Hi,
on my 9 month old black tan mini wirehair and his beard is getting brittle and breaking off - his beard has never been stripped. I only been using harsh coat shampoo by bio groom and wanted to know if there is any conditioner for harsh coats that I could use on his beard that would help it or any other items.
he is from a smooth/wire breeding and doesn't have alot of furnishing and his top coat seems to longer to grow out.
I hand strip his coat am working on rolling it but his coat doesn't take hardly any work.
I am showing up but will not be going to any shows till mid august.
I also have been giving him supplements for his coat - doc blends hair of the dog - (omega oil) for the last 3 months along with his daily vitiams.

thank you,
kris

The best person to answer this would probably be Cindi since she raises wires and is also a groomer. I have 3 wires but only hand strip one of them. I was going to recommend fish oil but it seems like you are already giving a supplement with Omegas in it. I do know some wire coats do break off... so that may be what you are experiencing... Hopefully some one could give you a better answer

The harsher the coat the easier it is to break :( It is a fine line that we walk with the breeding of harsh coated wires (which most likely, I hope, was one of the reasons behind breeding the smooth and wire together) wanting the proper texture but usually losing furnishings when we do it. In order to try and *soften* the beard so it won't break you can use a heavy conditioner like Kolesterol (sp?) I know the *K* is correct <G>. Use just a little and rub it in to the beard and possibly the legs if you have the same problem there. Every few days you may have to wash it out and reapply as it might attract dirt :) Just keep him in it at all times and also try to make sure he isn't rubbing his face and purposely breaking his beard ie rubbing in his crate or on bedding, etc.

Hope this helps.

HI, Thank you. :thanx: I will give that a try. I was trying to find it starting with a c but I will look for it with a k.
His coat is pretty harsh and I think he was losing it when he was chewing on his chewies, toys while teething. thank you again, kris

i hope i did this right. Everytime I made the pictures smaller they would show up in the pre-view so I hope they did this time. brandy is the standard puppy on the right she is 4 months old, and banjo is the mini who is 9 1/2 months. banjo is the one that his beard getts real brittle and breaks but it is slowly growing out again. he doesn't have any shows for about 10 weeks so hopefully by then it will gorw out some.[ i hope this photo is small enough the other one i had ended up so small after re-szining it on photobucket it looks like a stamp. krist[]http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j212/banjobrandy/6e067e75.jpg

I know exactly were Toquerville it...my parents almost bought a home there....I think my Mom would still like to live there. You are right about not having clubs, shows or training clubs near to us. Las Vegas or SLC would be about it....it's a shame because I'm sure St George us big enough to accommodate it. We have a fly ball club here but that's all I have found. I have never seen a dachsie there either. I don't know what they would think if I showed up with her either. :dizzy:

It's good to know I have someone who lives near to me on the board. I know Irma lives in Arizona, a few that don't post often in Las Vegas, and some in California too...but most seem to be closer to the East coast.

Please let me know if there are any meet up groups or activities that come up if you don't mind. I would love to meet or join a group that has the same love of Dachsies as I do!

Thank you for all the nice comments about my two puppies . my computer has been down so I am late replying.
banjo beard is slowly growing back and the conditioner is helping it.
the standard girl is maturing very fast and should be about 24 to 26 lbs according to her breeder but i am thinking she might be a bit bigger than that.
they make quite the odd couple and are very funny to watch the two of them playing together. banjo is staying at 10 pounds and brandy is at 17 lbs now and growing so there is a good size difference but they love to play together and are very funny to watch the brandy try to caught banjo who loves to run.
i think i answer everything.
PS if i find any dog stuff in southern utah I will post if, you think we would atleast have a dog park!
