I want to thank evryone here for all of your support - especially Shelley! We spent a lot of hours (months) deciding if we were ready to join DRNA. And yes, Shelley, we did say we were going to start out slow, but I wouldn't have missed getting to know Dash for anything.

He goes to the vet today to get him caught up on all of his medical needs. He hasn't been taken care of very well. In addition to his medical updates that he needs, he has really bad cataracts and is very hard-of-hearing. He is such a special little guy and is so very sweet. Having Dash is almost like having a new puppy (even though he is 11). Over the weekend he learned so many things and had so many firsts!

Dash had never been on a bed before. He didn't know what to do at first. For the first couple of nights, he would lay all night in exactly the same position we set him in when we went to bed. Last night he got under the covers! He had never been on furniture and was in awe as our guys sat on the sofa to take naps....now he loves sitting with us. The great big pillow in the living room (the flop-upon) and teh other doggie beds were new to him....he acts like a king laying on the flop-upon. He has learned where all the food is.

Dash is learning a great deal too...he is learning that he DESERVES love, food, attention, snuggles, and all the other things our two guys take for granted.

It breaks my heart to think of how he used to live, but it is so rewarding to grow and discover new things! I just hope he finds a new home soon, as we are already very attached to him and I know his leaving our home will be very hard.

To everyone who is considering taking the rescue plunge.....it is one of the most rewarding things we have done! And to those of you considering adopting another dachshund...please consider adopting a senior. Whoever said you can't teach an old dog a new trick never knew an old dog. Dash has so much love to give and expects nothing in return....but is so happy when he gets attention and love in return....

Mandy, what a wonderful story! I'm so glad that Dash is adapting to his new home. You rescue folks are like angels here on earth!

I enjoyed "helping" you out but I think you are doing great on your own. I hope you pass on more stories of a positive foster experience with a senior. So many folks are scared to adopt or foster the oldies and they are so worth the effort. I wouldn't trde Granny for anything.
