Ear cleaning...How often?

I was wondering how often should I clean Bobbie's ears? We used to bathe her monthly & we'd do the earcleaning then also...Now, we bathe her every 3-4 months & I was wondering if we should do earcleaning monthly or is it overkill?

How often does everyone else do this grooming duty?

I admit I never clean their ears. They are clean, the vet never has any complaints...

I do smell them and check them, but so far I haven't had to do anything to clean them.

I've never had to clean the ears of my little men. I check them everyday when I brush and massage them...and they are always clean.

My vet said to clean them once a week, I got some stuff from him, I usualy bath them once a month and do nails.

I take a Q-tip and clean outside of the ear canal (never inside).... usually about once a month. I play with their ears a lot though so they're used to having them touched.... same with paws and teeth.

My vet suggests using Ear Cleansing Solution by Vet Solutions. She said to use after bathing in case water gets in their ears it can cause infection plus it also cleans their ears. So I bathe Mazzy about every 2-4 weeks & always use the solution. It is also suggested to use after they swim (which my girl would not dare).:D

:) I clean Willy's ears once a week as prescribed by his Vet. She prescribed Epi-otic Ear Cleaner solution. But you can find it much cheaper online. Do a search for it--it is made in Ft Worth by Virbac Animal Health.

...as a rule, I only clean them when they have a bath...and even then, only if necessary...

....but I do check regularily...Brigs, the allergic retriever, needs his cleaned out more often...they get really gross and full of this dark brown gunky stuff...*blech*

Yep, we do it once a week or once every two weeks at bathtime. I never knew if that was right or not, but I figured better safe.

That's my procedure, too - I do check their ears regularly for mites, etc.

I do it about once a month when I bathe him....I do use baby wipes in between baths though, and sometimes I just quickly clean them with those.

When I do clean them, I use the ear cleaner solution (over the counter), then wipe them out with cotton balls. My vet told me you cannot do damage with a cotton ball, no matter how far you go. Then I use a prescription drop solution that prevents the wetness of the bath from giving him an infection.

I just take a kleenex and wipe out the insides of Charlie's ears about once a week or so. He loves it, he just sits on my lap with that looke of ma that feels so good!

once a week here also. also after i give him a bath i need to clean his ears because the first time i ever gave him a bath he got a yeast infection in his ears , because i guess water got in there. so now i have to clean them after the bath.. once a week is good if you wait longer i think in most dogs it becomes dirty .

I purchase the solution on vet america... which is cheaper than at my vet's.

Vet told me to do them once a week, but Ponch has some of the cleanest ears(according to her) that I really don't bother

Yup I always seem to luck out with having an ear sucker. Which means they get to wet and if it doesn't dry out. You have a dog with an ear infection. Even Zor with being short haired gets them. Con has always done this and it is a pain in the butt. Plus it is disgusting when Zor will jump up on me and his ears are all slimmy.
I use an solution from the vet for wet ears. It keeps the bacteria from going wild. I check ears most of the time 2 -4 weeks. Depending on if I see the wet ear monster lurking around....:pullhair:
