My husband took Duke (not a doxie) to have his nails cut and they used a dremel instead because they were afraid of hurting Dukes tiny feet.
Well I just loved the results!
His nails were nice and short and not sharp! So I've looked on line and found how to do it and to ease your dog into it.
I was wanting to know if any of you have used a dremel and your exerience.
Thanks a ton!

Yes, I use a cordless dremel on both my dogs nails. No need for that stressful guillotine-type trimmer and extra filing step!

I am interested in it but have never tried it myself. Where did you find the instructions online? I think I had read here that Walmart has a nicely priced Dremel, but I could be wrong. I started checking into it about a year ago and then got way-laid with something else and forgot about it.

I didn't save the link but went to google and typed in "Dremel Dog" and it was about two or three articles down that tells how to do it.
I worked for a vet a few years back and she would dremel and never needed help! Wish I could have seen closer what she was doing!!

Zoey will let me trim her nails with a regular pair of nail clippers - she doesn't like it, but she'll let me do it as a one person job.
I thought I'd try a dremmel...no go. If I even turn the thing on and she's in the room - she's outta there. I can't even get her within 3 feet of the dremmel if it's turned on.
I've tried putting treats on top of the thing when it's off. I've tried turning it on and leaving it run hoping it become senough background noise that she'd come in and get close - nope. I haven't tried other things...but my pup isn't making dremmeling easy:)

Well that's discouraging!! Nugget and Daisy are real good as well about having the clippers but we can never seem to get them short enough and then their quicks get longer............... never ending battle!
I'll be really slow and careful to introduce it if we get one! Thanks for the heads up!!

I would love to dremmel Rupert's nails if he would allow it, but he totally flips out even at my electric razor when I shave MY legs so there's no way that he would allow a dremmel to even get close to him LOL...

If you find the recipe for success let me know - I'd like to dremmel to get them shorter and work the quick back, but so far she's winning, and I hate to take a dog that will tolerate nail trims and make her freak whenever her toes are handled.

I'd like to try it too but I think Badger would freak ... Merry and Bart might be ok with it. A groomer friend of mine told me that if I try it to do it in small bursts since if you leave the grinder on their nails too long it'll get hot. Also be careful of catching any hair in there. Probably don't have to worry about with smooths... but I would with my wires as would anyone with a long hair.

I can't thanks enough that thing to came in our life... it's not easy but at least, Lucie will not freaking out as she did with the clipper.
We should do it at least, once a week to have it done quick and be 2 big humans to keep the tiny dog still.

I use a dremmel....Jen is ok but I have to use a soft mussle or she trys to bite it LOL I'm working on Carlee.....and I only let the vet do Cami's because she acts like your cutting her leg off not her nails ...And I'm afraid to hurt her back....Dremmel is a much nicer finish...I love it.

Dremel is the way to go ! I've been dremmeling my dogs for years, and it's less stressful and the chances of them getting hurt are slim to none, because the process itself is very slow. (If done right. ;))
