I am about to adopt a little Wisconsin lass name of Dutchess. She's an 8 year old, black & tan smooth mini and the adoption process is just about complete. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif BUT, I'm looking for someone in the Chicago area who is planning a trip east [NYC area, Philadelphia, Washington DC] and who would be willing to transport Dutchess for me (I'll pay the plane fare for her gladly if that the way your coming.)

Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue will not ship a dog via cargo and that's a good thing. Frankly, I would love to have Dutchess join Pluto and me in NY, but buying a r/t plane ticket for me is an expense I wasn't counting on. Any suggestions?

I know you are rather savy so you may have already covered these options. Did you check with the dachshund undergroung railway or DRNA rep in the Chicago area to see if they cna help out? Since it appears you will be getting her from C2CDR you are already in contact with them. A few more ideas, do you know anyone who works for Federal Express, an Airline or UPS. I'm not sure about UPS but Federal Express employees can ride in a jump seat on their cargo planes. Thank you for adopting an older dog they cna be so hard to find homes for.

Hi Lanie ... i wish there was some way for me to help ... but im not anywhere near those area's i DO know 1 thing though ... i had Gwen shipped via Contiental Airlines PDQ and she was NOT shipped Cargo like Delta does... she was kept in a heated pressurized area of the plane ... if you cant find a rider or a flyer maybe you can call Contiental Airlines and have them tell you more about PDQ for live animals. I wouldnt ship Gwen Delta i insisted on PDQ it was wonderful we had absolutly NO problems and it was actually cleaper than Delta $123 from Tx. to Nc. Congrats on your new addition and Good luck!!

Here is the web link for the Dachshund Underground Railroad: http://www.doxie.org/index.shtml (http://www.doxie.org/links.shtml)

One more idea do you know any over the road truckers?

Lanie, I will gladly drive that precious girl on one leg toward you! But if car transport doesn't work out, there's something called the Dachshund Air Force, which is a group of people who work for airlines and who arrange air transport for rescues. I'm hoping someone on the board knows how to get in touch with them--I've just heard of them. Anyone know?

Thank goodness someone remembered the name Dachshund Air Force. I had read of it before but couldn't remember the name or where I had seen the information. Given a name to search for here is a web link: http://www.drwp.net/options.html

Good luck,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

I just contacted both people listed who transport dachshunds via air and have passed the info on to Michele, my C2CDR contact. It sounds very promising.

Wienergal, your offer is greatly appreciated. Michele can't seem to find someone for the second leg of the trip. I would take the last leg myself. I hope one of the airline contacts work out.

Thanks for all your good advice. I'll keep you posted.

Lanie, this is wonderful news - I'm ecstatic for you.
I could drive part of the trip also - located in Central NJ as I am - hey could we enlist Karen's husband Chris from Penn? I'm not volunteering them and I don't know the route, just pondering "out loud". Congratulations, Georgette

I'm so glad Lanie. I posted on Bens update but thought you might not see it there. Senior dogs are so wonderful and loving. They are some of the best puppers but people don't know it because they want that cute puppy face. I love puppy faces too, but wouldn't trade my seniors for anything in the world. Thank you for giving that dog a loving home!

Josie and Ben (my senior dachshies) bow their heads in respect to you!

Lanie, Congratulations on the new addition to your family and bless you for adopting a "mature" dachsie. I know she will bring you many years of love and happiness.

I think we have a real possibility w/ a Continental Airlines rep or with Michele's vet who is driving east before Christmas. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and feel very hopeful.

Lanie,

Freddie & I are keepin our paws crossed for you!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif I hope Dutchess makes her way to you. That is the frustrating part of Rescue - transport!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif I'm sure they'll work this out somehow though. I'm thinking of ya and Pluto.

Truckers go that way all the time. Try Rolling Rescue at http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Park/6538/

They also have a discussion board at rollingrescuetalking@onelist.com

I know of a woman who had her rescue dobie transport clear across country by them, no problems.

Also, most of the airlines will only ship animals if the weather is decent. Too hot or too cold, & they stop shipping. This includes the ones with heated, pressureized holds, because of the possibility of system breakdowns.

Penny's Aunt, on the airline transport, an airline employee actually takes the dog on board with them. They do this in their spare time and fly for free because they work for the company. I wouldn't want any dog to have to fly cargo. If this doesn't work, I'll try Rolling Rescue. Thanks for the tip. Lanie

I would think that a dachsie would be easy for airline transport at ANY time of the year, because they're small enough to fit under the seat. So that's a plus for the weiners!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Lanie,

Email them to me at kds@gbacpas.com and I'll post them....I'm time constrained today, so that will be easier than explaining how to post them.

Congrats!!

http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif Well, Duchess is coming hopefully by the 15th of December and thanks to the Dachshund Air Lines and Pamela, of course. This rescuing is an amazing process. I work for a child care agency and we use the same methods here - application, home visits and contracts. Always better to be safe when placing these pups.

I'm going to try to post a picture of my little girl with the soulful eyes. I can see why Pamela was so taken with her. I'm sure I'll be looking for "bringing in a new sibling advice" from you experts. I'm pretty excited. (Pluto said, "How could she want to leave a state known for its cheese. I wish she'd stay where she belongs." http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

Lanie, that is wonderful, and it will be nice for Pluto having a sibling.
I have to admit, I'm a little jealous cause I'd like Freddie to have a sister. Hopefully one of these days after I'm settled in my new place. Most folks here have at least 2 dachsies, I can't stand it! I'm happy for you and Pluto though.

Well, it will actually be an extra-special HANUKKAH celebration at Lanie's house, but I'll bet Duchess would LUVVVV some potato pancakes!!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

I AM SO HAPPY!!!!! Who's flying her in, Lanie? You'll just go to JFK and pick her up at the gate? I can't wait to hear how it goes! I hope you're as taken with her as we were... I can still see her, with her pathetically long, curled claws, sprawled out, snoring, on my friend's lap as we drove her home....

Oh, I just saw the photos! Lanie, she is MUCH, MUCH cuter than those pictures show! She just has the sweetest, sweetest little face... Well, you'll see soon! This girl is Queen of the Punkins!!!

A rep from the Dachshund Air Force will be flying her in. She works for Continental Airlines and I'm not sure where I'll meet her - those final details have not been worked out yet. Potato pancakes it is for both Dutchess and Mr. Pluto. (Pluto first, of course.)

I will change her name. Dogs adapt very fast to new names. I have 2 names in mind Schatzie (for sweetheart in German) and Shana (for pretty in Yiddish). I have to see her first before I name her. In my neighborhood, Shana probably the best bet http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif.

Lanie, I LOVE those names! But what's the Yiddish word for so-utterly-cute-you-could-plotz??? http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif I'm glad you're changing her name. After what she's been through, I think of "Duchess" as her slave name....

So glad that Pluto now has a playmate!

I have never heard of the Doxie Air Force! This is great! I ran through this thread and I was about to PM you if you needed a link between central PA and western NJ, then I seen the DAF is there!

Can't wait until spring, I think we are going to go for number two then.

Lanie,

What a little love bug Miss Dutchess is! Pluto will fall head over paws for her in no time. You are so sweet to adopt an older pupper. I want to do the same when I can. My first dachsie rescue was a 10 yr. old boy and he's the one who paved the way for the rescue I do. It's because of him and his memory that I adore this breed . . . I wanna 'nother weiner baby!!!!!!
