That will be a loved little puppy, to be sure. Thanks for sharing the story.

Oh children and puppers the two most precious things in the world. Your right that story was so heartbreaking, there can be nothing worse than the loss of a child. Thank you for caring enough to start the healing process for that family. I hope that Mom will post a picture of the puppy and her son when she gets it.

What a sad and heartwarming story! What proof of the bond between people and their beloved pets, too. Those two just couldn't be separated and now her son has his precious dog to keep him company until they're all together again. As for Dillon, hopefully this new puppy will be able to soothe some of his grief. That doxy breeder is an angel!!

This is what I like so much about this board. There are so many truly wonderful people out there like yourself. Unbelievably sad, but your warmth shines through.

Thank you to those who e-mailed Krista. She is a real doll and I wanted to make sure she knows she is appreciated. She has very little money and I know she really needed the fee for her puppy and this is what impressed me the most. I just really wanted to share this story as not often enough to we hear of true human kindness in the world. So many out there just looking to make a buck or to see what they can take from others and to hear of this kindness and compassion helps to restore my faith in humanity. Krista I am honored to know you. I will be driving out to the NC border to pic up the puppy and will take pics as he is presented to Dillon. I will share them here with you all so you can join us in this most joyous moment. This community will really miss Travis Turner who's young life was cut short but as Mrs. Turner has said she is blessed at how the whole community has banned together to come to the aid of one of it's own. She knows Travis and Hershey are together in Heaven and smiles at the memories she will always carry. :hug2:
