View Full Version : Neat trick for nail trimming!
Schatz's Mom

My guys hate to have their nails trimmed and last weekend when my daughter was here she showed me a trick that seemed to really work. Well at least it worked with Bones, I haven't tried it with Schatz and Kipper yet!
She put a tablespoon of peanut butter down for Bones and while he was attending to the sticky glob she was able to clip clip clip! He didn't even try to get away! I will be a true believer if it works with my other two! We did this outside but if doing it inside I would suggest the kitchen!

Now that sounds like a good idea!

Such a simple solution but it sounds perfect. I'm going to give it a try on my two guys who fight the entire time through a nail clipping. Thanks!

Worth a try. Let us know how this works for anyone that tries it. :)

My simple solution was to give up and let the vet's techs do it. Tho when we were there yesterday, I suggested that they cut Daisy's first, and make sure that Taffy (I got to have it if Daisy does) see them do it.
They did, she did, and Miss Tasmanian devil demon let them cut her nails without ripping any flesh from their bodies (unlike last time). I have to tell you, that is the best $16 I spent this month:party6: :party6: :party6: .
I took Cheddar Cheese cookies with me to make sure they felt rewarded for good behavior. My dh said he never saw them take them, lol. They got them, slurp.....

That is a great idea. I was using peanut butter morsels between nails as a treat, but don't always have them around. I will have to try it as Dexter loves Peanut Butter.

I have tried that it also workswith giving meds. and it is a godsent as we all know these lil buggers will not swallow a pill. And if they lick past the pill on the spoon make a half peanut butter sammich and I guarantee a landing in the belly. But yes it does workand its the way the groomer told me.

im dreading that its time for sams nails to get trimmed again! last time he cryed...and kept pulling his foot away! we thought(lady groomer) that maybe something was wrong with his feet..but we couldnt find anything! i really think hes ticklish cause he will pull away from me if i touch them when hes sleeping too! im scared he will nip at her...shes not ever hurt him or cut to close but hes still is a baby ! sometimes there will be other dogs running around and they sorta keep him occupied watching them...but last time there wasnt any others.. .so she got the full crybaby bit! maybe ill take a treat with me...thanks for the suggestion!

Mine have gotten much better at nail trimming but Tammy does pull away a LOT. I'm going to try the peanut butter trick next time. Thanks for the suggestion!

It take two of us to do Chief's nails! One of us holds him and has treats ready, while the other one has the clippers. We time it, and whoever has the clipper says when..and at that moment Chief gets a treat. Too focused on these treats to do anything else!

I'm a firm believer in the Dremel-method :D - at this point I'm getting Maisie used to the noise. (More or less successful........ )
I found that Maisie will KILL for Madeleines. God knows why.

One of the things I thought was interesting when they clipped Daisy's nails is that they stood her on the table facing away from them, and clipped her from behind, back feet first. She gave them no problem at all. The tech told me the big secret is having them up on the table.
Which kind of does make me wonder. My dil worked for a groomer, and she told me they clipped them on a table with a tiny wobble. It made the dogs stand still. Hey, go figure.
This mom is gonna let the vet's tech clip them from now on....and then I won't have to wobble, lol.

That sounds like a great idea. I had one that was a
biter at trimming time. We used to stuff his mouth
with a hard biscuit then clip fast. He looked like a
muppet chewing crackers. Pieces flying everywhere
because he was so mad. This work for a couple of
years, had to move on to a muzzle. Took 3 of us to
do him.

That is a very hilarious picture in my mind. I see a version of Animal there trying to eat some crackers and being mad at the same time. Charlie and I have an understanding, a treat for some feet. I got some of the Charlie Bear treats since they are low calorie and I lock and load!! I can clip one nail but have to give a treat or I get the look of "H#!! No You ain't cheatin' me" and takes off. Now this was a pupper who would scream bloody murder over his feet, but not anymore since we have the agreement!! The p-nut butter idea sounds great, would love to hear a first count try with that.

Great idea!! I haven't tried it with nail cutting yet but it worked great for giving Daisy her Adequan shot last night. I don't think she even realized she got stuck.
Thanks,

I've often said that at the birth of their child, parents should be issued "home use strength" chloroform for those moments that really called for all out mom vs kid challenges. Maybe the same should go for pets??
Isn't amazing how such sweet (children and) puppers can turn into such :eekdevil: who would rip us apart over a small thing like that?
